It can be said that rock mass properties are characterized not by a mean value but by values with variation due to its characteristic uncertainty. This characteristic is one of the most important parts for the design of underground structures, but yet to be fully examined. Stochastic finite element method (SFEM) has been developed in order to take the randomness of structural systems into account. Using SFEM, the response variability of structural system can be obtained and it leads probabilistic stability of structure to be analyzed. In this study, displacements response variability of circular opening with hydrostatic stress field are analyzed in terms of rock mass properties having a certain mean and a standard deviation using the SFEM. The analyzed response variability shows that the necessity of probabilistic stability analysis of underground structures using reliable mean value and standard deviation of deformation modulus.
D.C. traction systems can cause stray currents which could adversely affect both the railway concerned and outside installations, when the return circuit is not sufficiently insulated versus earth. As experience for several decades has not shown evident corrosion effects from a.c. traction systems and actual investigations are not completed, stary currents flowing from a d.c. traction system is issued. D.C. traction systems can cause stray currents can be corrosion and subsequent damage of metallic structures, where stray currents leave the metallic structures. There is also the risk of overheating, arcing and fire and subsequent danger to persons and equipment. Any provision employed to control the effects of stray currents be checked, verified and validated. Direct measurement of stray current is difficult and a provision employed to control the effects of stray currents is proposed.
Modern surveying techniques have been progressed to get the absolute position of a single coordinate system at any point on the earth with the advent of the Global Navigation Satellite System and One-stop digital equipment. In addition, as the speed of the railway has been increasingly faster, in determining the location of major facilities including the center of tracks, it is required to the sophisticated precision. The surveying of railway construction has applied the technical supports and procedures in accordance with the current requirements. In this study, the applicable guidelines of surveying on practical issues and alternatives would be examined, analyzed, and presented by using the empirical data of pilot areas in the process of design, construction, and the maintenance of railway.
In this study, an improved modular arch system with the lower arch space composed of a precast arch block and an outrigger was proposed as an underground culvert, and its applicability and structural behaviors were confirmed. This modular arch culvert structure with vertical walls was designed using precast blocks and by adjusting the placement spacing of concrete blocks to the upper part form an arch shape and the lower part form a vertical wall shape, based on previously researched modular arch systems. Owing to the vertical wall of the proposed modular arch system, it is possible to secure a load-carrying capacity and an arch space that can sufficiently resist the earth pressure generated from the backfill soil and loading on the arch system. To verify the structural characteristics, and applicability of the proposed modular precast arch culvert structure, a full-scale modular culvert specimen was fabricated, and a loading test was conducted. By examining its construction process and loading test results, the applicability and constructability of the proposed structure were analyzed along with its structural characteristics. In addition, its the structural predictability and safety for the applicability were evaluated by comparing the construction process and loading test results with the FE analysis results.
Intercomparison among the three radiative transfer models (RTMs) which have been used in the studies for COMS, was carried out on the condition of aerosol-laden atmospheres. Also the role of aerosols in the atmospheric radiation budget was analyzed. The results (hereafter referred to as H15) from Halthore et al.'s study (2005) were used as a benchmark to examine the models. Aerosol Radiative Forcing (ARF) values from the three RTMs, calculated under two conditions of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT=0.08, 0.24), were systematically underestimated in comparison to H15 in the following shortwave components; 1) direct and diffuse irradiance at the surface, 2) diffuse upward fluxes at the surface and the top of the atmosphere, and 3) atmospheric absorbance. The ARF values for the direct and diffuse fluxes at the surface was $-10{\sim}-40Wm^{-2}$. The diffuse upward values became larger with increasing both AOT and Solar Zenith Angle (SZA). Diffuse upward/downward fluxes at the surface were more sensitive to the SZA than to the atmospheric type. The diffuse downward values increased with increasing AOT and decreasing SZA. The larger AOT led to surface cooling by exceeding the reduction of direct irradiance over the enhancement of diffuse one at the surface. The extinction of direct solar irradiance was due mainly to water vapor in tropical atmospheres, and to both ozone and water vapor in subarctic atmospheres. The effect of water vapor in the tropics was $3{\sim}4$ times larger than that of the ozone. The absorbance values from the three RTMs agree with those from H15 within ${\pm}10%$.
The increased brightness and focused X-ray beams now available from laboratory X-ray sources facilitates a variety of powder diffraction experiments not practical using conventional in-house sources. Furthermore, the increased availability of 2-dimensional area detectors, along with implementation of improved software and customized sample environmental cells, makes possible new classes of in-situ and time-resolved diffraction experiments. These include phase transitions under variable pressure- and temperature conditions and ion-exchange reactions. Examples of in-situ and time-resolved studies which are presented here include: (1) time-resolved data to evaluate the kinetics and mechanism of ion exchange in mineral natrolite; (2) in-situ dehydration and thermal expansion behaviors of ion-exchanged natrolite; and (3) observations of the phases forming under controlled hydrostatic pressure conditions in ion-exchanged natrolite. Both the quantity and quality of the in-situ diffraction data are such to allow evaluation of the reaction pathway and Rietveld analysis on selected dataset. These laboratory-based in-situ studies will increase the predictability of the follow-up experiments at more specialized beamlines at the synchrotron.

