  • Based upon the vegetation data of woody plants by plot sampling method in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Jeombong, the study was carried out to examine importance value, rank abundance curve, and species abundance curve, and comparatively evaluate seven different species diversity indices for Shannon-Wiener index, Simpson index, McIntosh index, Log series, Margalef index, Berger-Parker index, and species richness, according to topographic positions. The minimal area which meant only few more species were increased was 3.48 ha in total. The dominant species of valley were Carpinus cordata, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, and Abies holophylla, and the dominant species of mid-slope were Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Carpinus cordata, Tilia amurensis, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla. Moreover, the dominant species of ridge were Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Tilia amurensis, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, and Acer mono. According to rank abundance curve and species abundance curve, species evenness was also low. All of Log series, species richness, Margalef, and Shannon-Wiener index discriminated that valley had the highest diversity, and ridge had the lowest diversity; but, Simpson index, McIntosh index, and Berger-Parker index represented that mid-slope had the highest diversity, and ridge had the lowest diversity. Uniquely, in Berger-Parker index, mid-slope was the higher value than total.

  • The mushrooms collected at seven areas of Mt. Chiak in 2002 and 2003 were classified to analyse the distribution and species diversity. Frequency (number of mushroom : N), number of species (S), relative species density (RSD), similarity index (C), richness index (R1), variety index (V1), evenness index (E2), and dominance index(D1) were investigated. Total N and S was 143 and 84, respectively. The RSD was 0.179 ~ 0.226 of the 7 areas. The yearly C of the total area (0.213) was 8.2%. more higher than the average C of 7 areas (0.131). The order in the coefficient of variation (CV) of the indicator for 7 areas was N (10.5%) > D1 (9.2%) > V1 (8.9%) > S (8.5%) > R1 (7.4%) > E2 (2.2%). The average R1 of the 7 areas was 5.36 with the range from 4.85 to 6.01, and 16.72 for the total area. The average V1 of the 7 areas was 16.24 with the range from 14.44 to 18.66, and 68.82 for the total area. The average E2 of the 7 areas was 0.95 with the range from 0.926 to 0.982, and 0.819 for the total area. The average D1 of the 7 areas was 0.071 with the range from 0.055 to 0.073, and 0.081 for the total area. The correlation between N and 5 kinds of diversity indicator (S, R1, V1, E2, D) was not statistically significant, but the correlation between R1, E2 and D1 was statistically significant each other.

  • The aquatic insect collected at six areas (each 2 for mountain area, plain field, and urban area) from 2009 to 2011 were classified to analyze the distribution and diversity of species. Frequency (number of aquatic insect: N), number of species (S), similarity index (C), richness index (R1, R2), variety index (V1, V2), evenness index (E1, E2, E3, E4, E5), and dominance index (D1) were investigated. Total N and S were 143 and 84, respectively. C matrix of 153 combinations was constructed with the average of 0.542. The average C of 3 years (0.659) was 9.9% P, more higher than the average C of 6 areas (0.560). The average values of the index of 18 plots were 2.28, 0.17, 1.24, 1.08, 0.07, 0.06, 0.01, 0.87, 0.31, 0.93 for R1, R2, V1, V2, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, D1, respectively. The order in the coefficient of variation (CV) of the indicator for 18 plots was N (70.0%) > E3 (54.9%) > E1 (49.6%) > R2 (40.5%) > S (35.3%) > R1 (33.7%) > E2 (28.4%) > E5 (15.9%) > V1 (11.1%) > E4 (6.3%) > V2 (5.1%) > D1 (4.8%). The correlation matrix with 66 combinations between the indexes was constructed with statistical significance for 33 combinations. However, R1, V1, E2 and D1 were the proper indexes to represent species diversity of aquatic insect based on the correlation matrix and the theory of statistical independence. The richness index was highest in mountain, variety index in urban area, and evenness index in plain field. However, the dominance index was lowest in urban area.

  • Nematode fauna in Dokdo island was investigated for two years between 2008 and 2009. Population density and biomass were $239,500m^2$ (26,000-836,000) and $103.9mg/m^2$ (3.0-388.6), respectively. Total of 31 species of nematodes were identified : Acrobeloides is the most important genus with prominence value (PV) of 117.8, followed by Rhabditidae (PV = 81.9), Prismatolaimus (PV = 39.0), and Aphelenchoides (PV = 31.4). Among feeding group, bacteriovorus nematode composed 77% of density and 62% of biomass followed by plant-parasitic and fungivorus nematodes. A species of Pratylenchus having distinctive tail terminus is under study as a new species. Biological indices, Shannon and Wiener index (2.46), Simpson's diversity index (0.86), Species evenness (0.73), Species richness (1.30) indicate that nematode fauna in Dokdo island is diverse and unique. This study may give a general idea of nematode fauna at the Dokdo island.

  • This study was carried out to investigate flora and vegetation in cutting slope along a construction age sequence (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) of forest roads in Yongchiri, Younghyunmyon, Sacheonshi, Geyongsangnamdo. Mean slopes of the cutting and banking slopes of forest roads constructed were ranged from $42^{\circ}$ to $54^{\circ}$. Soil texture in the cutting and banking sides of forest roads constructed in 2012 was loam, while sandy loam in the cutting and banking slopes of forest roads constructed between 2007 and 2011. Vegetation cover percentage was higher in the banking slopes (66%) than the cutting slopes (49%) of forest roads. Total flora were higher in the banking slopes (50 species) than the cutting slopes (46 species) of forest roads. Species diversity was generally higher in the banking slopes than in the cutting slopes in all forest roads. In addition, the species diversity index was the highest in the cutting slopes (1.4015) of forest roads constructed in 2011, while the highest in the banking slopes (1.5603) of forest roads constructed in 2012. The results indicate that evenness index in the cutting and banking slopes of recent construction roads was high compared with old construction roads because of the distribution of simple plant species.

