Mean Flow and Variability in the Upper Portion of the East Sea Proper Water in the southwestern East Sea with APEX Floats

  • Drift data from 17 Argo profiling floats in the East Sea are used to understand the mean flow and its variability in the upper portion of the East Sea Proper Water (UESPW) (around 800 m). The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing of the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed in the range of from 0.2 to 4.29 cms-1 and the variability in the north of the UB is larger than that in the south of the UB. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 to 1.6 cms-1 are observed with the bottom topography. We found that the mean kinetic energy (MKE) and the mean eddy kinetic energy (EKE) are 1.3 and 2.1 cm2s-2 respectively.

Ocean Response to Typhoon Rusa in the South Sea of Korea and in the East China Sea

  • Typhoon Rusa passed over the East China Sea and crossed over the Korea Peninsula on August 31, 2002. The core of the typhoon passed directly over a data buoy mooring site at ($127^{\circ}45'E,\;34^{\circ}25'\;N$) and several ARGOS-tracked drifters capable of measuring salinity. Peak hourly mean wind speed reached 28 m/s at the mooring site and wind pattern in the East China Sea changed from southerly wind to northwesterly wind after the typhoon passage. Two or three days before the typhoon tile drifter displacement changed significantly and the region-wide circulation pattern changed from a northeastward current to a westward current one week after the typhoon had passed. The surface water in the East China Sea was cooled to about $4^{\circ}C$ under the typhoon core and a general cooling occurred in most of the East China Sea with the exception of the Chinese coast. The salinity as observed by the drifters in the East China Sea increased about 2 psu but the near-shore water along the Korean coast observed by the mooring was freshened about 3 psu. The freshening of near-shore water was caused by an intrusion of off-shore water rather than local freshening by typhoon precipitation.

동해 방사성탄소동위원소 연구 현황과 전망 (Current Status and Prospects Regarding Radiocarbon Studies in the East Sea)

  • Together with the development of measurement techniques, radiocarbon (14C) has been increasingly used as a key tool to investigate carbon cycling and associated biogeochemistry in the ocean. In this paper, the current status of radiocarbon studies in the East Sea (Japan Sea) is reviewed. Previously, spatiotemporal distribution and change of the water masses in the East Sea from 1979 to 1999 were investigated by using the 14C in the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Researches on sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) revealed that POC in the deep ocean has more complex and heterogeneous origins than we expected. In particular, since 2011, Korean researchers have been collecting sinking particle samples for more than 10 years, so it is expected that 14C of POC will provide important information to understand carbon cycling in relation to climate change. Although the quantity of 14C data published in the East Sea is still limited, the importance and the future direction of using 14C to understand the biogeochemical mechanisms of carbon cycling and its role as a carbon reservoir in the East Sea are detailed herein.

동해 심층수의 수괴 안정성 (Water Mass Stability of Deep Ocean Water in the East Sea)

  • Oceanographic observation and qualitative analysis for deep ocean water in the East Sea were carried out from January 2003 to January 2004, in order to understand the characteristics of deep sea water in the East Sea. Temporal and spatial variation of water masses were discussed from survey of the study area including the coastal sea of Kwangwon province in where the polar front mixing cold and warm water masses were formed. On the basis of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, water masses in the study area were divided into 5 major groups; (1) Low Saline Surface Water (LSSW) (2) Tsushima Surface water (TSW) (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) (4) North Korea Cold Water (NKCW) and (5) East Sea Proper Water (ESPW). In winter, surface water in coastal sea of Kwangwaan Kosung region were dominated by North Korean Cold Water (NKCW). As Tsushima warm current were enforced in summer, various water masses were vertically emerged in study area, in order of TSW, TMW, NKCW and ESPW. It is highly possible that the LSSW which occurred at surface water of september is originated from influx of fresh water due to the seasonal rainy spell. Nevertheless water masses existed within surface water were seasonally varied, water quality characteristics of East Sea Proper Water (ESPW) under 300 m did not changed all the seasons of the year.

