  • The atmospheric and oceanic influences on the air-sea thermal interaction in the East Sea (Japan Sea) are studied by means of an analytic model which is based on the heat budget of the ocean. By means of the model, the model, the annual variations of heat fluxes and air temperatures in the East Sea are analytically simulated. The model shows that the back radiation, the latent heat and the sensible heat increase with the warn water advection. The latent heat increases with the sea surface temperature (SST) but the back radiation and the sensible heat dcrease as the SST increases. In the East Sea, an increase of mean SST by 1.0$^{\circ}C$ yields an increase of mean air temperature by 1.2$^{\circ}C$. The heat storage in the ocean plays an important role in the annual variations of heat flux across the sea surface.

  • The long-term mooring performed at a KOGA station, located at about $30^{\circ}20^{\prime}N$, $126^{\circ}12^{\prime}E$ in the East China Sea shelf, shows some different behaviors between "semi-diurnal" and "diurnal currents" defined as the currents with periods around, respectively, a half day and a day. They appear to be predominantly tidal having significant coherences with sea level changes around the semi-diurnal and diurnal frequencies. The "semi-diurnal current" is strongly barotropic all year round. However, contrastingly, it is largely baroclinic in summer in the area about 70 km nearer to the continental slope, referred to as the "slope-area", as was found in previous current observations. The "diurnal current" of tidal origin is strongly barotropic in winter. In spring and summer, however, it becomes more baroclinic although it still remains largely barotropic, also showing more of its barotropic nature than in the "slope-area". The inertial oscillation contributing to the "diurnal current" appears to be more prominent when the current is baroclinic, indicating the important role played by stratification in generation of inertial oscillations. Downward energy propagation of inertial oscillation is not observed, suggesting that it is not created at the surface by wind. Considering that the study area is both near a critical latitude and proximity to the continental slope, it is suggested that parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) plays a significant role in creating the baroclinic inertial oscillation.

  • The southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, Korea developed mud deposits as a belt in the inner shelf area from Pusan to Pohang. The general surface sediments consist of very poorly to poorly sorted muddy sediment. The differences of physical, geological and geomorphic conditions in the study area may control and produce distinctive foraminiferal populations. To establish a baseline of environment for the muddy sediments in the southwestern continental shelf of the East Sea, 17 stations were sampled and proved to contain 45 species of living benthic foraminifera. Analysis of the foraminiferal populations in cluster analysis recognized to five habitat zones. These habitat zones contain distinctive cooccurrences of the entire occurring species. Foraminiferal community composition appeared to be closely interrelated of water masses, depths, nutrients and sediment characters.

  • Ocean currents estimated from sea height anomalies derived from inter-calibrated TP/ERS are compared with daily mean currents measured with satellite-tracked drifters. The correlation coefficient between the geostrophic current from TP/ERS and surface current at 15 m depth from drifter tracks was found to be about 0.5. Due to the limitation of satellite ground tracks, small scale eddies less than 80 km are poorly resolved from TP/ERS. One of the interesting results of this study is that coastal currents along the eastern coast of Korea were well reproduced from sea height anomalies when the coastal currents were developed in association with eddies near the South Korean coast. The eddy kinetic energy (EKE) estimated from drifters, TP/ERS, and a numerical model are also compared. The EKE estimated from drifters was about 22 % higher than EKE calculated from TP/ERS. The pattern of low EKE level in the northern basin and high EKE level in the southern East Sea is shown in the EKE estimates derived from both the drifters and TP/ERS.

  • A three-dimensional hydrodynamical numerical model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is formulated having irregular coastal boundaries and non-uniform depth distribution represntative of nature. The developed model is used to derive the currents driven by a steady uniform wind stress on the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Numerical experiments have been performed with the model to determine the response of the shelf to stationary wind stress fields suddenly imposed on the shelf for wind directions of NW and SW winds and wind stress of 1.6dyn/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The dynamical feature of the derived circulation are presented and discussed.

