Traditional Medicine in Korea : The Past and the Present

  • The Korean peninsula, located between the vast Chinese mainland and Japan, has a unique cultural background that goes back five thousand years. In ancient times, the region was deeply influenced by Chinese culture, and traditional medicine in Korea was no exception. The Korean character, HAN GUL (24 alphabets), was invented at in the early 1400s by The Great King Sejong (1397-1450) of the Chosun dynasty. But few changes were made to traditional medicines for about 500 years thereafter. At the start of the 20th century, missionaries from western countries introduced new concepts and techniques of medicine. During the last century, there was enormous development in modern medical sciences. Even today, however, natural medicine -including folk medicine (or traditional Chinese medicine) - plays an important role in Korean health care. In this paper, we will review and discuss traditional Korean medicines as it has evolved over the past three thousand years.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a fashion show model as a local festival program by designing the costumes of Chosun dynasty from later 16th century to early 17th century and planning a fashion show. The designed costumes are based on the life of the representative poetess, Maechang Lee, from Buan-gun, Jeollabukdo. The planning of the fashion show consists of seven stages, that is, finding a theme, composing the story, designing costumes, choosing music, planning intermission events, producing visuals and booklet, and directing model performances. This paper focuses mainly on finding a theme, composing the story, and designing costumes.

초기 한양도성계획의 도형적 해석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Geometric Form of the Preliminary Plan "hanyang" in Early Chosun Dynasty)

  • This study shows the characteristics of the early phenomena of the city plan Hanyang (old city Seoul). It consists of two steps. One is to search for the constructing principles of the geometric setting. And the other is to inquire and interpret the objects of beginning and ending points of that setting. The results based on geographic analysis and historical facts are as follows: 1) The city plan Hanyang shows a certain hierarchy:the major axis and the locations of the palace and the city set up in the prority. This priority made onto lower hierarchical plans such as the site plans of palaces and city wall. For example of the significant objects are Namdaemum (South Gate of the city wall) and Kwanghwamun (South Gate of the Palace). They are on the main axis, and became the basic points of the detailed city plans. 2) The palace palace on its major axis, right-angled minor axis, and 4 grade inclination to north. The four small city wall gates located on the base of four greater gates. 3) The geometric characteristics as constructing principle found on certain hierarchical order. Thus, the natural elements as mountains, had an important effect on the arrangement of major facilities and those main constructions made on lower - hierarchical settings. 4) These facts related closely to the philosophy of Jung, Do-Jon, the initiative planer of the Hanyang.

조선후기 감로탱화 하단화를 통해 본 예인복식 연구(제1보) - 사당패 남자복식을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Costumes of Male Performers in the late Joseon's Gamrotaenghwa(Part I) - Korean Nectar Ritual Painting -)

  • This study is focused on the man's costumes of Sadangpae(the troupe of performers) shown in Gamrotaenghwa (감로탱화) during the late Chosun dynasty. Originally Gamrotaenghwa was used as a painting for a Buddhist praying ceremony, 또Young-ga-cheon-do-je(영가천도제). It shows us the lives of the commoners in those days. Gamrotaenghwa reflects the changes of costume style in the late Chosun period. The early styles of po(포, coat) for male performers in the 17th century were changeui(창의) and dopo(도포), which had the front panels(seop) overlapped deeply and sleeves that got wider as time passed. After the 18th century, Male performers wore a simpler coat such as sochangeui(소창의), which had narrow sleeves and long slits on the both sides. Especially the coats of acrobats were fastened on the center front with buttons. Heuklip(흑립: black hat), somoja(소모자: small cap) and jeonlip(전립: wool hat) were used as hats for the male performers. Originally, heuklip was the hat that represented the noble status: yangban(양반). However, it was popularized among the commoners in the late Chosun period. As time passed on, the heuklip became more popular and its shape also changed. Somoja and jeonlip were shown throughout the entire Gamrotaenghwa. Unlike heuklip, those were common hats for Sadangpae. The costumes of entertainers shown in Gamrotaenghwa were very similar to those of the commoners. However, it seems that there were some differences of the costumes depending on the roles they performed.