둥근성게, 북쪽말똥성게 및 참전복의 일일 먹이소비량 및 해조류 먹이선택성 (Algal Consumption and Preference of Sea Urchins, Strongylocentrotus nudus, S. intermedius and Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai)

  • In 2006, we studied herbivore consumption rate and preference for algal species using laboratory experiments. In the no-choice feeding experiment, three herbivores (two sea urchins, Stronglyocentrotus nudus and Stronglyocentrotus intermedius and an abalone, Haliotis discus hannai) showed significantly (P<0.05) distinct preferences for four algae (Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Costaria costata and Ecklonia stolonifera). The alga preferred by S. nudus was L. japonica followed by U. pinnatifida, C. costata and E. stolonifera with respective daily feeding rates of $5.7{\pm}:0.85\;g,\;4.4{\pm}0.89\;g,\;3.1{\pm}0.39\;g\;and\;2.1{\pm}0.32\;g(mean{\pm}SE)$. A similar trend was found for S. intermedius. Interestingly, the herbivore consumption rates for the algae differed with or without competition. The competition stimulated the feeding activity for S. nudus, but lowered the activity for S. intermedius. The multi-choice feeding experiment confirmed that L. japonica was significantly preferred by two herbivores: S. nudus and H. discus hannai (Duncan's multiple range test, ANOVA, p<0.05).

동해의 해면지형 계산에 의한 지형류의 흐름 추정 (Estimation of Geostrophic Current Calculated from Sea Surface Topography in East Sea)

  • 본 논문에서는 위성고도계자료를 이용하여 개발된 평균해면모델인 CLS_SHOM과 지구중력장 모델인 EGM96으로부터 평균해면고와 지오이드고를 계산하여 해면지형을 계산하고, 이를 이용하여 지형류의 흐름을 추정하였다 지형류의 추정을 통하여 해양의 물리학적인 특성을 연구할 수 있기 때문에 외국에서는 많은 연구가 수행되어 왔으나 우리나라의 경우에는 연구가 이루어지지 않은 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 지형류에 대한 기초연구로서 동해에서의 지형류 흐름특성을 분석하여 제시하였다. 연구결과 동해지역에 대한 해면지형의 평균은 약 37cm로 계산되었고, 지형류 속도는 평균 -0.028m/sec로 계산되었다. 지형류의 흐름은 태평양 해수가 대한해협을 통과하면서 속도가 증가한 후에 일본열도의 외측단을 따라서 동북동 방향으로 거의 일정한 속도로 흐르다가 좁은 Tsugaru 해협과 Soya 해협을 통하여 유출되며, 한반도의 동해안을 따라서 북쪽으로 흐르다가 Soya해협과 북동북으로 향하여 Okhotsk해로 유출되는 것으로 나타났다.

Larval Anisakid Infections in Marine Fish from Three Sea Areas of the Republic of Korea

  • The present study was performed to determine the infection status of anisakid larvae in marine fish collected from 3 sea areas of the Republic of Korea. Total 86 marine fish (8 species) collected from the East Sea (Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do), 171 fish (10 species) from the South Sea (Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do), and 92 fish (7 species) from the Yellow Sea (Incheon Metropolitan City) were examined by both naked eyes and artificial digestion method. Among the total of 349 fish examined, 213 (61.0%) were infected with 8 species of anisakid larvae, i.e., Anisakis simplex, 6 types of Contracaecum spp., and Raphidascaris sp., and the mean larval density was 13.8 per infected fish. Anisakid larvae were detected in 45 fish (52.3%) from the East Sea, 131 fish (76.6%) from the South Sea, and 37 fish (40.2%) from the Yellow Sea. The average numbers of larvae detected were 4.0, 16.6, and 15.9, respectively. Anisakis simplex larvae were detected in 149 fish (42.7%), and the mean larval density was 9.0 per infected fish. They were found in 26 fish (30.2%) collected from the East Sea, 96 fish (56.1%) from the South Sea, and 27 fish (29.3%) from the Yellow Sea. The average numbers of larvae detected were 2.9, 10.3, and 10.5, respectively. Conclusively, the present study suggests that the infection rate and density of anisakid larvae are more or less higher in the fish from the South Sea than those from the East Sea or the Yellow Sea.

2006년 하계 경북 연안의 수온변화와 우렁쉥이 폐사 (The Variation of Water Temperature and the Mass Mortalities of Sea Squirt, Halocynthia roretzi along Gyeongbuk Coasts of the East Sea in Summer, 2006.)

