  • The In this paper, we have made numerical experiments to compare 2D image reconstruction algorithm of earth model by electrical resistance tomograpy (ERT). Gauss-Newton, simultaneous iterative reconstruction technieque (SIRT) and truncated least squares (TLS) approaches for Wenner and Schlumberger electrode arrays are presented for the solution of the ERT image reconstruction. Computer simulations show that the Gauss-Newton and TLS approach in ERT are proper for 2D image reconstruction of an earth model.

  • Effects of rare earth metals addition and aging treatment on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of super duplex stainless steels were investigated using optical/SEM/TEM metallographic examination, an X-ray diffraction test, a potentiodynamic anodic polarization test and a tensile test. The performance of the experimental alloy with 0.32% REM addition was compared with commercial super duplex stainless steel such as SAF 2507 when they were exposed to solution annealing heat treatment and aging treatment. The corrosion resistance in CF environments and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy were found superior to those of the commercial duplex stainless steel. The REM with larger atomic radii than those of Cr, Mo and W may fill vacancies inside the matrix and around the grain boundaries, retarding formation of harmful intermetallic σ and χ phases. In addition, fine REM oxides/oxy-sulfides (1-3㎛) seemed to enhance the retardation effects. With REM additions, strength and ductility increased due to the phase and grain refinement caused by fine REM oxides and oxy-sulfides.

  • In this study, we have investigated new plasma resistant materials with less usage of rare-earth oxides than $Y_2O_3$ which is currently used in the semiconductor industry. We observed the stability ranges of $(Gd{\cdot}Y)_3Al_5O_{12}$ and $(La{\cdot}Y)Al_{11}O_{18}$ ternary systems, and measured their etch rates under typical fluorine plasma. $(Gd{\cdot}Y)_3Al_5O_{12}$ system showed an extensive solid solution up to 80 mol% gadolinium, but $(La{\cdot}Y)Al_{11}O_{18}$ showed a negligible substitution between rare-earth ions, which can be explained by the differences between the ionic radii. The etch rates depended on the total amount of rare-earth oxides but not on the substitution of the rare-earth ions. When the specimen was examined using XPS after the exposure to fluorine plasma, the strong surface fluorination was observed with a shift of the binding energy to higher energy.

  • This paper represents the design of the ground resistance measuring system insensitive to the noise in the earth. Generally, conventional ground resistance measuring instruments may fail to give a precise values for ground resistance under the situations where there is a high ground potential produced by unbalanced power system currents, haromonic currents and noise etc. To make up the defect of conventional ground resistance measuring instruments, in this paper the ground resistance measuring system using high-performance L-C resonant filter and digital signal processor is designed and the insentivity of the designed ground resistance measuring system for noise in the earth is verified by field test on power service and off power service.

  • Marston (1913) and Spangler's (1982) theory was widely used in the analysis of the earth pressure of the narrow and long excavated ditch type backfield ground. Their theory was more clearly explained by expressing the minor principle stress arch connecting the minor principle stress link induced by interaction between the excavated wall surface and the backfilled earth. which was done by R.L. Handy(1985). Later C.G. Kellogg(1993) extended the study from vertical symmetric to incline symmetric in the backfill space type research. In the C.G. Kellogg's study, it is assumed that the resistance of wall friction on the sloping wall could be replaced by the internal friction angle in the sloping section bottom. In the study, the resistance of wall friction in the sloping section bottom, which was applied by C.G. Kellogg, would be different in magnitude with the resistance of wall friction in sloping section. The magnitude is expected to affect in the earth pressure calculation and verified by the soil test box, the C.G. Kellogg's theory, the numerical analysis and the modified C.G. Kellogg's theory considering the friction resistance to influence the incline wall.

  • The safety of a structure can be improved by applying the three dimensional passive earth pressure. Because the three dimensional passive earth pressure is much larger than the two dimensional passive earth pressure and it is determined by the size(width B and height H) and the wall frictional angle of the resistant wall. Therefore, the three dimensional passive resistance behavior was studied through the model tests in sandy ground, where the size of the resistant wall and the wall frictional angle were varied. The results show that three dimensional passive earth pressure is 1.1∼3.4 times larger than that of the two dimensional value depending on the wall size and the wall friction.

  • This study performed an experiment for the danger of an electric shock in the human body, which is directly touched or approached to the exposure of buried metals in a leak caused by certain ground faults at a buried cable in street lamp. In the results of the experiment, the dangerous of electric shocks due to the earth specific resistance and wet and submersion of the earth surface represents a high level as the human body is directly touched to the buried metal at a leak point. In addition, it can be seen that the safety of the human body is influenced by the earth specific resistance, separated distance from buried metals, and shape of buried metals at around the leak point.

  • In this paper, we investigate the grounding installation using grounding electrode into the earth in order to protect the power transmission line and transmission system and to improve the reliability of operations. Grounding electrode into the earth that has small grounding resistance is found to be very cost effective compare to other electrode systems by the ease of installation and making the earth damage small.
