Growth and Bulb Characteristics of Extremely Early-Maturing Onion by Air Temperature Variation at Different Altitudes (해발고도별 기온변화에 따른 극조생 양파의 생육 및 구특성)

  • A study was carried out to determine the influence of climatic environments on the growth characteristics and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing type onion grown at different altitudes, such as 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m above sea level (ASL). The mean air temperature during the growing season of extremely early-maturing type onion (October 18 to April 27) was $10.8^{\circ}C$, $9.6^{\circ}C$, $8.1^{\circ}C$ and $6.1^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m ASL. The mean air temperature during the bulb growth period (March 16 to April 14) was recorded $10.5^{\circ}C$, $9.4^{\circ}C$, $7.9^{\circ}C$ and $6.0^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700 m ASL. Plant height, neck diameter, leaf number, leaf area, top fresh weight and top dry weight were significantly increased in growing of extremely early-maturing type onion at 60m ASL. Bulb/neck diameter ratio increased rapidly under the same temperature regime. The diameter and weight of the bulb were also the largest at 60m ASL during the bulb growth period (daily mean temperature of $12.5^{\circ}C$). At 60m ASL, there was the highest bulb size like a height, diameter and weight of bulb related directly on onion yield in the bulb growth period from March 16 to April 14. In contrast, yield and bulb quality were considerably decreased at 700m ASL during the bulb growth stage (daily mean temperature of $8.4^{\circ}C$). The quantity of extremely early-maturing type onion has gradually decreased as the daily average temperature drops below $12.5^{\circ}C$ during the bulb growth stage (March 16 to April 14). As a result, the lower temperature (daily mean temperature below $12.5^{\circ}C$) during the bulb growth stage significantly decreased the size and quantity of bulb in direction proportion.

Effect of Parity and Season of Calving on Service Period in Nili Ravi Buffalo in Pakistan

  • The study was based on 1921 service period records of Nili Ravi buffaloes maintained at six dairy farms in Pakistan during the period 1978 to 1994. The mean service period was $237.57{\pm}4.5$ days in the over all data. The highest mean service period ($393.59{\pm}16.18$ days) was at MDF Rawalpindi and the lowest ($199.15{\pm}14.35$ days) was at MDF Peshawar. The difference was significant p<0.001. Late maturing buffaloes showed significantly longer service period as compared to early maturing buffaloes. Parity and seasonal effects on Service Period were studied. There was an overall trend of reduction in the length of service period with the increase in parity. The mean ($287.54{\pm}6.89$ days) service period was (highest) in parity number one and lowest in parity number eight ($107.95{\pm}19.72$ days). The difference was highly significant. In overall data significantly lower service periods were seen in buffaloes calving in spring+winter as compared to summer+fall.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigated the characteristics of grain appearance, chemical components. gelatinization, and palatability of cooked rice on each rachis branches as harvested from the transplanting plot of May 20 and June 5 in each two varieties of early-maturing and late-maturing types. In evaluation of rachis branches, the percentage of ripended grain and 1,000 grain weight were found to be high and heavy at upper part of panicle. The factors influencing palatability such as maximum viscosity and breakdown as gelatinization characteristics, and hardness, apringiness, cohesiveness and chewiness as texture characteristics of cooked rice were found to be high at upper part of panicle , indicating the parlability was favored more at upper part than at lower part of panicle due to the genetics and physiological metabolism of rice plants.

Layered model of aging concrete. General concept and one-dimensional applications

  • A novel approach to modeling concrete behavior at the stage of its maturing is presented in this paper. This approach assumes that at any point in the structure, concrete is composed of a set of layers that are activated in time layer by layer, based on amount of released heat that is produced during process of the concrete's maturing. This allows one to assume that each newly created layer has nominal stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strengths. Hence introduction of explicit stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strength dependencies on time, or equivalent time state parameter, is not needed. Analysis of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) structures, especially massive ones, subjected to any kind of straining in their early stage of existence, mostly due to external loads but especially by thermal loading and shrinkage, is the goal of the approach. In this article a simple elasto-plastic softening model with creep is used for each layer and a general layered model behavior is illustrated on one-dimensional (1D) examples.

The Effects of Transplanting Time and Meteorological Change to Variation of Phyllochron of Rice

  • This study was performed at Rice and Winter Cereal Crops Department of NICS during 2007 and 2008 to investigate the characteristics of rice leaf emergence and to obtain basic data which can be used for rice growth simulation model by which we can forecast rice growth stage and heading date accurately under different cultivars, transplanting date, and climatic conditions. To confirm leaf emergence rate according to rice maturing ecotype, we surveyed the leaf emergence rate and heading date of Unkwangbyeo, Hwayoungbyeo and Nampyeongbyeo which are early maturing, medium maturing and medium-late maturing cultivars, respectively, according to seedling raising duration and transplanting time. When seedling duration was 15 days, the growth duration between transplanting time and completion of flag leaf emergence on main culm were 51.5~78.3 days in Unkwangbyeo, 55.3~87.9 days in Hwayoungbyeo and 58.4~98.4 days in Nampyeongbyeo, respectively. When seedling duration was 30 days, they were 50.1~75.5 days in Unkwangbyeo, 52.4~84.7 days in Hwayoungbyeo and 56.4~93.8 days in Nampyeongbyeo, respectively. As transplanting time delayed, the emerged leaf number after transplanting decreased in all rice cultivars. The cumulative temperature between transplanting time to completion of flag leaf elongation on main culm were $1,281^{\circ}C{\sim}1,650^{\circ}C$ in Unkwangbyeo, $1,344^{\circ}C{\sim}1,891^{\circ}C$ in Hwayoungbyeo and $1,454^{\circ}C{\sim}2,173^{\circ}C$ in Nampyeongbyeo, respectively. Leaf emergence rate on main culm were precisely represented by equation, y = $y_0$ + a / [1 + exp( - (x - $x_0$) / b)]^c, when we used daily mean temperature as variable.

