The study area in the East Sea is located on the northeastern margins of the Ulleung Basin near the Kita-Yamato Bank. The research area provides the important clue to the development of Miocene basins which are characterized by the normal faults and volcanic activities related to rifting in the continental crust. Kita-Yamato Bank is a small sediment-filled graben which was formed by failed rifting in the Early Miocene. The basins rapidly vary the bathymetry, depth of acoustic basement and thickness of sedimentary layer. The tension in the study area caused the extensional lithospheric deformation before/during the Early Miocene. In consequence, tectonic forces resulted in the depression or subsidence of basement from continental rifting in the Kita-Yamato Bank followed by the opening of the Ulleung Basin, and caused the onset of graben or half-graben structure bounded by large blocked syn-rift faults. Afterward no significant tectonic deformation exists, with the consequence that post-rift normal faults with small heave were formed and reactivated by the resultant forces such as tectonic subsidence, sediment loading and volcanic activity. The Cenozoic sediment layer has a maximum thickness of 1.0 s along the center of the graben or half-graben, which overlies the consolidated acoustic basement. Seismic units V and IV supposed to be syn-rift sedimentary rocks are deformed by both the volcanic activities and numerous basement-involved normal faults induced from extension. In the uppermost layer, slump scars resulted from the slope failure are recognized.
It is well known that the apposition of bone at implant surface would be influenced by the microstructure of titanium implants. The purpose of this study was to compare bone healing around the screw-shaped titanium implant with three different surface topographies in the canine mandibles by histological and biomechanical evaluation. All mandibular premolars of six mongrel dogs were extracted and implants were placed one month later. The pure titanium implants had different surface topographies: smooth and machined ($Steri-OSS^{(R)}$: Group II); sandblasted and acid-etched ($ITI^{(R)}$, SLA: Group III) surface. The fluorescent dyes were injected on the 2nd (calcein), 4th (oxytetracycline HCI) and 12th (alizarin red) weeks of healing. Dogs were sacrificed at 4 and 12 weeks after implantation. The decalcified and undecalcified specimens were prepared for histological and histo-metrical evaluation of implant-bone contact. Some specimens at 12 weeks after implantation were used for removal torque testing. Histologically, direct bone apposition to implant surface was found in all of the treated groups. More mature and dense bone was observed at the implant-bone interface at 12 weeks than that at 4 weeks after implantation. Under the fluorescent microscope, thick regular green fluorescent lines which mean early bone apposition were observed at the implant-bone interface in Group III, while yellow and red fluorescent areas were found at the implant-bone interface in Group I and II. The average implant-bone contact ratios at 4 weeks of healing were 54.3% in Group I, 57.7% in Group II and 66.2% in Group III. In Group I, implant-bone contact ratio was significantly lower than Group II and III(p<0.05). The average implant-to-bone contact ratios at 12 weeks after implantation were 64.3% in Group I, 66.7% in Group II and 71.2% in Group III. There was no significant difference among the three groups. In Group I and II, the implant-bone contact ratio at 12 weeks increased significantly in comparison to ratio at 4 weeks(p<0.05). The removal torque values at 12 weeks after implantation were 90.9 Ncm in Group I, 81.6 Ncm in Group II and 77.1 Ncm in Group III, which were significantly different(p<0.05). These results suggest that bone healing begin earlier and be better around the surface-treated implants compared to the smooth surface implants. The sandblasted and acid-etched implants showed the most favorable bone response among the three groups during the early healing stage and could reduce the waiting period prior to implant loading.

One hundred sixty one patients with the carcinoma of uterine cervix received curative radiotherapy at the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Seoul National University Hospital between December, 1979 and December, 1982. According to FIGO classification; stage $I_a 1(0.6\%)\;1_b\;8(5.0\%),\;II_a\;31(19.3\%),\;II_b\;66(41.0\%),\;III_a\;3(1.8\;%),\;III_b\;46(28.6\%)\;and\;IV_a\;6(3.7\;%)$. The proportion of early stage cancer is too small because most of them treated by surgery. External beam whole pelvic irradiation was done first with 10MV x-ray or Co-60 gamma ray upto 4,000 or 5,000 rad for early and advanced cases, followed by one or two courses of intracavitary radiation using Fletcher-Suit Applicator loading c Cs-137. Supplementary external radiation to pelvic side wall to bring dose to 6,000 or 6,500 rads, if there is parametrial involvement or positive pelvic lymph node. Of the 161 Patients, 49 Patients were lost to follow-up but only 22 patients were lost in disease free state. And so, 86.3 percent of the patients were followed to time of recurrence or to date. The results are as follows ; 1. Locoregional control rates according to stage is: stage I $100\%,\;II_a\;90.3\;%,\;II_b\;75.8\%,\;III_a\;66.7\%,\;III_b\;58.7\%\;and\;IV_a\;16.7\%$, respectively. 2. Persistent or recurrent disease were localized in pelvic cavity in 32 of 50 patients and 6 had distant metastasis only. 3. Rectal bleeding was the most common complication and appeared mostly between 6 and 24 months after radiotherapy. Most of them had transient minor bleeding and only 2 patients needed transfusion and 1 patient needed colostomy due to rectovaginal fistula. 4. The 3 year disease free survival rate is: stage I $100\%,\;II_a\;78.0\%,\;II_b\;60.6\%,\;III_a\;66.7\;III_b\;46.3\%\;and\;IN_a\;16.7\%$, respectively.

