  • This paper presents a kinematic limit analysis for passive earth pressure of rigid retaining structures considering the unsaturation of the backfill. Particular emphasis in the current work is focused on the effects of the spatial change in the degree of saturation on the passive earth pressure under different steady-infiltration/evaporation conditions. The incorporation of change of effective unit weight with degree of saturation is the main contribution of this study. The problem is formulated based on the log-spiral failure model rather than the linear wedge failure model, in which both the spatial variations of suction and soil effective unit weight are taken into account. Parametric studies, which cover a wide range of flow conditions, soil types and properties, wall batter, back slope angle as well as the interface friction angle, are performed to investigate the effects of these factors on the passive pressure and the corresponding shape of potential failure surfaces in the backfill. The results reveal that the flow conditions have significant effects on the suction and unit weight of the clayey backfill, and hence greatly impact the passive earth pressure of retaining structures. It is expected that present study could provide an insight into evaluation of the passive earth pressure of retaining structures with unsaturated backfills.

  • The reduction and diffusion process(R-D process) is an economical way to produce the functional materials which contain rare-earth elements and has been applied to the production of rare-earth magnet meterials($SmCo_5$, $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$), magneto-optical(MO) target materials and hydrogen storage alloy, etc. However, because of difficult to control of the final composition, the R-D process has not been applied to production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent magnet materials which contain several elements. Therefore, this work was as a basic study for the production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent materials with composition $Sm(Co_{0.72}Fe_{0.21}Cu_{0.05}Zr_{0.03})_{7.9}$ by the R-D process, the following were mainy examined ; the amount of metallic calcium as a reductant, homogenization condition of the alloy after the R-D reaction, masuring of magnetic properties of the sample after step aging. The sample prepared by the R-D process contained a little more oxygen than that prepared by the melting method, however, showed almost the same magnetic properties.

  • The objective of the project is to model and study the geomagnetic field structure and its secular variation in space and in time due to sources in the dynamic fluid outer core. the Earth's spherical harmonic model of the main field and of the secular variation gives the intensity and geomagnetic structure at any location around the Earth, assuming an undistorted, steady state field that no external sources or localized earth anomalies. To consider the practical use of a ship's digital compass in Earth's magnetic field, Earth's spherical harmonic model is searched for the related practical methods and procedures as a basic study in this work.

  • This study investigated that internalized images of earth scientist's work of 110 high school students who complete a course in Earth Science I through drawing. As a result that reflected the character of earth science as a school subject, it is shown that nearly half of the students believe that earth scientist's working place is outside. An object of study is limited to such areas as astronomy and geology, it says that students has little understanding of areas of atmospheric and oceanic sciences. There are lots of answers that tools for working are telescope or microscope, it reveals a huge difference between the results of advanced research that analyzed the typical experimental devices, and students realized that working is not invention but survey. We should try students to recognize earth scientist as a job with relation to their future.

  • After Kyoto Protocol was adopted for green gas reduction, each nations are stepping up efforts to reduce $CO_2$ of a typical green gas. Construction industry also is trying $CO_2$ reduction with the techniques of two types which are software and hardware techniques. The software technique are Passive Design considered green gas emission and the environment impact assessment by LCA. The hardware techniques are adjustment of equipment system and development of eco- friendly material. But, it is nonexistent that a study related to $CO_2$ emission considered detail process in construction industry. This study analyzed the relativeness of equipment combination and $CO_2$ emission by calculate $CO_2$ emission follow to equipment combination on earth-work which is the process emitted most $CO_2$ among railway bedding construction.

  • The environment and the ecologic balance of the earth had been destructed by both man and ecological catastrophes and are no longer sustainable. We have no future unless we conserve our natural resourses and make efforts to change our basic patterns of consuming, production and recycling. Our earth had been contaminated without our recognition. We became indifferent to environmental problems and even more we hve lost our interest completely. To overcome this period of crisis, the concept of 'green imperative'has emerged. Since design powerfully influences our lives and the environment for good or ill, those at the forefront of design to consumers and the end-users can contribute to the well-being of the people and planet through new awareness of environmental and ecological based design. The spiritual awareness of green design will enrich the work of design through lasting performance of continuty and will make the future work.

  • The OGS model is configured and used for simulation of the LASGIT project. The modeling conditions and the simulation results from the previous work by Walsh and Calder (2009) are analyzed to see if the simulation configuration is done correctly and to apply for the LASGIT project. Except for the unrealistic modeling conditions used previously, the simulation results successfully demonstrated helium propagation that is typical for the two-phase flow. The results indicated that the relations of capillary pressure and the relative permeability against water saturation used previously should be updated. An elaborated simulation with more realistic parameters should be used to improve the weak points of preliminary work.

  • Earthmoving equipment's haul-route has a great influence on the productivity of the earth work operation. Haul-route grade is a critical factor in selecting the haul-route. The route that has low grade resistance contributes to increase machine travel speed and production. This study presents a mathematical model called "Hauling-Unit Optimal Routes Selecting system" (HUORS). The system identifies optimal path that maximize the earth-work productivity. It consists of 3 modules, i.e., (1) Module 1 which inputs site characteristic data and computes site location and elevation using GIS(Geographical Information System); (2) Module 2 which calculates haul time; (3) Module 3 which displays an optimum haul-route by considering the haul-route's gradient resistances (i.e., from the departure to the destination) and hauling time. This paper presents the system prototype in detail. A case study is presented to demonstrate the system and verifies the validity of the model.