Studies on the Change in Chemical Composition of Strawberry during Maturing (딸기 성숙 과정중의 성분변화에 관한 연구)

  • Three types of Korean strawberries, Gardian cultivated in vinyl house, Gardian cultivated on the field and Bogyo, at early variety, on the field were harvested after $10{\sim}34$ days from falling of flowers to investigate the chemical changes of fruits during maturing. The initial pH range after 10 days from falling of flowers was $4.13{\sim}4.28$, which was decreased to $3.40{\sim}3.49$ with maturing. The total acid was steadily increased for 26 days and then decreased thereafter. Vitamin C, not detected until 14 days, was gradually increased to $15.83{\sim}24.90mg%$ in 34 days. Reducing sugar content was increased for 24 days and then decreased, while total sugar, glucose and fructose were generally increased during maturing. Xylose was detected a little. For minerals, potassium was measured the highest value, followed by magnessium, and sodium. A trace amount of manganese, zinc and copper were detected. The strawberries had the content range of $6.00{\sim}24.60mg%$ of methyl alcohol and $6.00{\sim}24.40mg%$ of ethyl alcohol.

A Very Early-Maturing Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) New Variety, 'Greenfarm3ho' (이탈리안 라이그라스 신품종 '그린팜 3호'의 생육특성과 수량성)

  • This experiment was carried out to breed a very early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea from 2012 to 2014. New variety "Greenfarm3ho" is a diploid variety with a green leaf color, a semi-erect growth habit in late autumn/fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of April 27, Greenfarm3ho was categorized as an early-maturing variety. Compared with the "Greenfarm" control variety, Greenfarm3ho's flag-leaf width was narrower by 0.5 mm, its flag-leaf length was longer by 4.4 cm, and its plant length was longer by 3 cm; additionally, Greenfarm3ho's stem thickness was 0.1 mm thicker and it showed winter hardiness. The dry matter (DM) yield (8,976 kg/ha) of Greenfarm3ho was similar to that of Greenfarm. The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), total digestible nutrient (TDN), and crude protein (CP) of Greenfarm3ho were 70.0%, 64.1%, and 1.0%, respectively, which are higher than those of Greenfarm by 2.9%, 2.0%, and 1.4%, respectively. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of Greenfarm3ho were 31.4% and 53.3%, respectively, which are lower than those of Greenfarm by 2.5% and 3.0%, respectively.

'Green farm' was also wider by 0.4 mm in flag leaf width, longer by 0.8 cm in flag leaf length and shorter by 5 cm in plant height than those of control variety, 'Florida 80', respectively. 'Green farm' was thicker in stem thickness and stronger in winter hardness than those of the 'Florida 80'. Dry matter (DM) yield (11,790 kg/ha) of 'Green farm' was similar to that of 'Florida 80'. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), total digestible nutrient (TDN) and crude protein (CP) of 'Green farm' were 68.7, 63.3 and 10.3% which are 1.9, 1.7 and 0.6% higher than those of 'Florida 80', respectively. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green farm' were 32.5 and 54.6% which are 2.2 and 4.3% lower than those of the 'Florida 80', respectively.

Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 'Green farm II' were 31.7% and 52.6% which were 3.5% and 6.4% lower than those of 'Florida 80', respectively.

Growth Characteristics and Yield of a New Italian Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.) Variety, 'Earlybird' (이탈리안 라이그라스 신품종 '얼리버드'의 생육특성과 수량성)

  • This experiment was conducted to breed a very early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) at the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea, from 2022 to 2023. The new variety, named "Earlybird," is a diploid variety characterized by green leaf color, a semi-erect growth habit in late autumn/fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of April 30, Earlybird is categorized as a very early-maturing variety. Compared to the "Kowinearly" control variety, Earlybird's flag-leaf width is wider by 0.2 mm, its flag-leaf length is longer by 1.4 cm, and its plant height is greater by 10.5 cm. Additionally, Earlybird's ear length is 1.4 cm longer than Kowinearly's, and it exhibits lodging resistance. Although the dry matter yield of Earlybird (7,469 kg/ha) is smaller than that of Kowinearly, the difference is not statistically significant. The total digestible nutrient and crude protein content of Earlybird are 63.5% and 8.6%, respectively, which are higher than those of Kowinearly by 1.8% and 0.3%, respectively. The neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber content of Earlybird are 56.9% and 32.0%, respectively, which are lower than those of Kowinearly by 2.2% and 2.3%, respectively.