Background: Colon cancer screening (CRCS) uptake is markedly affected by public awareness of the disease. This study was conducted to assess levels of knowledge of CRC, to explore the pattern of CRCS uptake and identify possible barriers to screening among Saudis older than 50 years of age and primary care providers (PCPs) in Al Hassa region, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in randomly selected primary health care (PHC) centers, 884 Saudis and 39 PCPs being enrolled for data collection. Structured interviews were conducted to obtain information regarding socio-demographic characteristics, personal information relevant to CRC, awareness about early signs/symptoms and risk factors, and barriers to CRCS. Also, a self- administered data collection form was used to assess barriers to CRCS from the physicians' perspectives. Results: More than 66% of participants were lacking knowledge about CRC. Participants with higher educational levels, having ever heard about CRC, and having relatives with CRC had a significantly higher awareness of the disease. The rate of reported CRCS was low (8.6%). After conducting a logistic regression analysis, it was observed that female gender (OR=0.28; 95% CI=0.14-0.57; P=0.001), being unmarried (OR=0.11; 95% CI=0.10-0.23; P=0.001), lower levels of education (OR=0.36; 95% CI=0.16-0.82; P=0.015), and having no relatives with CRC (OR=0.30; 95% CI=0.17-0.56; P=0.001) were significantly associated with a lower CRCS uptake. There was a significant difference between most of the perceived barriers to CRCS and gender. Exploratory factor analysis showed that personal fear (especially fear of the screening results and shyness) was the major factor that hindered CRCS with high loading Eigen value of 2.951, explaining 34.8% of the barriers of the included sample toward utilization of CRCS, followed by lack of awareness of both person and providers (high Eigen value of 2.132, and explaining 23.7% of the barriers). The most frequently cited barriers to CRCS from the physicians' perspectives were lack of public awareness, lack of symptoms and signs, and fear of painful procedures. Conclusions: Poor levels of knowledge about CRC were found among older Saudis attending PHC centers in Al Hassa, Saudi Arabia. It is crucial to implement an organized national screening program in Saudi Arabia to increase public awareness.

The field scale experiment was performed to examine the performance of the constructed wetland for nonpoint source (NPS) pollution loading reduction. Four sets (0.88 ha each) of wetland and pond system were used. After three growing seasons of the wetland construction, plant coverage increased to about 90% even without plantation from bare soil surfaces at the initial stage. During the start up period of constructed wetlands, lower water levels should be maintained to avoid flooding newly plants, if wetland plants are to start from germinating seeds. The average removal rate of $BOD_5$, TSS, T-N and T-P during the first two years was 5.6%, 46.6%, 45.7%, and 54.8%, respectively. The $BOD_5$ removal rate was low and it might be attributed to the low influent concentration. The early stage of wetland performance demonstrated the effectiveness of water quality improvement and was satisfactory for treating polluted stream waters. From the first-order analysis, T-P was virtually not temperature dependent, and $BOD_5$ and TSS were more temperature dependent than T-N. A pond-wetland system was more effective than a wetland-pond or a wetland alone system in water quality improvement, particularly to reduce T-P. Overall, the wetland system was found to be an adequate alternative for treating a polluted stream water with stable removal efficiency and recommended as a NPS control measures.
VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) has been widely used as repair material for bridge deck overlay or rehabilitation, because the overlaid or repaired could be opened to the traffic after 3 hours of curing. Although the field performance of VES-LMC generally indicates that it has an excellent bonding to the substrate and shows a long term performance, little quantitative data or research results have been presented in the literature on structural studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior, interfacial performance, crack propagation, and strengthen effect of RC beam overlaid or repaired by VES-LMC through the 4-point flexural loading test. Two different types of RC beam were fabricated for repair and rehabilitation types. The test result showed that the strengthen effect, in term of flexural stiffness, increases as the depth of repair or overlay increases. More than 40% of stiffness was improved when the depth of repair was up to steel position. However, there was a little difference between 80 mm and 120 mm repaired beam. This means the repair depth must be considered. The interfacial behavior data showed that the repaired or overlaid beams had a little relative displacement. This means that two materials behave comparatively acting together. However, there were two specimens which had large displacement at the interface, because of poor bond strength. This suggested that interface treatment is one of the most important jobs in composite beams.

