This study developed and tested an ultra-low NOx burner in an 80 kW combustion furnace. The experiment was conducted in an 80 kW single burner combustion furnace with changing the swirl numbers, total equivalence ratios, and primary/secondary oxidizer ratios. In this study, liquefied natural gas (LNG) was used as an auxiliary fuel to significantly reduce NOx production. In a thermal power plant, the amount of NOx generated during coal combustion is about 300 ppm. However, using the burner tested in this study, it was possible to reduce the amount of NOx generated via LNG co-firing to 40 ppm. If the input amount of the primary oxidizer is enough for the gas to be completely combusted and the gas and coal are added simultaneously, the combusted gas forms a high-temperature region at the burner outlet and volatilizes the coal. As a result, the N contained in the devolatilized coal is discharged. Therefore, when the coal is subsequently burned, the amount of NOx produced decreases because there is almost no N remaining in the coal. If a thermal power plant burner is developed based on the results of this study, it is expected that the NOx generation will be significantly lower in the early stage of combustion.
This study was conducted to investigate the dry matter production and distribution ratio of dry matter produced for each of 5 botanical types (Virginia-Small Seed, Virginia-Large Seed, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung) of Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Peanut culture limiting region. The total dry weight increased in order of Virginia-Large seed, Virginia- Small Seed, Shinpung, Spanish, Valencia type. The maximum Crop growth rates (Cmax) were Virginia-Small seed 18.22-23.41 g/㎡/day, Virginia-Large seed 19.61-20.03 g/㎡/day, Shinpung 16.33-19.77 g/㎡/day, Spanish 13.86-16.28 g/㎡/day, Valencia 13.97-16.25g/㎡/day, respectively. LAI showed the high value at vinyl-mulching than non-mulching. In the early filling stage, distribution ratio of dry matter produced showed the highest at the shinpung type than the other types.
For humankind, the ocean is a treasure trove of natural resources and an important area that provides major transportation routes. However, marine ecosystems are under threat amidst the global climate change crisis. This is partly due to various sources of pollution emitted from ships, shore facilities, and other sources. In response, the navies of advanced countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe have assessed such a climate change crisis as a new maritime security threat. These countries have made early efforts to prevent marine pollution from warships. These efforts have been legally embodied. This was legislation for technical and organizational structures to be practically applied in the field. Among these navies of developed countries, France has established parliamentary and intergovernmental plans to become a leader in environmental protection at the defense level, not only in the European region but throughout the world. Within this framework, the French Navy, through its internal instruction, has inclined its legal efforts to prevent marine pollution from warships. Therefore, this study examines the legislation for the prevention of marine pollution from warships within the French Navy and compares it with the marine environmental legislation applicable to the ROK Navy. It then deduces the implications for the ROK navy, which is advancing toward a Blue-Water navy.
Korean Ginseng is a medicinal herb which grows naturally in korea. an ancient country situated in north-eastern Asia. Underground construction such as tunneling can induce damages on the surrounding rock mass, due to the stress concentration of in situ stresses and excessive energy input during construction sequence, such as blasting. The developed damage on the rock mass can have substantial influence on the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of the rock masses around a tunnel. In this study, investigation on the generation of damage around an opening in a jointed rock model under biaxial compression condition was conducted. The joint dip angles employed are 30, 45, and 60 degrees to the horizontal, and the synthetic rock mass was made using early strength cement and water. From the biaxial compression test, initiation and propagation of tensile cracks at norm to the joint angle were found. The propagated tensile cracks eventually developed rock blocks, which were dislodged from the rock mass. Furthermore, the propagation process of the tensile cracks varies with joint angle: lower joint angle model shows more stable and progressive tensile crack propagation. The development of the tensile crack can be explained under the hypothesis that the rock segment encompassed by the joint set is subjected to the developing moment, which can be induced by the geometric irregularity around the opening in the rock model. The experiment results were simulated by using discrete element method PFC 2D. From the simulation, as has been observed from the test, a rock mass with lower joint angle produces wider damage region and rock block by tensile cracks. In addition, a rock model with lower joint angle shows progressive tensile cracks generation around the opening from the investigation of the interacted tensile cracks.

Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, one of the representative small rain regions, has developed a traditional irrigation farming system while overcoming and adapting to unfavorable agricultural environments from the days of the ancient nation of Jomunguk to the present. In 2018, its value was recognized and designated as Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System No. 10. This study was conducted with the purpose of examining the characteristics of the traditional irrigation farming system in Uiseong from the viewpoints of irrigation facilities, irrigation communities, and agricultural activities. The research results are as follows. Uiseong-gun has been expanding irrigation facilities for agriculture since long ago, and it has been investigated that a total of 6,227 irrigation facilities are currently distributed along the Wicheon water system that crosses Uiseong-gun from east to west. Irrigation facilities appear differently depending on the topography. The irrigation facility has a 'su-tong' as an irrigation passage and a corkscrew structure 'mot-tchong' as a water quantity control device, so the amount of water was adjusted as needed. Through this facility, surface water with warmer temperature is supplied to the farmland to prevent cold damage to crops. Uiseong has developed activities to organize irrigation communities in one village or several villages to secure agricultural water from an early age. Currently, this tradition continues, and a total of 213 irrigation communities manage 375 irrigation facilities (6.0% of all irrigation facilities). Through this organization, called Mong-ri-gye, water for agriculture is obtained, managed, and distributed equitably. In order to increase agricultural production, Uiseong implemented double cropping by converting rice fields and fields. In the case of Mt. Geumseong, double cropping of rice and barley was mainly carried out until the 1970s, but since the 1980s, double cropping of rice and garlic has been implemented with higher income. One of the unique features of the agricultural system of this region is the spectacular landscape that changes simultaneously from field to rice field in spring and from rice field to field in autumn.