This study was conducted to classify agro-climatic zones in Northeast district of China. For agro-climatic zoning, monthly mean temperature and precipitation data from Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, USA) between 1979 and 2010 (http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/) were collected. Altitude and vegetation fraction of East Asia from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) were also used to classify them. The criteria of agro-climatic classification were altitude (200 m, between 200-800 m, 800 m), vegetation fraction (60%), annual mean temperature ($0^{\circ}C$), temperature in the hottest month ($22^{\circ}C$), and annual precipitation (700 mm). In Northeast district of China, mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and solar radiation were $3.4^{\circ}C$, 613.2 mm, and $4,414.2MJ/m^2$ between 2009 and 2013, respectively. Twenty-two agro-climatic zones identified in Northeast district of China by metrics classification method, from which the map of agro-climatic zones for Northeast district of China was derived. The results could be useful as information for estimating agro-meteorological characteristics and predicting crop development and crop yield of Northeast district of China as well as those of North Korea.
This study was focused on iron removal from illite by L-ascorbic and oxalic acids. Iron has been shown as a secondary mineral such as iron oxides and hydroxides in illite ores. It is also known as a primary agent to degrade brightness index of the ores. Methods such as physical separation and chemical leaching with strong inorganic acids have been widely used to remove the iron from the ores. However, these methods are expensive and give rise to environmental problems. In this study, we examined an alternative method using solutions with different set of combination of sulfuric, hydrochloric, L-ascorbic, and oxalic acids. Compared to chemical treatments with only inorganic acids, our results demonstrate that an addition of L-ascorbic acid in inorganic acids results in decreasing both total concentrations of the inorganic acids and time for the treatments. The treatment with 0.15 M L-ascorbic acid and 0.25 M sulfuric acid in solution for 60 min significantly improved the brightness index from 42.4% to 74.4%. This improvement is similar to that of treatment with only 2.5 M sulfuric acid alone for 150 min. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were performed to compare the effect of acid leaching on illite powders. No obvious differences are observed in the mineralogical characteristics and particle size distributions of the samples. These results suggest that the treatment with the addition of L-ascorbic acid in sulfuric acid could effectively remove iron without modifying the physicochemical properties of illite under conditions used in this study.

The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a deep-marine gravelly deposit, which is hundreds of meters thick and kilometers wide and extends laterally for more than 100 km, filling the foredeep trough of the Cretaceous Magallanes Basin. For understanding the depositional processes and environments of this gigantic deep-sea conglomerate, detailed analyses on sedimentary facies, architecture and paleoflow patterns were carried out, highlighting the differences between the northern (Lago Pehoe and Lago Goic areas) and southern (Lago Sofia area) parts of the study area. The conglomerate bodies in the northern part occur as relatively thin (< 100 m thick), multiple units intervened by thick mudstone-dominated sequences. They show paleoflows toward ENE and S to SW, displaying a converging drainage pattern. In the southern part, the conglomerate bodies are vertically interconnected and form a thick (> 400 m thick) conglomerate sequence with rare intervening fine-grained deposits. Paleoflows are toward SW. The north-to-south variations are also distinct in sedimentary facies. The conglomerate bodies in the southern part are mainly composed of clast-supported conglomerate with sandy matrix, which is interpreted to be deposited from highly concentrated bedload layers under turbidity currents. Those in the northern part are dominated by matrix- to clast-supported conglomerate with muddy matrix, which is interpreted as the products of composite mass flows comprising a turbidity current, a gravelly hyperconcentrated flow and a mud-rich debris flow. All these characteristics suggest that the Lago Sofia conglomerate was formed in centripetally converging submarine channels, not in centrifugally diverging channels of submarine fans. The tributaries in the north were dominated by mass flows, probably affected by channel-bank failures or basin-marginal slope instability processes. In contrast, the trunk channel in the south was mostly filled by tractive processes, which resulted in the vertical and lateral accretion of gravel bars, deposition of gravel dunes and filling of scours and channels, similar to deposits of terrestrial gravel-bed rivers. The trunk channel developed along the axis of foredeep trough and its confinement within the trough is probably responsible for the thick, interconnected channel fills. The large-scale architecture of the trunk-channel fills shows an eastward offset stacking pattern, suggesting that the channel migrated eastwards most likely due to the uplift of the Andean Cordillera.
The distribution characteristics of some major environmental radionuclides ($^{40}K$, $^{228}Ac$, $^{226}Ra$, $^{222}Rn$) and U in rocks, soils and soil gas were studied at Geumjeong-Gu, Busan, Korea. The activities of radionuclides in granitic rocks are decreased in the odor of $^{40}K$>thorium decay series>uranium decay series. This reveals that Th was relatively more enriched in granitic rocks than U. The U content and activity of $^{226}Ra$ and $^{228}Ac$, however, don't reflect the fractionation sequence of granitic rocks in the study area. The activities of all these radionuclides and U content in soils are generally higher than in rocks, and their distribution in rocks, soils and soil gas show very low co-relationship. These facts indicate that the activities of radionuclides in soil and soil gas were greatly affected by leaching and adsorption properties of the radionuclides and their parents during weathering and pedogenetic process rather than their concentrations in parent rocks.
