  • Earth resistivity and changing of grounding electrode's shape are very important factor to reduce grounding resistance. Earth resistivity has different values according to property of soil and is effected by temperature, climate, and environment. This Paper describes the effect of the grounding resistance according to the grounding type such as driven rod, counterpoise grounding and mesh grounding. And also grounding resistance values with earth resistivity and shape of grounding electrode were represented in this paper.

  • In Thailand, the electricity consumption is very high with the intention of reduce high temperature in the building. Since 2000, a lot of people paying attention to Green-Building concept. A similar concept is natural building, which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally. Therefore, the Earth-Block (EAB) product is appropriated approach to reduce energy consumption in the buildings. The EAB is produced with environmentally friendly process, which does not release harmful pollution and effective cost. The main significant character is durable materials for building construction. This study aims to develop the new thermal insulation by using soil-cement with vetiver grass fibre. Additionally, it describes the innovative systems used in production of EAB materials by mixing the soil-cement with vetiver grass fibre. This paper reveals lowest costs, space configurations changing and greater design flexibility for constructing the building.

Drive-by bridge inspection from three different approaches

  • This study presents a vibration-based health monitoring strategy for short span bridges utilizing an inspection vehicle. How to screen the health condition of short span bridges in terms of a drive-by bridge inspection is described. Feasibility of the drive-by bridge inspection is investigated through a scaled laboratory moving vehicle experiment. The feasibility of using an instrumented vehicle to detect the natural frequency and changes in structural damping of a model bridge was observed. Observations also demonstrated the possibility of diagnosis of bridges by comparing patterns of identified bridge dynamic parameters through periodical monitoring. It was confirmed that the moving vehicle method identifies the damage location and severity well.

Variability in bridge frequency induced by a parked vehicle

  • The natural frequency of a bridge is an important parameter in many engineering applications such as bridge seismic design and modal-based bridge health monitoring. The natural frequency of a bridge vibrating alone may differ from that vibrating along with a vehicle. Although such vehicle-induced variability in bridge frequency is revealed in several experimental and numerical simulation studies, few attempts have been made on the theoretical descriptions. In this study, both theoretically and experimentally, the variability in the bridge frequency induced by a parked vehicle is verified, and is therefore suggested to be considered in bridge-related engineering, especially for those cases with near vehicle-bridge resonance conditions or with large vehicle-to-bridge mass ratios. Moreover, the variability ranges could be estimated by an analytical formula presented herein.

Global Star Formation Efficiency of Local Galaxies

  • This study presents the global star formation efficiency (SFE) of 272 local star-forming galaxies based on the HI gas mass, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and morphology. The SFE increases as the stellar mass increases while the specific SFR decreases. The SFE is enhanced for galaxies with large H$\acute{a}$ equivalent widths, which is primarily due to the large SFR, not due to the large available amount of gas. The SFE is also enhanced by a factor of ~2 for merging systems compared to the normal spirals, showing that the merger-induced high pressure and density environment are crucial for the active star formation. Based on the SFR scaling relation, I present a SFR calibration formula using the HI gas mass.

Launch Site Activities for the Launch of an Earth Observation Satellite

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed an earth observation satellite whose primary mission objective is to provide high resolution electro optical earth images for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) establishment and the applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring. It was successfully launched into its mission orbit by using a commercial launch vehicle on 18th of May, 2012. This paper describes a series of launch activity at the launch site including its transportation to the launch site. Before conducting the launch site operation, satellite operation plane was prepared. Combining the satellite operation plan and launch vehicle activities, an integrated launch site operation plan and schedule have been drawn up. After arrival of the spacecraft at the launch site, post-ship check out has been conducted. And then it was fuel loaded and integrated with launch vehicle hardware. After completion of final electrical check out, count down procedure was executed. on 18th of May, it was launched into the space and was separated from the launch vehicle as planned. About 3 months of early operation and calibration/validation, now the satellite is conducting its normal mission.

Simulation and Design of Optimized Three-Layer Radiation Shielding to Protect Electronic Boards of Satellite Revolving in Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) Orbit against Proton Beams

  • The safety of electronic components used in aerospace systems against cosmic rays is one of the most important requirements in their design and construction (especially satellites). In this work, by calculating the dose caused by proton beams in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) orbit using the MCNPX Monte Carlo code and the MULLASSIS code, the effect of different structures in the protection of cosmic rays has been evaluated. A multi-layer radiation shield composed of aluminum, water and polyethylene was designed and its performance was compared with shielding made of aluminum alone. The results show that the absorbed dose by the simulated protective layers has increased by 35.3% and 44.1% for two-layer (aluminum, polyethylene) and three-layer (aluminum, water, polyethylene) protection respectively, and it is effective in the protection of electronic components. In addition to that, by replacing the multi-layer shield instead of the conventional aluminum shield, the mass reduction percentage will be 38.88 and 39.69, respectively, for the two-layer and three-layer shield compared to the aluminum shield.

  • The Yeosu Sado dinosaur tracksite is well known for many dinosaur tracks and research on the gregarious behavior of dinosaurs. In addition, various geological and geographical heritage sites are distributed on Sado Island. However, educational field trips for students are very limited due to accessibility according to its geological location, time constraints due to tides, and continuous weathering and damage. Therefore, this study aims to generate 3D models and images of dinosaur tracks using the photogrammetric method, which has recently been used in various fields, and then discuss the possibility of using them as paleontological research and educational contents. As a result of checking the obtained 3D images and models, it was possible to confirm the existence of footprints that were not previously discovered or could not represent details by naked eyes or photos. Even previously discovered tracks could possibly present details using 3D images that could not be expressed by photos or interpretive drawings. In addition, the 3D model of dinosaur tracks can be preserved as semi-permanent data, enabling various forms of utilization and preservation. Here we apply 3D printing and mobile augmented reality content using photogrammetric 3D models for a virtual field trip, and these models acquired by photogrammetry can be used in various educational content fields that require 3D models.

  • This paper is analysed by switching overvoltage on operating reclosing in 154 [kV] combined transmission systems. Combined transmission systems are modeled by EMTP/ATPDraw program. It is fault condition that simulate high resistance earth fault. The simulation is carried out considering variation of parameters such as resistance value of fault point and rate of underground line.