  • This study was investigated the species composition of demersal fishes by a bottom trawler GAYA, in order to be used basic data for resources management of fishery in the jointly controlled waters of the East China sea. We caught 52 species, 1,167 individuals and 186.171kg in biomass in summer, and 1,924 individuals and 200.871kg in biomass in winter The first dominant species in individuals in summer was Glossanodon semifasciatus, and in biomass was Dentex tumifrons. But that in winter was Ovalipes punctatus in both individuals and biomass. It was a special phenomenon that crustacea was to be the first dominant species compared with general offshore fishery in Korea. Catch per unit effort (kg/hr) of bottom trawl in winter was higher than that in summer. There was also big difference by station in the diversity index, the evenness index and the dominant index.

  • Species composition and quantitative and body length composition of the ichthyoplankton were investigated by samples collected from the coastal waters of uljin in January, April, July and October, 2002. During the study, the collected fish eggs were identified as belonging to 7 taxa. The most of dominant species Engraulis japonicus, were accounted for 38.34% of the total fish eggs, followed by Sillago sihama (25.84%). The collected larvae and juveniles were identified into 25 taxa, 18 families, 7 orders. The domninant species Engraulis japonicus accounted for 90.46% of the total larvae and juveniles, followed by Sebastes schlegeli 2.04%. These 2 taxa constituted 92.50% of the total collected larvae and juveniles. The diversity index of species per months of the collected juveniles the coastal water of Uljin, 2002 was 0.0878~2.3855 and the evenness index was 0.0451~0.9300. in case of dominance index was 0.3000~0.9914 against the evenness index. The analyzed species diversity index by the each stations was 0.3035~0.7440 and the dominance index was 0.8919~0.9669 against the species diversity index. The similarity of community structure per season was very high because of the relative difference (0.010), which was the least in Summer and Fall. In addition, the community structure was very similar in state 1 and state 4 out of each stations because the relative difference was the least, 0.139.

  • To examine the species composition and population fluctuation of butterflies at Mt. Yudal, Mokpo, we collected butterflies from May, 2001 to April, 2002 by dividing the study site into four subyegions. As a result, seven families comprising 40 species were identified. The patterns of population fluctuations at the four subregions showed that the lower the elevation the higher the number of species and individuals. Monthly fluctuations of buttefly species produced an M-shaped curve, whereas those of individuals produced a monotonic curve with a maximum peak during August. To see effectively the changes of numbers of species and individuals, we calculated the indices of species richness and evenness by subregions and months. As a result, both indices fulfilled the primary criterion of independence and showed more or less negative association: when heterogeneity is higher, evenness is lower. Examination of butterfly populations over long-term periods might provide an evidence of global warming and a guideline to conserve and manage habitats.

  • The flora of Kunsan Wolmyong park was 77 families, 168 genera, 240 species, 2 subspecies, 35 varieties, 1 formae or 278taxa. Using the Phytosociology method, 12 plant communities were recognized ; Alnus japonica, Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii, Pinus rigida, Castanea crenata, Quercus acutissima, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Alnus hirsuta, Quercus serrata, Aluns firma, Liriope platyphylla and Reynoutria communities. Similarity between different communities was low for most of the cases except for Pinus densiflora, Pinus Thunbergii and Pinus rigida communities kept comparely high with ond another. Species diversity was analyzed by species richness(SR), species diversity index(H') and evenness(J'). Castanea crenata, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Alnus firma communities were higher in SR, H' than the other communities. But Pinus rigida, Quercus acutissima and castanea crenata communities were higher in evenness than the other communities. To investigate the plant community structure and to establish restoration counter plan of a Wolmyeng Park in Kunsan City. As a remedial approach, following is propesed. first, Establishment of an adequate planting plan and development of slope stalilization method by planting native species. second, Sellection of adequate species by planting experiments for pioneer species, native species, and dietary species. third, Landscape planting zones should be managed artificially, the others be managed with ecological approach.

  • To understand interrelations between water quality and community structure of phytoplankton around the season of red tide outbreak, field surveys were conducted 10 times off the coast of Tongyeong from July to September in 2002. Because of heavy rain for 10 days, environmental conditions were changed and differed from the previous year, sustaining high nutrients and low salinity. During the surveyed period 48 species of 29 genera of phytoplankton were identified, and diatom and dinoflagellate was $51.8\%\;and\;38.0\%,$ respectively, At the time of bloom, cell counts of C. polykrikoides were outstanding but the number of species remarkably decreased. There were striking differences in dominant species among research stations before the bloom. Diatoms were the most dominant group in the whole study area in that period. Diversity and evenness index were highest just before outbreak of the red tides (2 Aug, 2002). During the bloom (4 Aug.), it decreased to the lowest value and then began to increase slowly. The result of PCA on water quality vs phytoplankton biomass showed that the land loads of nutrient may be the main cause of summer rally of phytoplankton biomass.
