BIM Based Intelligent Excavation System (BIM 기반 지능형 굴삭시스템)

  • Earthwork is important in terms of construction time and duration, and highly related to the construction productivity. However, current earthwork system has stick to labor intensive process depending on skilled operator's heuristic decision making, so it is hard to improve overall productivity. To overcome this drawback, this paper presents a BIM based Intelligent Excavation System(IES). The BIM technology is applied in the excavation task planning system, Human-Machine Interface for remote-control/autonomous work environment, and web-based Project Management Information System(PMIS) in the IES integration process, and the results are addressed.

Development of a Work Information Model and a Work Path Simulator for an Intelligent Excavation (지능형 굴삭을 위한 작업정보모델 및 작업경로 시뮬레이터 개발)

  • The development of construction automation systems is proposed as a potent solution to the difficulties encountered by the construction industry and the preparation for the rapidly changing construction environment. A research concerning an intelligent excavation system has taken place since 2006. The intelligent excavation system has several functions for environment sensing, 3D site modeling, work planning, work path generation, unmaned control, and information management. This paper presents a space information model and a work path simulator for work planning and work path generation which is one of key technologies required to apply the earthwork system to the real world. A data structure for an earthwork site is suggested. It overcomes the limitations of previous data structures such as Quadtree and Octree. The work path simulator can generate an effective work path with considering information on work environment, equipment and operator's heuristic. The work path generated by the simulator is compared with that suggested by human operators.

  • Nowadays, the construction industry is suffering from the decrease of labor productivity caused by the lack of skilled workers and the aging labor forces. The hazardous work conditions and safety problems still exist at the construction sites. The earthwork operation is not the exception. The number of skilled earthwork equipment operators has been rapidly reduced and the equipment needs to be operated in dangerous / hazardous work sites. Thus, through the development of intelligent excavating system, Intelligent Excavating System(I.E.S) research team tries to enhance the safety of work environment, productivity, quality, and payability of the earthwork operation. It is also expected that this research contributes to the development of fundamental construction automation technologies and to the creation a new market sector.

  • This research attempts to develop 4D CAD function to support optimal road design by expanding the existing 4D CAD utilization system, which focused on construction phase, to the design phase. The functions such as earthwork simulation for selecting of road alignment, alternative route simulation and structure type simulation were suggested as functions to support road design. Through those virtual reality (VR) functions, visual confirmation of the condition of route and earthwork Is possible by the developed system, and an optimal alternative route can be selected by carrying out layout simulation of the alternative route. The functions presented in this research provide the decision making tools based virtual model for efficient support to road design.

  • Digital high resolution cameras are widely available, and are increasingly use in digital close-range photogrammetry. And photogrammetry instruments are developing rapidly and the precision is improving continuously, The building of 3D terrains of high precision are possible and the calculation of the areas or the earthwork volumes have high precision due to the development of the technique of the spatial information system using computer, In this study, using the digital camera which has capacity of keeping numerical value by itself and easy carrying, we analyze the positioning error according to various change of photographing condition. Also we t]v to find a effective method of acquiring basis data for 3D monitoring of high-accuracy in pixel degree through digital close-range photogrammetry with bundle adjustment for local terrain model generation and earthwork volume.

  • Railroad roadbed was consisted into structure types that earthwork, tunnel, bridge and joint sections. Joint section was affected a large factor confidence and safety of the train running by stiffness transition zone that track substructure stiffness change section as like between tunnel and earthwork from ballast track to concrete track. These problems are the results of increased dynamic wheel loads, which also lead to wear and tear on vehicle components and contribute to poor ride quality. The study presented in this paper was conducted on model test by using Wheel Moving Loading System.

  • Calculation of quantity at construction sites is a factor that has a great influence on construction costs, and it is important to calculate accurate values. In this study, topographic model was created by using drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR to estimate earthwork volume. ortho image and DSM (Digital Surface Model) were constructed for the study area by drone photogrammetry, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of the target area was established using drone LiDAR. And through accuracy evaluation, accuracy of each method are 0.034m, 0.35m in horizontal direction, 0.054m, 0.25m in vertical direction. Through the research, the usability of drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR for constructing geospatial information was presented. As a result of calculating the volume of the study site, the UAV photogrammetry showed a difference of 1528.1㎥ from the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) survey performance, and the 3D Laser Scanner showed difference of 160.28㎥. The difference in the volume of earthwork is due to the difference in the topographic model, and the efficiency of volume calculation by drone LiDAR could be suggested. In the future, if additional research is conducted using GNSS surveying and drone LiDAR to establish topographic model in the forest area and evaluate its usability, the efficiency of terrain model construction using drone LiDAR can be suggested.

Development of 4D System based on New Methodology for Visualizing Construction Schedule Data for Civil Engineering Projects (토목시설물 공사관리 시각화를 취한 4D시스템 적용방안)

  • One of the main functions of the 4D system includes visualizing numerical schedule data in construction. The existing 4D tools have an excellent function for simulating building projects that all activities are progressed according to vertical work zone. However, it is not easy to implement all of it in the civil engineering project because the construction activities of highway and railway projects are progressed on the horizontal work zone and the 4D simulation for those projects should include earthwork objects that depend on the natural ground condition. This study suggests a new methodology for improving those limitations of 4D system for the civil engineering project and develops a new system by the suggested methodology. To verify the developed system, this study attempts to simulate 4D object for horizontal elements such as earthwork, paving work and tunneling work. The morphing and multi-texturing techniques developed in the study can be new approaches to simulate 4D object for the earthwork such as cutting and banking whose activities are progressed on the natural ground condition. The research results can be expected as a draft function for improving the application of 4D system in civil engineering projects.

  • Recent advances in automation and robotic technologies in the manufacturing industry suggest that the greater level of automation may be extremely beneficial for the construction industry. However, only some of the high-technology advances may be applied to the construction industry due to the fast-changing construction environment in which work locations are constantly changing and material, equipment, and workers are always moving. The earthwork operation for site development is a good candidate for applying automation technology, because it is a very repetitive and tedious task and needs lots of construction equipment. This paper presents the model of a construction environment and a moving plan for an automated earthwork system, which can produce an effective moving path of an excavator platform with an Octree model. To generate the moving path, the know-how of skilled operators and construction managers is added in the proposed model.

  • This study presents a geographic information system based dump truck route exploring system (DRES) which provides construction managers and hauling operators with efficient route information that can improve earthmoving productivity by reducing hauling time. The system is comprised of Network Analyst from Esri as a route exploring engine and a network data model. The network data model includes information on weight limit of bridges, height limit of pedestrian overpasses, and one way that impedes dump trucks' hauling efficiency. A construction manager is expected to input origin and destination point in the user interface, and the system generates an efficient route that avoids bridges with weight limit or pedestrian overpasses with height limit. The system was applied to a real earthmoving project to test its applicability, and it was found that the system functions as intended.