Mucinous adenocarcinoma occurs in 1.6-25.4% of patients with colorectal cancer. We report a case of a 27-year-old man with negative findings on initial colonoscopic biopsy, but finally diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the colon. After undergoing an abdominal CT due to persistent abdominal pain, he was transferred to our hospital. The abdominal CT showed a diffuse and irregular wall thickening in the distal transverse colon. Due to the edema and stenosis of colonic wall, it was difficult to insert the colonoscope into the proximal region; a biopsy revealed chronic colitis with lymphofollicular hyperplasia. Transverse colectomy and lymph node dissection were performed. The diagnosis was mucinous adenocarcinoma of approximately 20×4.5 cm. Compared to adenocarcinoma, mucinous adenocarcinoma is found in a younger population with an advanced stage and is less responsive to palliative chemotherapy. Therefore, recalcitrant abdominal pain even in young people warrants early detection through appropriate examinations such as abdominal CT and colonoscopy.
In this study, we analyzed the effects of program participation aimed at enhancing self-directed learning abilities in university students on the motivational, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of self-directed learning. The study included 2,302 students enrolled in a university located in Region D, and data collection took place from March 2 to December 31, 2022. Comparing the experimental group(751 students) who participated in the program for self-directed learning improvement with the control group(1551 students), the experimental group exhibited a 0.24-point increase, whereas the control group showed a 0.08-point increase, demonstrating a significant difference between the two groups(t=34.89, p<.001). Furthermore, in the post-hoc analysis of self-directed learning ability scores based on the frequency of program participation, the mean difference between those who participated in 1 to 3 programs and those engaged in 4 to 6 programs was 0.067 points(p<.001). The mean difference between participants in 4 to 6 programs and those in 7 or more programs was -0.135 points(p<.001), and the mean difference between those involved in 1 to 3 programs and those in 7 or more programs was 0.067 points(p<.001). These results underscore the importance of recognizing self-directed learning abilities as a crucial competency in higher education and emphasize the significance of efforts to promote program participation and increase participation frequency.
DNA methylation regulates gene expression and contributes to tumorigenesis in the early stages of cancer. In colorectal cancer (CRC), CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) is recognized as a distinct subset that is associated with specific molecular and clinical features. In this study, we investigated the genome-wide DNA methylation patterns among patients with CRC. The methylation data of 1 unmatched normal, 142 adjacent normal, and 294 tumor samples were analyzed. We identified 40,003 differentially methylated positions with 6,933 (79.8%) hypermethylated and 16,145 (51.6%) hypomethylated probes in the genic region. Hypermethylated probes were predominantly found in promoter-like regions, CpG islands, and N shore sites; hypomethylated probes were enriched in open-sea regions. CRC tumors were categorized into three CIMP subgroups, with 90 (30.6%) in the CIMP-high (CIMP-H), 115 (39.1%) in the CIMP-low (CIMP-L), and 89 (30.3%) in the non-CIMP group. The CIMP-H group was associated with microsatellite instability-high tumors, hypermethylation of MLH1, older age, and right-sided tumors. Our results showed that genome-wide methylation analyses classified patients with CRC into three subgroups according to CIMP levels, with clinical and molecular features consistent with previous data.
Purpose: "Hallux valgus" is a common disease encountered in clinical practice and is accompanied by foot deformities. Conservative treatment is commonly used in the early stages of hallux valgus. On the other hand, surgical treatment often becomes necessary as the deformity progresses. Surgical treatments involve various osteotomy methods or joint fusion procedures combined with soft tissue release, and outcomes from these surgical treatments are generally favorable. This study compared two soft tissue release techniques in the hallux region. Materials and Methods: This study conducted a retrospective cohort study on 48 participants who underwent surgical treatment for hallux valgus at a single institution from March 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023. A scarf osteotomy was performed in all cases, and the "Modified Mcbride procedure" or "Trans-articular approach" was done for soft tissue release. Hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and the degree of subluxation of the lateral sesamoid were measured through simple foot radiographs taken before surgery and one year after surgery. Results: In the Modified Mcbride procedure group, HVA, IMA, and the sesamoid position grade decreased from 34.94° to 9.98°, 15.64° to 5.44°, and 2.47 to 0.44, respectively. In the trans-articular approach group, HVA, IMA, and the sesamoid position grade decreased from 33.42° to 7.34°, 15.06° to 6.03°, and 2.17 to 0.58, respectively. There was no significant difference in these changes between the preoperative and one-year postoperative measurements for both techniques (p-value>0.05). Conclusion: A radiological assessment of soft tissue release through the Modified Mcbride procedure and trans-articular approach in hallux valgus did not show significant differences. Therefore, both surgical techniques can be considered in the distal soft tissue release for a hallux valgus correction.
