  • Seo Sang-cheon (1903-1950) was a sports leader and administrator who contributed greatly to the development of Korean sports after Japanese colonial era and liberation. And to us, he is known as the first person to introduce weightlifting to Korea. In this paper, through the main contents of the books of the 1930s related to this research topic, including the Modern Physical Fitness Promotion Act (1931) and the Modern Iron Stick Movement Act (1934), the main contents of Seo Sang-cheon's books related to physical training during this period, I would like to illuminate the characteristics such as infinite affirmation of the 'body training' and the exposure of disciplined upper body photographs in Seo Sang-cheon's writings related to physical training during this period. On the one hand, contrary to this, I tried to mention the regrets of his writings and political moves emphasizing the 'spirit' after the 1940s. We found that Seo Sang-cheon's early writings were focused on individual physical training, beyond the boundaries of nation and ethnicity. In contrast, his later writings reflect a shift towards thinking of personal physical training in alignment with the development of the state. We believe that this change in his writings demonstrates that Seo Sang-cheon's interests extended beyond physical education into political and social spheres, while also symbolizing a transformation in his perception of the body.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the geological terms used in the elementary school science curriculums from 1876 to present. We collected the data of geological terminologies based on what is being used in the revised 2007 national curriculum. In this study, data was divided into three periods according to political events, "The Modern Enlightenment Period (1876~1910)", "The Japanese Colonial Period (1910~1945)", and "The Current Curriculum Period (1945~present)". During the early modern enlightenment period, translated Chinese characters' terminologies by western scholars in Qing-China were used in science books. The late modern enlightenment period, we used many translated Japanese textbooks in schools, which naturally introduced the way that Japan's terminology is used. In the Japanese colonial period, Korean students had to study science subjects written in Japanese characters, so they had used Japanese terminologies of science. After the liberation of Korea from the Imperial Japan, there was an efforts to make new Korean terminologies of geology under the new current national curriculum. However, the terminologies used in Korean textbooks ended up using and borrowing the same way that the Japanese-Sino terms of science used later.

However, under the superficial realism in his later plays, we find that they contain experimental devices and themes. True West (1980) is the last play of ills realistic family trilogy. This play shows that the tradition of Old West, which is symbolized and replaced by desert, disappeared in the industrialized clues of modern West. The Old West is compared which the modern West through the struggle of two brothers, Lee and Austin. Their father, 'Old Man', ran out on his family and went to the desert but did not succeed there. He shows that he failed in achieving the American Dream. The family appears unusual and demolished The relationships of the characters are not based on love and belief. After Austin recognizes the actual situation finding that there is no real life in the modern West, he tries to leave the city and his family. He wants to go to the desert in search of a new life. However, in the last tableau Lee blocks the exit and the two brothers square off. It implies that they are doomed to continue their struggle. • The term "new woman" (신여성 [Sinyeoseong], 新女性) refers to an idealized image of contemporary women during the so-called modern period in East Asia. In Korea, these "modern girls" were also referred to as modan (毛斷), or "cut-hair", reflecting changes in appearances that rejected the traditional value system in favor of "the new" in everyday life. Although it was used to refer to the perceived educated leaders of this new period, it also had the negative connotation of referring to frivolous women only interested in the latest fashion. The popular discourse on this "new woman" was constantly changing during this early modern period in East Asia, ranging from male-driven women's movements to women-driven liberal and socialist movements. The discourse often included ideals of what constituted female impeccability in women's domestic roles and enlightened views on housekeeping, yet in most cases the "new woman" was also expected to be a good wife and mother as well as a successful career woman. The concept of the "new woman" was also accompanied by an upheaval in women's social roles and their physical boundaries, and resulted in women repositioning themselves in the new society. The new look was a way of constructing their bodies to fit their new roles, and this again was rapidly reproduced in visual media. Newspapers, magazines, and plays had gained immense popularity by this time and provided visual material for the age with covers, advertisements, and illustrations. This research will explore the fashion of the "new woman" through archival resources, specifically magazines published in the 1920s and 1930s. It will investigate how women's appearances and the images they pursued reflected the ideal image of the "new woman." Fashion information providers, trendsetters, and levels of popular acceptance will also be examined in the context of the early stage of the fashion industry in East Asia, including production and distribution. Additionally, as the idea of the "new woman" was a worldwide phenomenon throughout the 19th and early 20th century, the effect of Japanese colonialism on the structure of Korean culture and its role as a cultural mediator will also be considered in how the ideal image of beauty was sought, and whether this was a western, colonial, or national preference.

  • Objectives : This study examined the characteristics of famine relief and fasting formulas in Korean Medical Texts from early Joseon to early modern period. Methods : In addition to previous studies and texts, basic materials were collected from various academic database such as the Korean Medical Classics Database, Korean History Database, Chinese Text Project, Weijiwenku, etc., then analyzed. Results : In Korean Medicine from the early Joseon to early modern Korea, there was a strong awareness to use fasting prescriptions which were applied in Daosim for the purpose of famine relief, using both medicinals and common food ingredients together as complex prescriptions rather than single ingredient formulas. Famine relief and fasting formulas were continuously listed in many medical texts published after the Donguibogam, in modified or newly improved forms. Moreover, the food ingredients and medicinals used in these formulas were consisted of those which could be easily found in the famished nation of the time. Many of these formulas were tried and tested prescriptions, frequently used in clinical settings. Most of the ingredients and medicinals used in the famine relief and fasting formulas were sweet, bland, and neutral in nature, supporting Qi circulation and tonifying the Spleen and Stomach. Therefore in times of famine, these medicinals could help prevent digestive problems and decline of stamina. Conclusions : Research and contemporary interpretation on the famine relief and fasting formulas could contribute to not only health management but to relieving nutrition imbalance and famine, expanding the field of Korean Medicine application.

  • This research focuses on the life and works of architect Yi Hunwoo, who was active in early 20th century. Yi has been previously mentioned in a few research documents, but not as a main subject of interest. Thanks to digitalized historic databases, the authors of this research were able to access more information about Yi. It was discovered that he was born in Korea in the late 19th century and then attended the Nagoya Higher Technical School in Japan. After repatriation, he participated in a few public projects in Korea as an in-house architect at the Governor-General's office, then started his own practice and produced his individual projects. He also contributed articles on innovations in residential design to newspapers. Chronologically, his activities as an architect preceeded those of Park Gilyong, who has been conventionally regarded as the first Korean modern architect so far. This research would like to establish Yi Hunwoo as a historic figure whose professional career spanned the earlier stage of the Korean modern architecture, based on the records of his life and professional activities. The authors do not wish to present the architectural analysis nor evaluation of his works, which will be subject to future researches.
