Structural health monitoring (SHM) has been related to damage identification with either operational loads or other environmental loading playing a significant complimentary role in terms of structural safety. In this study, a non-parametric method of time frequency analysis on the measurement is used to address the time-frequency representation for modal parameter estimation and system damage identification of structure. The method employs the wavelet decomposition of dynamic data by using the modified complex Morlet wavelet with variable central frequency (MCMW+VCF). Through detail discussion on the selection of model parameter in wavelet analysis, the method is applied to study the dynamic response of both steel structure and reinforced concrete frame under white noise excitation as well as earthquake excitation from shaking table test. Application of the method to building earthquake response measurement is also examined. It is shown that by using the spectrogram generated from MCMW+VCF method, with suitable selected model parameter, one can clearly identify the time-varying modal frequency of the reinforced concrete structure under earthquake excitation. Discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of the method through field experiments are also presented.
The volcanic ash can spread out over hundreds of kilometers in case of large volcanic eruption. The deposition of volcanic ash may induce damages in urban area and transportation facilities. In order to respond volcanic hazard, it is necessary to estimate efficiently the diffusion area of volcanic ash. The purpose of this study is to compare in-situ volcanic deposition and satellite images of the volcanic eruption case. In this study, we used Near-Infrared (NIR) channels 7 and 8 of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) images for Mt. Aso eruption in 16:40 (UTC) on October 7, 2016. To estimate deposit area clearly, we applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a series of morphology filtering (Eroded, Opening, Dilation, and Closing), respectively. In addition, we compared the field data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) report about Aso volcano eruption in 2016. From the results, we could extract volcanic ash deposition area of about $380km^2$. In the traditional method, ash deposition area was estimated by human activity such as direct measurement and hearsay evidence, which are inefficient and time consuming effort. Our results inferred that satellite imagery is one of the powerful tools for surface change mapping in case of large volcanic eruption.
In the past decades, complain about ground vibration and noise induced by pile driving has been quickly increased. Because of that, auger The role of train has expanded as mass transportation according to the increase of train passenger. The train operation personnel are more emphasis on the safety of train operation due to the increase of train's role. The reason is that the train transports many people daily. So, if there is natural disaster, such as earthquake, flood, high temperature, and so on, it will become disaster. Therefore, this paper introduces and proposes wayside detection system, which can be helpful for the safety assurance of train operation.
Recent SAR systems provide fully polarimetric SAR data, which is known to be useful in a variety of applications such as disaster monitoring, target recognition, and land cover classification. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of polarization SAR data for landslide detection. The detectability of different SAR parameters was investigated based on the supervised classification approach. The classifier used in this study is the Adaptive Boosting algorithms. A fully polarimetric L-band PALSAR-2 data was used to examine landslides caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Kyushu, Japan. Experimental results show that fully polarimetric features from the target decomposition technique can provide improved detectability of landslide site with significant reduction of false alarms as compared with the single polarimetric observables.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is used to provide reliable information about the structure's integrity in near realtime following extreme incidents such as earthquakes, considering the inevitable aging and degradation that occurs in operating environments. This paper experimentally investigates an integrated wireless sensor network (Wi-SN) based monitoring technique for damage detection in concrete structures. An effective SHM technique can be used to detect potential structural damage based on post-earthquake data. Two novel methods are proposed for damage detection in reinforced concrete (RC) building structures including: (i) Jerk Energy Method (JEM), which is based on time-domain analysis, and (ii) Modal Contributing Parameter (MCP), which is based on frequency-domain analysis. Wireless accelerometer sensors are installed at each story level to monitor the dynamic responses from the building structure. Prior knowledge of the initial state (immediately after construction) of the structure is not required in these methods. Proposed methods only use responses recorded during ambient vibration state (i.e., operational state) to estimate the damage index. Herein, the experimental studies serve as an illustration of the procedures. In particular, (i) a 3-story shear-type steel frame model is analyzed for several damage scenarios and (ii) 2-story RC scaled down (at 1/6th) building models, simulated and verified under experimental tests on a shaking table. As a result, in addition to the usual benefits like system adaptability, and cost-effectiveness, the proposed sensing system does not require a cluster of sensors. The spatial information in the real-time recorded data is used in global damage identification stage of SHM. Whereas in next stage of SHM, the damage is detected at the story level. Experimental results also show the efficiency and superior performance of the proposed measuring techniques.
In this paper, the harmonic displacement response of a damaged square plate with all-over part-through damage parallel to one edge is utilized as the input signal function in wavelet analysis. The method requires the properties of the damaged plate, i.e., no information about the original undamaged structure is required. The location of damage is identified by sudden changes in the spatial variation of transformed response. The incurred damage causes a change in the stiffness or mass of the plate. This causes a localized singularity which can be identified by a wavelet analysis of the displacement response. In this study via numerical examples shown by using harmonic response is more versatile and effective compared with the static deflection response, specially in the presence of noise. In the light of the obtained results, suggestions for future work are presented and discussed.

Using the life cycle cost concept, optimum maintenance and retrofit planning for reliable seismic performance is suggested the overall life cycle cost to be minimized including the initial cost, the costs of inspection, repair, and failure. Limit states of the bridges are defined. And failure probabilities are computed through crossing theory. The effect of maintenance and retrofit is represented using the probability of damage detection and event tree analysis. Optimization of maintenance and retrofit planning method proposed from this research was applied to numerical examples. The analysis incorporates the acceleration and site conditions prescribed in the code, and the quality of inspection methods.

Artificial blasts, defined as seismo-acoustic events, were discriminated from natural earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula by the seismo-acoustic analysis. Total 197 seismo-acoustic events corresponding to 9 percent of seismic events in 2002 were analyzed and classified as artificial surface blasts. Events distribution pattern of the seismo-acoustic events in 2002 was similar to the previous result in 1999-2001, except for two regions. Newly determined seismo-acoustic events were added to the previous artificial blast database. To extend infrasound detection capability, new small-scale infrasound array(TJIAR) was installed in KIGAM. Preliminary analysis for the small array was conducted to discriminate artificial blasts in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula. The small array discriminated S seismo-acoustic events during short period analysis. And two infrasound arrays(TJIAR and CHNAR) were used to determine approximate sound source location by cross bearing method.

Remotely sensed data provide valuable information on land monitoring due to multi-temporal observation over large areas. Especially, high resolution imagery with 0.6~1.0 m spatial resolutions contain a wealth of information and therefore are very useful for thematic mapping and monitoring change in urban areas. Recently, remote sensing technology has been successfully utilized for natural disaster monitoring such as forest fire, earthquake, and floods. In this paper, an efficient change detection method based on texture differences observed from high resolution multi-temporal data sets is proposed for mapping disaster damage and extracting damage information. It is composed of two parts: feature extraction and detection process. Timely and accurate information on disaster damage can provide an effective decision making and response related to damage.
The $M_W$ 9.0 thrust-fault earthquake has occurred in the Pacific coast of Tohoku, Japan, on March 11, 2011. We present the detection of the great earthquake and analyze T-waves associated with the main event and two other big aftershocks ($M_W$ > 7) recorded in a hydroacoustic array (H11N) in the Pacific Ocean by performing array and spectral analysis to examine characteristics of T-waves generated from the big events. The complex rupture process of the main event directly influences on the shape of the T-waves, and the peak locates on where T-waves excited from fast rupturing process arrive. We compare the two aftershocks with different fault type and show that the fault type and the source depth change shape and spectral contents of T-waves.