  • 본고의 목적은 여말선초에 나름대로 독특한 삶을 영위하며 조선조 사상계에 적지 않은 영향을 끼친 길재의 사상적 맥락을 고찰하여 재조명하는데 있다. 고려 말의 급변하는 정치상황 속에서 길재는 위화도회군 이후 이성계 등의 행동 방향을 살펴보고 쇠퇴해 가는 고려조의 명운을 근심하며 이러한 시대에 대처하는 대응방안으로 백이숙제의 절개를 고수하겠다는 입장을 분명하게 드러냈다. 여말선초에 있어서 길재가 남긴 행적은 한 신하로서의 충절(忠節)을 넘어서서, 유학적 진리에 의한 삶으로써 한 본보기가 되었다는 점에서 더 큰 의미가 있다. 조정에서 벼슬을 내렸을 때, 굳이 사퇴하며 임금을 섬기지 않은 것은 단순히 절개란 이름을 사기 위한 것이 아니다. 그것은 세상에 나오고 세상에 숨는 일을 옳게 하려는 관계이며, 유교 교리에 부합하려는 것이었다. 조선조에 들어와 역대 군왕들과 많은 유학자들이 길재의 의리정신을 추존하여 한국유학사상사에 있어서 우뚝한 위치에 올려놓은 것은 바로 이러한 점에 바탕을 둔 것이라 하겠다.

조선초기 귀화인(歸化人)의 사향(賜鄕)과 특징 (A Study on the Sahyang and Characteristics of Naturalized Citizens in Early Chosun)

  • 본 논문은 귀화인(歸化人)(향화인(向化人)) 가운데 조선초기 실록기사에서 사향(賜鄕)[왕으로부터 관향(貫鄕)을 하사받음]이 확인되는 인물들의 사향 과정과 활동에 대해 살핀 글이다. 조선초기 실록을 통해 검토 가능한 사향(賜鄕) 사례는 한인이 4명[오진(吳眞), 이민도(李敏道), 당성(唐誠), 매우(梅佑)]으로 다수이지만, 서역에서 온 회골인(回?人)[위그르인, 설장수(?長壽)]과 외오아국(畏吾兒國) 출신[이현(李玄)]도 있으며, 향화(向化) 왜인(倭人)도 2명[평순(平順), 피상의(皮尙宜)]이나 된다. 이들이 우리나라에 귀화한 시기는 고려 충렬왕 때부터 조선 정종 원년까지 걸쳐있으며, 귀화한 인물은 관향을 하사받은 인물의 증조, 조, 부, 본인 등 다양하다. 이들의 사향 시기는 태조 태종 세종 세조조이며, 하사받은 관향은 계림(鷄林) 임주(林州) 해주(海州) 상주(尙州) 밀양(密陽) 충주(忠州) 창원(昌原) 동래(東萊) 태안(泰安) 등으로 전국에 걸쳐 있다. 사향지(賜鄕地)는 처향(妻鄕)일 가능성이 높다. 관향(貫鄕)을 하사받은 인물은 역관(譯官)이 다수로 대명외교(對明外交)와 대일외교(對日外交)에 많은 공적을 보이고 있으며, 그 외에 의술(醫術)과 점술(占術), 율문(律文) 분야에서 활동한 인물도 있다. 과거급제를 한 설장수는 지공거(知貢擧)도 담당했으며, 이민도와 당성은 조선 개국에 기여하여 개국공신과 개국원종공신에 참여하기도 했다. 이와 같은 활동실적이 있었기에 왕으로부터 관향을 하사받는 사향(賜鄕)의 영광을 누릴 수 있었을 것이다. 그러나 사향의 영광을 입은 관향이지만, 현재 임주 이씨, 창원 평씨, 동래 피씨 등은 그 후손을 확인할 수가 없다. 귀화(歸化) 한인(漢人)의 후손은 모두 현존하지만, 향화(向化) 왜인(倭人)의 후손은 단절되어 있다. 이는 조선시대의 대외인식과도 밀접한 연관이 있을 것으로 여겨진다.

소설 "토지"를 통한 구한말에서 일제강점기의 음식문화 연구 (Study on Food Culture During the Late Chosun dynasty and Japanese Colonial Period in the Novel "Toji")

  • This study was intended to examine the continuance and transformation of food culture during the enlightenment and Japanese ruling era by analyzing the novel of "Toji". In the novel "Toji", the chaotic political and economic situation is reflected, along with the peoples' hard lives in the latter era of the Choson Dynasty. After the full-fledged invasion of China by the Japanese, the shift to a wartime posture was accompanied by an increased need for food. This led to a rationing and delivery system for rice in the late 1930s. While it was hard for people to obtain even brewer's grains and bean-curd dregs, food distribution officers were well off. Another distinctive feature of the food culture during the enlightenment and Japanese ruling era was that foreign food and recipes were introduced naturally to Korea through the influx of various foreigners. The industry of Choson was held by Japanese monopolistic capital, as a result, Choson had equal to the role as a spending site and was only gradually left destitute. In the Japanese ruling era, there were new type of business including such as patisserie of the types of civilization in the town, and those tempted Korean people. However, the Japanese and pro-Japan collaborators dominated commercial business. Being urbanization through the modernization, it was became patronized fast food in the populous downtown, and the change of industry structure and life style greatly influenced into our food culture. Acceptance the convenient Japanese style fast food such as Udong, pickled radish made was actively accepted with a longing for the advancement civilization. After the enlightenment, many Japanese exchange students went to Tokyo to get advanced civilization and provided urban mood according to their consumption of bread, coffee, Western food, which were considered a part of the elite culture.