  • 2006년 8월 경북 연안의 우렁쉥이 앙식장에서 대량폐사가 발생하였다. 폐사 원인을 규명하기 위하여 폐사 직후 폐사가 발생한 양식장을 대상으로 수질환경 조사와 병리학적 조사를 실시하였으나 특이점을 발견하지 못하였다. 그래서 폐사가 발생하기 직전 동해에 영향을 미친 10호 태풍 '우쿵'이 우렁쉥이 폐사에 영항을 미쳤을 것으로 가정하고 태풍 '우쿵' 통과 전후의 해황 자료를 분석하였다. 태풍 우쿵의 영향을 받기 전인 8월 초 중순 동해 연안은 전반적으로 저층 냉수의 용승으로 인하여 수심 10m 이심에서는 $15^{\circ}C$ 이하의 찬물이 존재하고 있었다. 그 후 매풍 '우쿵'의 영향으로 인한 북풍이 약 5일간 지속되면서 수온이 높은 외측의 표층수가 연안으로 밀려와 침강하는 현상(에크만 효과)이 발생하여 우렁쉥이가 매달려 있는 수심 $10{\sim}20m$의 수은이 일시에 $10^{\circ}C$ 이상 상승하여 약 5일간 지속되었다. 2006년 경북 연안의 양식 우렁쉥이는 장기간 냉수에 적응되어 있다가 태풍 '우쿵'의 영향으로 수온이 급상승함에 따른 수온 스트레스로 인하여 대량폐사된 것으로 추정된다.

동해와 서해의 살오징어(Todarodes pacificus) 회유 및 분포에 관한 고찰 (Review of Migration and Distribution of the Common Squid (Todarodes pacificus) in the East Sea and the Yellow Sea)

  • 본 리뷰는 한국의 중요한 수산자원인 살오징어(Todarodes pacificus)의 동해와 서해 어획량 변동 원인을 살오징어 난/자치어 수송부터 회유경로 및 어장 분포에 관점으로 논의하였다. 우리나라 살오징어 어획량은 1980년 이후 기후체제전환에 따라 변화가 있어 왔으며 이는 동해와 서해의 어획량 변동 경향이 달랐다. PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation)는 동해로 유입되는 난류 수송량과 음의 상관관계가 있는데 PDO가 양의 위상이었던 1980s에는 서해에서는 어획량이 많았고 동해에서는 어획량이 적었다. 반면, PDO가 음의 위상이었던 1990s년대에는 동해 어획량이 많고 서해에서는 적었다. 이는 살오징어가 난류를 따라 북상하거나 난류를 거슬러 남하회유를 하는 생활사에 기인된다. 동해의 경우, 난류가 강(약)할 때, 난류경로가 한국의 동해 연안 쪽(동해 중부 해역 및 일본 연안 쪽)으로 치우치게 되는데 이는 PDO가 양의 위상이었던 1980년대에 어장이 울릉도 동편에 위치하였던 반면 PDO가 음의 위상이었던 1990년대에 어장이 동해 연안에 위치한 것과 관련있다. 서해 살오징어 어획량이 증가한 1980년대에는 동해로 유입되는 난류수 수송량이 감소한 반면 서해로 유입되는 난류수는 증가하였으며 이는 서해로 수송되는 유생의 양을 증가시키는 주요 원인이 된다.

Calibration and Validation of the Estimated Chlorophyll a Derived from KOMPSAT/OSMI Data and Fisheries Application in the East China Sea

  • A comparison between the estimated chlorophyll a from OSMI, the SeaWiFS and the chlorophyll a measured from the research cruises of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute was made. The updated empirical algorithm for calibrating and validating of the estimated chlorophyll a in the East China Sea was formulated by relationship between the estimated chlorophyll a and the field one. The relationship between the chlorophyll a and the band ratio(nLw490/555) was still highest in the OSMI data after launching of KOMPSAT satellite. The distributions of OSMI chlorophyll a were compared with those of sea surface temperature, zooplankton biomass, and catch amounts of the Pacific mackerel in the East China Sea. In case of the relationships in specially winter seasons of 2002 and 2004, the zooplankton and the fish were totally depended on the distributions of SST than those of chlorophyll a.
