  • This study analyzed the distribution of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Version 3 Level 2.0 data, spanning over two decades, across South Korea and its six administrative regions (Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gangwon, Gyeongsang, and Jeju). The research assessed long-term trends in aerosol optical depth (AOD) and mass concentration of particulate matter (i.e., PM10 and PM2.5), using data from the AERONET direct sun product and AirKorea, respectively. Additionally, eight aerosol types were identified using the scattering Ångström exponent and absorption Ångström exponent from the AERONET inversion product. The study further explored their domestic and regional distributions. Findings indicated that AERONET data were predominantly concentrated in the western regions of South Korea, including the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, and Jeolla, with a higher frequency of data in spring, thus demonstrating spatial and temporal heterogeneity. The annual average AOD exhibited a declining trend of -0.006 yr-1. Similarly, PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations decreased by -1.324 ㎍ m-3 yr-1 and -1.335 ㎍ m-3 yr-1, respectively. These trends in AOD and PM10 (PM2.5) demonstrated positive correlations, with correlation coefficients of 0.674 (0.753) and statistically significant low p-values of 0.00058 (0.03), respectively. The analysis also revealed that aerosols in South Korea predominantly consisted of black carbon (BC) or BC-mixed types (84.09%), with a notable presence of smaller, less absorbent aerosol types (13.11%).

  • A gravity meter has been used for exploring subsurface mineral resources and monitoring long-period events such as Earth tides. Recently, researchers found several other intriguing features that we could even detect large teleseismic earthquakes and monitor seismic ambient noise using gravimeters. The zero-length spring suspension technology gives the gPhone (Micro-g LaCoste) excellent low frequency sensitivity, which may have implications for investigating much longer-period natural events (e.g., Earth's hum, tsunami waves, etc.). In this study, we present preliminary results through temporary operation of the gPhone at Geumsan in South Korea for 9 months (Nov. 2008-Jul. 2009). The gPhone successfully recorded large teleseismic events and showed a clear seasonal variation of the Double frequency microseisms during its operation period.

  • This paper formulates a yaw angle determination algorithm for earth-point satellite. The algorithm based on vector observation, is implemented with the limited vector measurements. The proposed algorithm doesn't require gyro measurement data but magnetic sensor measurement data. In order to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, we investigate the simulated telemetry data of the KOMPSAT-2, a satellite that is scheduled to be launched into a 685km altitude sun synchronous circular orbit in 2005.

  • This paper considers the problem of satellite's orbit control and a solution based in Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) is proposed for the case of Low Earth Orbiters (LEO). In particular, the modelling procedure and the algorithm for control law synthesis are tested using as study case the European Gravity Field and Ocean Circulation Explorer satellite (GOCE), to be launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in the year 2006. The scientific objective of this space mission is the recovering of the Earth gravity field with high accuracy (less than 10${\mu}m$/${\mu}m$) and spatial resolution (better than 100km). In order to meet these scientific requirements, the orbit control must guarantee stringent specifications in terms of environmental disturbances attenuation (atmospheric drag forces) even in presence of high levels of model uncertainty.

  • Arsenic is a toxic and carcinogenic metalloid, whose sources in nature include mineral dissolution and volcanic eruption. Abandoned mines and hazardous waste disposal sites are another major source of arsenic contamination of soil and aquatic systems. To predict concentrations of the toxic inorganic arsenic in aqueous phase. the biogeochemical redox processes and transport behavior need to be studied together and be coupled in a reactive transport model. A new reaction module describing the fate and transport of inorganic arsenic species (As(II)), dissolved oxygen, nitrate, ferrous iron, sulfate, and dissolved organic carbon are developed and incorporated into the RT3D code.

  • In this study the attitude control of the KOREASAT is investigated. The KOREASAT is a geostationary satellite and its 3 attitude angles, namely, roll, pitch and yaw angles, are stabilized by using the 3-axis stabilization technique. In the pitch control loop, the pitch attitude angle received from the earth sensor is processed in the attitude processing electronics by using PI type control logic, and the control command is sent to the momentum wheel assembly to generate the control torque by varying the wheel rate. The roll/yaw attitude control is performed by activating a magnetic torquer or by firing appropriate thrusters. The magnetic torquer interacts with the earth magnetic field to produce the control torque, and the thrusters are used to control the larger roll attitude errors. In this study dynamic modelling of the satellite is performed. And the earth sensor, the momentum wheel, and the magnetic torquer are mathematically modelled. The 3-axis attitude control logic is implemented to make the closed-loop system and simulations are carried out to verify the implemented control laws.

  • This study presents a simulation of the traction return current based on $2{\times}25kV$ power supply system in order to determine the impedance bond intensity of impulse type track circuit on the electrified Gyeongbu line. The results of the simulation enables us to measure the precise intensity of catenary current that returns to the substation through KTX (Korean Train Express) operated by $2{\times}25kV$ power supply system with common earth network. The combination of $2{\times}25kV$ and common earth network established on the electrified Gyeongbu line for the first time in Korea. We show that the relationships among the traction return current, earth current, and catenary current, and catenary current can be applied to this line in order to determine the optimal impedance bond intensity ...

  • For satellite orbit determination, a satellite (K-3H) which is affected by the earth's gravitational field and the earth's atmospheric drag, the sun, and the moon is chosen as a dynamic model. The state vector include orbit parameters, uncertain parameters associated with perturbations and tracking stations. These perturbations include gravitational constant, atmospheric drag, and jonal harmonics due to the earth nonsphericity. Early orbit was obtained with given the predicted orbital parameter of the satellite. And orbit determination, which is applied to Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) for real time implementation , use the observation data which is given by satellite tracking radar system and then orbit estimation is accomplished. As a result, extended sequential estimation algorithm has a fast convergence and also indicate effectiveness for real time operation.

  • The mission of the EO(electro-optical) based low earth orbit satellite is provision of the high-resolution images required for GIS(Geographical Information Systems) establishment and the applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring. AEISS(Advanced Earth Imaging Sensor System) which is the main payload on the satellite consists of EOS(electro-optical subsystem) and PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Sub-system). IDHU(Image Data Handling Unit) which is one of the major unit in PDTS is capable of compression, storage, encryption and encoding. In this paper, the payload system of the EO based satellite is briefly introduced and the influence of the compression on AEISS is analyzed.

  • In this paper, we investigate the grounding installation using grounding electrode into the earth in order to protect the power transmission line and transmission system and to improve the reliability of operations. Grounding electrode into the earth that has small grounding resistance is found to be very cost effective compare to other electrode systems by the ease of installation and making the earth damage small.
