Time-domain commercial codes are widely used to evaluate the seismic behavior of tunnels. Those tools offer a good insight into the performance and the failure mechanism of tunnels under earthquake loading. Viscous damping is generally employed in the dynamic analysis to consider damping at very small strains in some cases, and the Rayleigh damping is commonly used one. Many procedures to obtain the damping parameters have been proposed but they are seldom discussed. This paper illustrates the influence of the Rayleigh damping formulation on the tunnel visco-elastic behavior under earthquake. Four Rayleigh damping determination procedures and three soil shear velocity profiles are accounted for. The results show significant differences in the free-field and in the tunnel response caused by different procedures. The difference is somewhat decreased when the soil site fundamental frequency is increased. The conventional method which consists of using solely the first soil natural mode to determine the viscous damping parameters may lead to an unsafe seismic design of the tunnel. In general, using five times site fundamental frequency to obtain the damping formulation can provide relatively conservative results.
In this paper,soil-structure interaction effects on the seismic response of multistory frame structure on raft foundation are numerically analyzed. The foundation soil profile is assumed to consists of a clay layer of variable thicknessresting on bedrock. Amodified plane-strain numerical model isformed in the software Plaxis, and both free vibration analysis, and earthquake analysis for a selected ground motion accelerogram are performed. The behavior of the structure is assumed to be linear elastic with Rayleigh viscous damping included. The behavior of the clay layer is modeled with a Hardening soil model with small strain stiffness. The computed results in terms of fundamental period and structural horizontal displacementsfor the case of fixed base and for different thicknesses of clay layer are presented, compared, and discussed.
Pile-supported wharves, port structures that support the upper deck, are installed on sloping ground. The sloping ground should be covered with a rubble mound or artificial blocks to protect the interior material from erosion caused by wave force. The behavior of the pile may vary during an earthquake if a rubble mound is installed on the slope. However, studies evaluating the effect of rubble mound on the pile during an earthquake are limited. Here, we performed dynamic centrifuge model tests to evaluate the dynamic behavior of piles installed in a slope reinforced with rubble mound. In the structure, some sections (single-pile, 2×2 group-pile) were selected for the experiment. The moment of the group-pile decreased by up to 26% upon installation of the rubble mound, whereas the moment of the single-pile increased by up to 41%, thus demonstrating conflicting results.
This research investigates a rotary disk with variable cross-section and incompressible hyperelastic material with functionally graded properties in large hyperelastic deformations. For this purpose, a power relation has been used to express the changes in cross-section and properties of hyperelastic material. So that (m) represents the changes in cross-section and (n) represents the manner of changes in material properties. The constants used for hyperelastic material have been obtained from experimental data. The obtained equations have been solved for different m, n, and (angular velocity) values, and the values of radial stresses, tangential stresses, and elongation have been compared. The results show that m and n have a significant impact on disk behavior, so the expected behavior of the disk can be obtained by an optimal selection of these two parameters.

In their role as stewards of organizational information technology (IT), IT managers participate in crisis management activities. While much has been said about the power of technology in improving preparation for emergencies, the behavior of IT managers in crisis situations is not well understood. This paper addresses IT manager actions during the crisis response effort, when appropriate actions need to be taken at short notice. Recognizing that few guidelines exist for IT managers in these situations, we use recommendations from the crisis management literature in analyzing five earthquake cases from Japan and Taiwan. We identify several recommendations from this set for IT managers, which are related mainly to communications and leadership behaviors, suggesting that the IT manager role is a vital one in crisis response. The research additionally shows that recommendations from the crisis management literature have value also when applied to IT managers. Finally, we conclude on several ways that our understanding of IT manager crisis response could be developed by future research.
The objective of the research stated herein is to observe the actual responses of a low-rise nonseismic moment-resisting reinforced concrete frame subjected to varied levels of earthquake ground motions. First, the reduction scale for the model was determined as 1 : 5 considering the capacity of the shaking table to be used and the model was manufactured according to the similitude law. This model was, then, subjected to the shaking table motions simulating Taft N21E component earthquake ground motions, whose peak ground accelations (PGAs) were modified to 0.12g, 0.2g, 0.3g, and 0.4g. The lateral accelerations and displacements at each story and local deformations at the critical reginos of the structure were measured. The base shear was measured by using self-made load cells. Before and after each earthquake simulation test, free vibration tests were performed to find the change in the natural period and damping ratio of the model. The test data on the global and local behaviors are interpreted. The model showed the linear elastic behavior under the Taft N21E motion with the PGA if 0.12g, which represents the design earthquake in Korea. The maximum base shear was 1.8tf, approximately 4.7 times the design base shear. The model revealed fairly good resistance to the higher level of earthquake simulation tests. The main components of its resistance to the high level of earthquakes appeared to be 1) the high overstrength, 2) the elongation of the fundamental period, and 3) the minor energy dissipation by inelastic deformations. The drifts of the model under these tests were approximately within the allowable limit.
