  • This paper presents an experimental technique to accurately separate a permanent magnetic field and an induced one from the total magnetic fields generated by a steel ship, through compensating for the Earth's magnetic field. To achieve this, an Earth's magnetic field simulator was constructed at a non-magnetic laboratory, and the field separation technique was developed, which consisted of five stages. The proposed method was tested with a scaled model ship, and its permanent and induced magnetic fields were successfully extracted from the magnetic field created by the ship. Finally, based on the separated permanent magnetic field data, the permanent magnetization distribution on the hull was predicted by solving an inverse problem. Accordingly, the permanent magnetic fields generated by the ship can easily be calculated at any depth of water.

  • We study the stability of the magnetic structure in active region (AR) 12371 producing an M6.5 flare on June 22 2015. We first perform a nonlinear force-free fields (NLFFFs) extrapolation to derive three-dimensional (3D) magnetic fields based on time series of observed photospheric magnetic fields. The NLFFFs well describe an observed sigmoidal structure with the shape of a double arc magnetic configuration. Next, we examine three possible instabilities (kink, torus, and double arc) to investigate how the M6.5 flare is triggered in the double arc loops. Consequently, the double arc loops are stable against kink and torus instabilities, but possibly unstable against the double arc instability before the flare occurrence. Finally, we discuss a probable scenario for the M6.5 flare.

  • We investigate two abnormal CME-Storm pairs that occurred on 2014 September 10 - 12 and 2015 March 15 - 17, respectively. The first one was a moderate geomagnetic storm ($Dst_{min}{\sim}-75nT$) driven by the X1.6 high speed flare-associated CME ($1267km\;s^{-1}$) in AR 12158 (N14E02) near solar disk center. The other was a very intense geomagnetic storm ($Dst_{min}{\sim}-223nT$) caused by a CME with moderate speed ($719km\;s^{-1}$) and associated with a filament eruption accompanied by a weak flare (C9.1) in AR 12297 (S17W38). Both CMEs have large direction parameters facing the Earth and southward magnetic field orientation in their solar source region. In this study, we inspect the structure of Interplanetary Flux Ropes (IFRs) at the Earth estimated by using the torus fitting technique assuming self-similar expansion. As results, we find that the moderate storm on 2014 September 12 was caused by small-scale southward magnetic fields in the sheath region ahead of the IFR. The Earth traversed the portion of the IFR where only the northward fields are observed. Meanwhile, in case of the 2015 March 17 storm, our IFR analysis revealed that the Earth passed the very portion where only the southward magnetic fields are observed throughout the passage. The resultant southward magnetic field with long-duration is the main cause of the intense storm. We suggest that 3D magnetic field geometry of an IFR at the IFR-Earth encounter is important and the strength of a geomagnetic storm is strongly affected by the relative location of the Earth with respect to the IFR structure.

  • All the plants on earth live under an electric and magnetic field because the earth is a magnet and there is an electric field between the charged cloud and the ground. It has been reported that electromagnetic fields influence both the activation of ions and polarization of dipoles in living cells of seeds and plants, though the mechanism of these actions is still poorly understood. In this paper, the effects of the electric and magnetic fields and exposure times to the germination of several vegetable seeds and its early growth have been investigated experimentally to find out the feasibility of a plant factory for mass production of clean and unpolluted vegetables. The germination rate and the growth rate of some seeds under the fields exposed were analysed and compared with those of unexposed ones. It is found that the germination rate and its early growth rate of exposed seeds under the fields were accelerated about 1.1-1.4 and 1.7-2.2 times in maximum compared with those of unexposed ones. But, however, an inhibitory effect on germination and plant early growth were shown in the case of the higher electric and magnetic fields.

  • In this paper, measurement and analysis of ELF electric and magnetic fields in the vicinity of 22.9[kV] distribution line have been performed. The height of measuring point from the earth's surface was 1[m], and the distance between the device and the operator was more than 3[m]. The experiments have been carried out by lateral profile, and we have made use of FIELDS program for the sake of comparision the experimental data with the theoretical value. Electric and magnetic fields intensity were strong under a distribution line, and were inversely proportional to lateral distance. The profiles of electric field were M shape and those of magnetic field were $\cap$ shape. Electric and magnetic fields intensity were increased with increasing the measurement height.

  • Demagnetization for a tube sample which was made of a galvanized steel sheet was performed by applying a magnetic field with a decrement to remove the remanent magnetization of the material. An orthogonal fluxgate magnetic field sensor was used to measure a magnetic field created from a ferromagnetic material. To evaluate the remanent magnetization, the measured magnetic fields were separated into two magnetic field components by the remnant magnetization and the induced one. The horizontal and the vertical bias fields should be controlled separately during demagnetization to remove the horizontal and the vertical components of the remanent magnetization of the tube sample.

  • The Earth's magnetic field acquired from KOMPSAT-1's TAM (Three-Axis Magnetometer) between June 19th and 21st 2000 was analyzed. The TAM, one of the KOMPSAT-1's Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystems, plays an important role in determining and controlling the satellite's attitude. This also can provide new insight on the Earth's magnetic field. By transforming the satellite coordinate from ECI to ECEF, spherical coordinate of total magnetic field was achieved. These data were grouped into dusk (ascending) and dawn (descending) data sets, based on their local magnetic times. This partitioning is essential for performing 1-D WCA (Wavenumber Correlation Analysis). Also, this enhances the perception of external fields in the Kompsat-1's TAM magnetic maps that were compiled according to different local. The dusk and dawn data are processed independently and then merged to produce a total field magnetic anomaly map. To extract static and dynamic components, the 1-D and 2-D WCAs were applied to the sub-parallel neighboring tracks and dawn-dusk data sets. The static components were compared with the IGRF, the global spherical harmonic magnetic field model. The static and dynamic components were analyzed in terms of corefield, external, and crustal signals based on their origins.

  • It is realized that the extraterrestrial matter is in ionized state, plasma, so the matter of this kind behaves as not expected because of its sensitiveness to electric and magnetic fields and its ability to carry electric currents. This kind of subtle change can be observed by an instrument for the magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer usually mounted on the rocket and the satellite, and based on the ground observatory. The magnetometer is a useful instrument for the spacecraft attitude control and the Earth's magnetic field measurements for the scientific purpose. In this paper, we present the preliminary design and the test results of the two onboard magnetometers of KARl's (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) sounding rocket, KSRIII, which will be launched during the period of 2001-02. The KSR-III magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer, MAG/AIM (Attitude Information Magnetometer) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and of the search-coil magnetometer, MAG/SIM (Scientific Investigation Magnetometer) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations. With the MAG/AIM, the 3-axis attitude information can be acquired by the comparison of the resulting dc magnetic vector fields with the IGRF (International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The Earth's magnetic field fluctuations ranging from 10 to 1,000 Hz can also be observed with the MAG/SIM measurement.
