In order to standardize the juvenile abalone rearing technique, we selected sample farms by region in East, West and South coasts of Korea and Jeju island. We also have reviewed previous literature and visited farms to survey on the management of abalone juvenile production, spawning, hatching and so forth. Results of investigation are as follows: The light colors of tanks for larvae breeding are good for a frequent examination of larvae behaviour changes during the breeding period. The tank for the abalone juvenile production is a rectangular form in general and its size should amount to 3.5 m in length and 1.2 m width. It also should be built with proper drainage. The best age and size of adult for juvenile production are 3-6 years old individuals, with 9-12 cm separate burial and 125-150 g average weight. To induce spawning, the use of the exposure on air and ultraviolet ray together was the most effective. The density of larvae by plate should be 150-300 individuals and the proper stocking density was est imated and amount to 10-30 individuals. It has been shown that a correlation between water surface size($X_1$) and number of plates ($Y_1$), when producing abalone juveniles, is quite high and it is described by equation $Y_1=138.88X_1-5,736.8\;(R^2=0.9028)$. In addition, it has also been shown that a correlation between production of abalone juveniles ($Y_2$) and number of plates ($X_2$) is high and it is described by equation $Y_2=4.554X_2+12,493\;(R^2=0.8818)$. In Jindo region where a mass production of juveniles abalone has been done, it was shown, that a correlation between rearing water surface size ($X_3$) and production of juveniles abalone ($Y_3$) is very high and this relationship was described by the equation $Y_3=747.03X_2+94,359(R^2=0.9809)$. It has also been shown that a correlation between water surface size ($X_4$) and production of abalone juveniles ($Y_4$) in nationwide is high and the relationship between this variables was described by equation $Y_4=635.85X_4+99,923\;(R^2=0.9020)$.
To evaluate the aquaculture potential of a subtrophic noble scallop, Chlamys nobilis in Korean waters, nursery growth of the species was studied on two remote Jeju coasts, Jigwido and Ongpori. The early growth performance of the first 60 days after settlement was expressed as: $SL=0.1664e^{0.0579x}$ ($r^2=0.924$), where x stands for days after settlement and SL for shell length. The early spats sized 1 mm in average shell length became $4.1{\pm}0.8\;mm$ after a month of nursery culture, thereafter grew to $13.0{\pm}1.9$, $23.1{\pm}3.1$, $30.3{\pm}4.3$, and $33.6{\pm}5.2\;mm$ for consecutive 4 months in Jigwido coastal area. Mean growth gains (mean daily gains in parenthesis) were $76.7{\pm}7.7$ ($165.6{\mu}m$), $73.3{\pm}7.3$ ($154.0{\mu}m$), $69.4{\pm}8.4$ ($140.0{\mu}m$), and $68.7{\pm}8.5\;mm$ ($137.4{\mu}m$), in depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 m, respectively. The growth rate was significantly decreased as cultured in deeper place (p < 0.05). As culturing density was higher, growth performance of the scallop was decreased in both locations. Overall, in our preliminary study, the growth performance of scallop in Korean waters was not better than that in Japan, but it seems to be worth doing further study for successful introduction to Korean waters.

Objective: Gelidium amansii (Lamouroux) is a red alga belonging to the family Gelidaceae and is commonly found in the shallow coasts of many East Asian countries, including Korea, China, and Japan. G. amansii has traditionally been utilized as an edible alga, and has various biological activities. The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary supplementation of G. amansii could be useful for improving ruminal fermentation. Methods: As assessed by in vitro fermentation parameters such as pH, total gas, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, gas profile (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and ammonia), and microbial growth rate was compared to a basal diet with timothy hay. Cannulated Holstein cows were used as rumen fluid donors and 15 mL rumen fluid: buffer (1:2) was incubated for up to 72 h with four treatments with three replicates. The treatments were: control (timothy only), basal diet with 1% G. amansii extract, basal diet with 3% G. amansii extract, and basal diet with 5% G. amansii extract. Results: Overall, the results of our study indicate that G. amansii supplementation is potentially useful for improving ruminant growth performance, via increased total gas and VFA production, but does come with some undesirable effects, such as increasing pH, ammonia concentration, and methane production. In particular, real-time polymerase chain reaction indicated that the methanogenic archaea and Fibrobacter succinogenes populations were significantly reduced, while the Ruminococcus flavefaciens populations were significantly increased at 24 h, when supplemented with G. amansii extracts as compared with controls. Conclusion: More research is required to elucidate what G. amansii supplementation can do to improve growth performance, and its effect on methane production in ruminants.