Three-dimensional finite element analysis of 1,300 ton stainless water reservoirs was undertaken to consider differential settlement effects of the reservoir when subjected to earthquake loads. The earthquake load for large (>1,000 ton) water reservoirs are further determined using a specification established from the Korean Standards Association. The structural behavior of water reservoirs with differential settlements can be heavily dependent on seismic loading effects. Stress and displacement distributions are induced for various load combinations, including for with and without differential settlements. From numerical examples, the induced maximum displacements of the water reservoirs largely increase with differential settlements compared to those without differential settlements.
Shape memory alloys (SMA) exhibit superelasticity which refers to the capability of entirely recovering large deformation upon removal of applied forces and dissipating input energy during the cyclic loading reversals when the environment is above the austenite finish temperature. This property is increasingly favored by the earthquake engineering community, which is currently developing resilient structures with prompt recovery and affordable repair cost after earthquakes. Compared with the other SMAs, NiTi SMAs are widely deemed as the most promising candidate in earthquake engineering. This paper contributes to evaluate the seismic performance of properly designed concentrically braced frames (CBFs) equipped with NiTi SMA braces under earthquake ground motions corresponding to frequently-occurred, design-basis and maximum-considered earthquakes. An ad hoc seismic design approach that was previously developed for structures with idealized SMAs was introduced to size the building members, by explicitly considering the strain hardening characteristics of NiTi SMA particularly. The design procedure was conducted to compliant with a suite of ground motions associated with the hazard level of design-basis earthquake. A total of four six-story CBFs were designed by setting different ductility demands for SMA braces while designating with a same interstory drift target for the structural systems. The analytical results show that all the designed frames successfully met the prescribed seismic performance objectives, including targeted maximum interstory drift, uniform deformation demand over building height, eliminated residual deformation, controlled floor acceleration, and slight damage in the main frame. In addition, this study indicates that the strain hardening behavior does not necessarily impose undesirable impact on the global seismic performance of CBFs with SMA braces.
In Chinese Design Codes, for super high-rise buildings with complex structural distribution, which are regarded as code-exceeding buildings, elasto-plastic time history analysis is needed to validate the requirement of "no collapse under rare earthquake". In this paper, a 117-story super high-rise building is discussed. It has a height of 597 m and a height-width ratio of 9.5, which have both exceeded the limitations stipulated by the Chinese Design Codes. Mega columns adopted in this structure have cross section area of about $45m^2$ at the bottom, which is infrequent in practical projects. NosaCAD and Perform-3D, both widely used in nonlinear analyses, were chosen in this study, with which two model were established and analyzed, respectively. Elasto-plastic time history analysis was conducted to look into its seismic behavior, emphasizing on the stress state and deformation abilities under intensive seismic excitation. From the comparisons on the results under rare earthquake obtained from NosaCAD and Perform-3D, the overall responses such as roof displacement, inter story drift, base shear and damage pattern of the whole structure from each software show agreement to an extent. Besides, the deformation of the structure is below the limitation of the Chinese Codes, the time sequence and distribution of damages on core tubes are reasonable, and can dissipate certain inputted energy, which indicates that the structure can meet the requirement of "no collapse under rare earthquake".
This paper presents the characteristics behavior of dike structure and foundation ground through the shaking table model test. The vibration loadings of design earthquake acceleration of 0.154g was applied to this laboratory model test regarding on dike structure and foundation ground under the structure. The model was formulated with 1/100 design of representative cross section for evaluating the effectiveness of vibration. Based on the test results, we can analysis the behavior of lateral displacement and settlement characteristics of structure under the earthquake loading. The pore water pressure was also monitored in the upper, middle and lower layers of ground. Finally, the actual displacements and pore water pressure of the structure can be predicted by using the results of the laboratory shaking table test.