RC flat plate, which has no large flexural stiffness by boundary beams, may be governed by serviceability as well as strength condition. A construction sequence and its impact on distributions of construction loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors on immediate and long term performances of flat plate. The over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of flat plate system. In this study, for slab deflections, the practical analysis scheme using a linear analysis program is formulated with considering construction sequence and concrete cracking effects. The concept of the effective moment of inertia in calculating deflections of one-way bending member, that is presented in structural design codes, is extended to the finite element analysis of the two-way slab system of flat plates. Effects of over-loads during construction on deflections of flat plate system are analyzed by applying the proposed practical analysis scheme into the critical construction load conditions calculated from the simplified method.
This study was conducted to evaluate the possible application of 2 D-SDS-PAGE (2 DE)-based proteome analysis techniques to the assessment of extreme proteolysis in postmortem skeletal muscle. Eight Hanwoo longissimus muscles were incubated immediately after slaughter for 24 h at 5$^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$ or 36$^{\circ}C$. Warner Bratzler (WB)-shear force and ultrastructural configuration were determined at 24 h, and rate of proteolysis to 24 h was determined by 1 D-SDS-PAGE (1 DE) and 2 DE. In addition, tentative protein identification was performed from peptide mass fingerprints of MALDI-ToF analysis of major protein groups on 2 DE profiles. The result showed that although ultrastructural configuration was similar between the 5$^{\circ}C$ and 36$^{\circ}C$ treatments, meat at 5$^{\circ}C$ had higher WBshear force (approximately 5 kg greater). A higher rate of protein degradation at 36$^{\circ}C$ was observed based on Troponin-T degradation, 1 DE, and 2 DE analysis. This indicates that proteolysis during the early postmortem period was a significant determinant of shear force at 24 h. Little difference in proteolysis between 5$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ treatments was found based on classic 1 DE profile assessment. Meanwhile, considerable differences in the 2 DE profiles between the two treatments were revealed, with substantially higher rate of proteolysis at 15$^{\circ}C$ compared to 5$^{\circ}C$. Nuclease treatment improved 2 DE profile resolution. 400 ${\mu}$g and 600 ${\mu}$g of sample loading appeared to be appropriate for 24 cm pH 3-10 and pH 5-7 IPG strips, respectively. Protein detection and quantification of the 5$^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$ and 36$^{\circ}C$ 2 DE profiles revealed 78, 163 and 232 protein spots respectively that were differentially modified in terms of their electrophoretic properties between approximately pI 5.3-7.7 with the molecular weight range of approximately 71-12 kDa. The current results demonstrated that 2 DE was a superior tool to 1 DE for characterising proteolysis in postmortem skeletal muscle.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the axial-flexural load-carrying capacity of concrete-encased and-filled steel tube (CEFT) columns. To restrain local buckling of longitudinal bars and to prevent premature failure of the thin concrete encasement, the use of U-cross ties was proposed. Five eccentrically loaded columns were tested by monotonic compression. The test parameters were axial-load eccentricity, spacing of ties, and the use of concrete encasement. Although early cracking occurred in the thin concrete encasement, the maximum axial loads of the CEFT specimens generally agreed with the strengths predicted considering the full contribution of the concrete encasement. Further, due to the effect of the circular steel tube, the CEFT columns exhibited significant ductility. The applicability of current design codes to the CEFT columns was evaluated in terms of axial-flexural strength and flexural stiffness.
For economical earthquake resistant design of cable-stayed bridge tower, the use of energy dissipation systems for the earthquake protection of steel structures represents an alternative seismic design method where the tower structure could be constructed to dissipate a large amount of earthquake input energy through inelastic deformations in certain positions, which could be easily retrofitted after damage. The design of energy dissipation systems for bridges could be achieved as the result of two conflicting requirements: no damage under serviceability limit state load condition and maximum dissipation under ultimate limit state load condition. A new concept for cable-stayed bridge tower seismic design that incorporates sacrificial link scheme of low yield point steel horizontal beam is introduced to enable the tower frame structure to remain elastic under large seismic excitation. A nonlinear dynamic analysis for the tower model with the proposed energy dissipation systems is carried out and compared to the response obtained for the tower with its original configuration. The improvement in seismic performance of the tower with supplemental passive energy dissipation system has been measured in terms of the reduction achieved in different response quantities. Obtained results show that the proposed energy dissipation system of low yield point steel seismic link could strongly enhance the seismic performance of the tower structure where the tower and the overall bridge demands are significantly reduced. Low yield point steel seismic link effectively reduces the damage of main structural members under earthquake loading as seismic link yield level decreases due their exceptional behavior as well as its ability to undergo early plastic deformations achieving the concentration of inelastic deformation at tower horizontal beam.