Seaweeds were identified after qualitative sampling at 14 stations of Dokdo coasts from May to July 2013 and seaweeds and animals inhabiting 23 Eisenia bicyclis plants were examined to evaluate its ecological role. Biomass was calculated by using regression between stipe length and weight of E. bicyclis. A total of 128 species were identified, including 18 green, 35 brown, and 75 red algae. Coarsely branched form was dominant functional group occupying 47.66% and 91 species (71.09%) were in ESG I group, growing in stable environmental coast. Also, R/P, C/P, and (R+C)/P were 2.14, 0.51, and 2.66, respectively showing temperate and mixed flora. Biomass and density of E.bicyclis were $23.74kg\;m^{-2}$ and 64 fronds $m^{-2}$. Twelve seaweeds and 83 animal species (15 Annelida, 25 Mollusca, 34 Arthropoda, 3 Echinodermata, and 6 others) were observed from 23 holdfasts and Ericthonius pugnax was dominant taxon having 538 (43.11%) of 1,248 animal individuals. These results indicate that E.bicyclis is a keystone species showing very important ecological role. In conclusion, the number of seaweeds increased because of intensive research and dominance of coarsely branched form and ESG I group seaweeds, representing that environmental condition of Dokdo is still intact.

In the ocean, it is difficult to separate the effects of one cause due to the multiple causes, but the self-organizing map can be analyzed by adding other factors to the cluster result. Therefore, in this study, the results of the clustering of sea level data were applied to sea surface temperature. Sea level data was clustered into a total of 6 nodes. The difference between sea surface temperature and sea level height has a one-month delay, which applied sea surface temperature data a month ago to the clustered results. As a result of comparing the mean of sea surface temperature of 140 to 150°E, where the sea surface temperature was variously distributed, in the case of nodes 1, 3, and 5, it was possible to find a meandering sea surface temperature distribution that is clearly distinguished from the sea level data. While nodes 2, 4 and 6, the sea surface temperature distribution was smooth. In this study, sea surface temperature data were applied to the clustered results of sea level data, but later it is necessary to apply wind or geostrophic velocity data to compare.

A numerical simulations were performed to investigate the storm surge during the passage of Typhoon Maemi on the coast of Busan. The typhoon landed on the southern coasts of Korean Peninsula at 21:00, September 12, 2003 with a central pressure of 950 hPa, and the typhoon resulted on the worst coastal disaster on the coast of Busan in the last decades. Observed storm surges at Busan, Yeosu, Tongyoung, Masan, Jeju and Seogwipo harbors during the passage of the typhoon were compared with the computed data. The simulated storm surge time series were in good agreement with the observations. The simulated peak storm surges were estimated to be 230 cm at Masan harbor, 200 cm at Yeosu harbor and Tongyoung harbor, and 75 cm at Busan harbor. The computed storm surges along the east coast of Busan measure 52 to 55 cm, exhibiting a gradual reduction in surge height as one moves further from the coast of Busan. Therefore, coastal inundation due to the storm surge in the semi-enclosed bay can induce great disasters, and the simulated results can be used as the important data to reduce the impact of a typhoon-induced coastal disaster in the future.

To clarify the spatial distribution pattern of macrozoobenthos in Korean coastal waters in the summer season and investigate the relationship between community structure and benthic environmental factors, field surveys on community structure and benthic environmental factors were conducted at 117 stations in August 2017. A total of 613 macrobenthic species were identified, with the mean density of 1,228 ind./m2 and the mean biomass (wet weight) of 110.9 g WW/m2. Rich biodiversity was found at stations near Wando and along the coast of the East Sea, and there is a trend that stations with greater biodiversity also showed higher mean density as well. The dominant species in all the coastal areas in Korea was Heteromastus filiformis, which were found at most of the stations during the survey. The relatively deep areas in the East Sea were dominated by Magelona johnsoni and Maldane cristata, which were the third and ninth dominant species in the study areas, respectively. Pseudopolydora kempi and Rhynchospio sp. were observed only at the station located in the Nakdong River estuary. From the cluster analysis the stations could be clustered into three station groups with more similar faunal composition. Group A was located in the eastern coast, characterized with deep water depth and low levels of sand contents, while Group B was located in the southern coast, characterized by shallow depth of water and high content of mud and organic matter. Lastly, Group C was in the western coast, demonstrating low levels of mud content and organic matters. The biodiversity of macrobenthic species in the study area showed high positive correlation coefficients with benthic environmental factors such as sorting, clay, silt, and contents of organic matter in sediments, but negatively correlated with the sand contents. Major dominant species, Theora lata and Eriopisella sechellensis, both showed negative correlation coefficients with the sand contents, but a relatively high positive correlation with the levels of organic contents. It can be concluded that the spatial distribution patterns of macrobenthic organisms in Korean coastal waters are affected by depth, sediment type, and contents of organic matters.