한국복식 사이버 학습 시스템 개발 (Development of the Contents for Cyber Learning System of Korean Costumes)

  • 본 연구에서는 한국복식 사이버 학습을 위한 WBI(Web Based Instruction)를 개발하여 교수-학습에 적용함으로써 학습자의 가정과 학습에 대한 태도를 긍정적으로 변화시킬 수 있도록 컨텐츠를 설계하고 구현하였다. 컨텐츠의 내용은 한국복식을 삼국시대, 통일신라시대, 고려시대, 조선시대, 개화기로 구분하여 각 시대별 복식의 변천과정과 종류, 구조적 특징을 설명하여 우리의 전통 복식 문화를 바르게 이어 나갈 수 있도록 하며, 용어검색을 만들어 학습 중에 학생 스스로 문제를 해결할 수 있는 기능을 지원한다. 개발된 사이버 학습 한국 복식컨텐츠는 현 중, 고등학교의 교육정보 시스템에 적용하여 사이버 학습을 가능하게 하고 교육현장에서 가정과 교육을 위한 지원 시스템으로 사용될 수 있다.

"삼화자향약방(三和子鄕藥方)"의 부원(復原)연구 (A Study of the Restoration of Samhwajahyangyakbang)

  • Samhwajahyangyakbang, a medical book of Hyangyak which was presumed to be published by Samhwaja in the late Goryeo dynasty, became the original source of Hyangyakganibang. As Hyangyakganibang became the original source of Hyangyakjesengjipseongbang which was supplemented to be Hyangyakjipseongbang, Samhwajahyangyakbang is a fundamental book which is the original source of Hyangyak medical books such as Hyangyakganibang and Hyangyakjipseongbang in the late Goryeo and the early Chosun dynasty. I restored the articles of Samhwajahyangyakbang, mainly focusing on the remaining articles in Hyangyakjipseongbang, followed by supplementing some other remaining articles with the help of , a database of old medical books, and then, recorded and discussed the results in the paper. 1. The remaining articles of Samhwajahyangyakbang were found in Hyangyakjipseongbang, Uibo and Uibanghappyeon. Among them, there is a prescription which is not overlapped in Uibanghappyeon. 2. The classification system of Hyangyakjipseongbang was alternatively adopted due to the absence of classification or table of contents in Samhwajahyangyakbang. 3. There are a total number of 152 articles in the restored Samhwajahyangyakbang and 151 articles out of the total number have been restored from Hyangyakjipseongbang. There are 5 articles which remain as notes in the citations of other books in Hyangyakjipseongbang. 4. There are a total number of 246 prescriptions in the restored Samhwajahyangyakbang. 5. Even though Samhwajahyangyakbang is a concise medical book, it is one of the core medical books which are cited in Hyangyakjipseongbang. In addition, it is the most frequently cited in Hyangyakjipseongbang among the Korean medical books. It implies that the compilers of Hyangyakjipseongbang considered Samhwajahyangyakbang the most valuable book among the Hyangyak medical books. It is speculated that such results could be achieved because Samhwajahyangyakbang was very popular in those days and its' printing quality was also good. On the contrary, the number of citations of Hyangyakgugeupbang is much less than that of Samhwajahyangyakbang. It is presumed that Hyangyakgugeupbang could not be distributed widely not because it was less valuable but because its' printing quality was poor.

조선후기(朝鮮後期) 범어사(梵魚寺) 승인공장(僧人工匠)의 동래지역(東萊地域) 조영활동(造營活動) (Constructional Activities by the Buddhist Craftsmen of Bumeo-sa at Dongrae Province in the Late Period of Chosun Dynasty)

  • The purpose of this study is to show the constructional activities conducted by the Buddhist craftsmen of Bumeo-sa, especially to focus on the government constructions at Dongrae province in the 1700s. The result is as follows: 1) In the early 1700s, Bumeo-sa developed to become a great Buddhist temple and was be able to possess a large number of workers and craftsmen. On the base of these workforce and skill, the Buddhist craftsmen of Bumeo-sa played the most leading roles for the government constructions until the late of 1700s. 2) Though the conditions of finance and workforce at Dongrae province were not good enough at that time, several huge government constructions could be promoted successively, owing to Bumeo-sa's supports. 3) Above all, the Buddhist craftsmen in Bumeo-sa monopolized the construction of Dongrae Hyangyo in the middle of the 1700s. But the private craftsmen got replaced their main roles in the government and temple constructions since the late of the 1700s.