  • In order to investigate the distribution of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Chuksan Harbor, East Sea, the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton have been evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2000 to October 2002. A total of 363 different phytoplankton species was observed and most of them were composed of diatoms. The mean abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton during the study period ranged from 56 ${\times}$ $10^3$ to 720 ${\times}$ $10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ and from 0.78 to 3.29 μg chl-a $L^{-1}$, respectively. The relative contribution of the size-fractionated phytoplankton to phytoplankton community showed difference according to seasons. The average contribution of nano-phytoplankton(<20 $\mu$m) was over 50% in the total abundance and biomass of the phytoplankton. Our results show that nano-phytoplankton play an important role in the southern coastal waters of the East Sea. And the environmental factors such as suspended substances, phosphates and silicates were positively correlated with the abundances and biomass of phytoplankton.

  • With a realistic geography and topography the Princeton Ocean Model is used to study the effects of topography, wind and time-varying Chanajiang (Yangtze) River discharge on the dispersion of the Chanaiiang River plume in the Yellow and East China Seas. The topographic feature of deepening offshore suppresses the offshore expansion of the discharged low salinity water while spreading along the coast is not hindered. Also the spreading of the Chanajiang River plume is very sensitive to wind conditions and the southerly wind is most responsible for the eastward expansion toward the Cheju Island. It is also shown that the influence of the Chanajiang River Diluted Water on the hydrography and circulation of the Yellow Sea including the South Sea of Korea is substantial even in the absence of tide, wind and current.

  • In order to determine if there is any physiographic preference for sedimentary organic matter preservation, two gravity cores were collected off Gampo, East Sea: one from continental shelf and the other from continental slope. Concentrations of porewater nutrients and total $CO_2$ were all higher in the continental shelf station, St. A, than the continental slope station, St. B. Meanwhile, concentrations of porewater sulfate decreased more rapidly at St. A than at St. B. Sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen contents were lower and decreased more rapidly at St. A than at St. B. These data characters of porewater chemistry and sedimentary organic matter suggest that the organic matter is more actively decomposed at St. A than at St. B. At least over the study area, therefore, the sedimentary organic matter in the continental slope appears to be better preserved than that in the continental shelf.

  • The calcium carbonate saturation state in the Ulleung Basin of East Sea was calculated using bottle data set of pH, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity obtained from the year 1999, 2014, 2017, and 2018 cruise. In the 2010s calcium carbonate saturation state was significantly lowered at all depth compared to the 1999 reference state. Accordingly calcite saturation horizon and aragonite saturation horizon shoaled to 500 m and 200 m, respectively. A key chemical species for the calcium carbonate saturation state, carbonate ion showed distinctive profile between upper and deep waters: it is moderately high (${\sim}175{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) in upper waters and very low (< ${\sim}50{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) in the deep waters. However the decreasing trend of carbonate ion concentration was pronounced in the upper water than deep waters, suggesting atmospheric $CO_2$ penetration is largely confined to the upper waters in the 2000s.

  • Oceanic conditions of the Tsushirm Wann Current (1WC) region in the southern area if the East Sea (the Japan Sea) are examined using data obtained from a CREAMS (Circulation Research if the East Asian Marginal Seas) cruise in June 1996. In 1990s, a lower temperature appears in $19\%$ and in this period, two branch of the TWC exist and the first branch of the TWC flows inshore if the Japanese coastal region compared to tfr1t in the other years, especially in the sfr1llower water layer at less th:1n about 2mm. The TWC cored with the higher salinity (>34.6 psu) is clearly observed over the continental shelf zone in the Japanese coastal region and offshore and identified by geostrophic calculation Intrusion if the TWC into the East Sea through the Korea Strait (the Tsushima Strait) makes the density structure in the water column change and the water mass in the TWC region is unstable based on Brunt- Vaisala frequency.