We investigated the concentration levels and evaluated the distributions of 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans(PCDD/Fs), 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls(DLPCBs) and 24 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediment and organism from various culturing grounds in Korean coast. The levels of PCDD/Fs, DLPCBs, and PBDEs in sediment samples ranged from 0.03 to 2.9(Mean${\pm}$SD, $1.2{\pm}0.89$) pg $WHO_{2005}$-TEQ $g^{-1}$ dry weight(dw), ND(not detected) to 1.1($0.09{\pm}0.19$) pg $WHO_{2005}$-TEQ $g^{-1}$ dw, and ND to 16.6($2.96{\pm}3.53$) ng $g^{-1}$ dw, respectively. Also, the levels of PCDD/Fs, DLPCBs, and PBDEs in culturing organisms ranged from ND to 0.24($0.07{\pm}0.06$) pg $WHO_{2005}$-TEQ $g^{-1}$ wet weight(ww), ND to 0.11($0.04{\pm}0.04$) pg $WHO_{2005}$-TEQ $g^{-1}$ ww, and 0.05 to 0.29($0.13{\pm}0.06$) ng $g^{-1}$ ww, respectively. The levels of total dioxins(PCDD/Fs+DLPCBs) and PBDEs in sediments from East and South sea were four to seven times higher than those from West sea. PCDD/Fs had dominant contribution(mean, 94%) for TEQ concentration in sediment, whereas relatively higher contribution of DLPCBs(33%) were shown in culturing organism than sediment. BDE209 was a dominant congener in both matrix. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs, DLPCBs and PBDEs were in decreasing trends in Korea coasts compared to previous results.

Low salt fermented products of anchovy, Engraulis japonica, caught in the coasts of East Sea of Korea, were prepared tentatively and also discussed the retarding effect of rancidity of the product by the addition of BHA or red pepper. Fresh anchovies were purchased from Kichang fish market. The raw samples were mixed with $8\%$ table salt, $0.5\%$ lactic acid, $6\%$ sorbitol, $4\%$ ethyl alcohol and $0.02\%$ BHA or $0.5\%$ red pepper and filled in the glass bottles and sealed with the cap. Conventional fermented product of anchovy as a control was prepared from fresh anchovy and $20\%$ salt only. After preparation, the products were fermented for 90 days at room temperature. Amino-nitrogen, TBA value, peroxide value and viable counts of bacteria of these products were determined and also evaluation of their qualify was compared with control product by sensory evaluation during fermentation. Amino-nitrogen contents of the low salt products reached a peak in 55 days of fermentation, and the volatile basic nitrogen contents ranged $100\;mg\%$ even after 90 days of fermentation. Thiobarbituric acid value of the product with $0.02\%$ BHA showed a little increase up to 65 days of fermentation regardless of salt contents, while that of the control product increased sharply up to 65 days and then decreased gradually. BHA was effective on retarding rancidity of fermented products of anchovy and red pepper was also slightly effective. All the products showed the highest cell population in about 55 days of fermentation. Judging from the results of analysis and sensory evaluation, the low salt fermented product of anchovy could be prepared with $8\%$ salt, $0.5\%$ lactic acid, $6\%$ sorbitol, $4\%$ ethyl alcohol and $0.02\%$ BHA or $0.5\%$ red pepper to the fresh round anchovy.

The short-term variation of salinity and temperature in a dyked estuarine environment is mainly controlled by the freshwater discharge from the dyke. We examined the distribution of salinity and temperature by the freshwater discharge in the Yeongsan River estuary using the CTD data obtained from 8 stations through three surveys in June (weak discharge) and August (intensive discharge), 2010. During the weak discharge in June, the surface salinity showed 30-32.5 psu and its horizontal gradient was relatively high around Goha-do (0.25~0.32 psu/km). On the other hand, the salinity of the bottom layer was almost constant in the range of 33 psu. Water temperature ranged $19{\sim}21^{\circ}C$ and displayed higher gradient in north-south direction than the gradient of east-west direction. During the intensive freshwater discharge on August 12, the salinity dropped to 9~26 psu. The maximum horizontal gradient of surface salinity reached 3.8 psu/km in the north of Goha-do where the strong salinity front was formed, and the horizontal salinity gradient of bottom layer was 0.28 psu/km. The horizontal gradient of water temperature was $-0.45^{\circ}C/km$ in the surface and $-0.12^{\circ}C/km$ in the bottom with high surface temperature near the dyke and decreasing gradually to the river mouth. After 3 days of the intensive discharge ($3^{rd}$ survey), the surface salinity increased to 22~26 psu. However, there still existed relatively high horizontal gradient around Goha-do. In the mean time, the bottom salinity decreased to 26.5~27.5 psu, but its gradient was not big as much as the surface gradient. According to time series of CTD profile near the dyke, the discharged fresh water jetted down temporarily and then recovered gradually with the recovering speed of 0.4 m/hour for the discharge case of $13{\times}10^6$ ton. Due to the combined effects of freshwater discharge and surface heating during the summer of 2010, the Yeongsan estuary, in general, underwent intensified vertical stratification, which in turn caused the inhibition of vertical mixing, especially inside area of estuary. Based on the spatial distribution of salinity and temperature, the Yeongsan estuary can be divided into three regions: the Goha-do area with strong horizontal gradient of salinity and temperature, inner estuary from Goha-do to the dyke with low salinity, and outer estuary from Goha-do to the coasts with relatively high salinity.
