  • This work investigated the effects of different conductive agents on the electrochemical properties of anodes. SiOx possesses high theoretical capacity and shows excellent cycle performance; however, the low initial coulombic efficiency and poor electrical conductivity limit its applications in real batteries. In this study, electrodes were fabricated using two different conductive agents, and the resulting physical and electrochemical properties were analyzed. SEM observations confirmed the formation of a CNT conductive network throughout the electrodes, while the electrical conductivity contributed to the electrode was confirmed by impedance measurements. Thus, the electrode fabricated with the CNT conductive agent showed greater capacity and superior cycle performance than did the electrode fabricated using the DB conductive agent.

  • The demand for lithium has increased sharply due to the explosive increase in lithium secondary batteries for environment-friendly vehicles (EV: Electric Vehicle, HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle, PHEV: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). Traditionally, lithium has been produced mainly from lithium-containing minerals and brine, and recently it also has been recovered along with other valuable metals by recycling cathode materials of lithium secondary batteries. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed various recovering precesses of lithium from lithium-containing substances.

  • Lithium ion Batteries commercially available since the early nineties in Japan are going to be more and more important for portable electronic devices and even EV applications. Today several companies around the world are working hard to join to market for Lithium secondary batteries. Based on the growing interest for commercial use of batteries also the materials have to be reviewed in order to meet large scale production needs. The requirements especially for electrolytes for lithium batteries are extremely high. The solvents and the lithium salts should be of highest purity. So the supply of these chemicals including packaging, transportation and storage but also the handling in production are critical items in this field. Frolic impurities are very critical for LiPF6 based electrolytes. The influence of water is tremendous. But also the other protic impurities like alcoholes are playing an Important role for the electrolyte quality. The reaction of these species with LiPF6 leads to formation of HF which further reacts with cathode materials (spinel) and anode. To understand the role of the protic impurities more clearly the electrolyte was doped with such compounds and was analyzed for protic impurities and HF. These results which directly show the relation between impurities and quality will be presented and discussed. In addition several investigations on different packaging materials as well as methods to analyze and handle the sensititive material will be addressed. These questions which are only partly discussed in literature so far and never been investigated systematically cover some of the key parameters for understanding of the battery chemicals. This investigation and understanding however is of major importance for scientist and engineers in the field of Lithium ion and Lithium polymer batteries.

  • There is a great deal of current interest in the development of rechargeable batteries with high energy storage capability due to an increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) with driving ranges comparable to those of gasoline-powered vehicles. Among various types of batteries under development, a Li-O2 battery delivers the highest theoretical energy density; thus, it is considered a promising energy storage technology for EV applications. Despite the fact that extensive research efforts have been made in the field of Li-O2 batteries in recent years, there are still many technical challenges to be addressed, such as low round-trip efficiency, poor reversibility, and poor power capability. In this article, we provide a short review on the fundamental electrochemistry of Li-O2 batteries with non-aqueous electrolytes and on electrode materials that have been employed in cathodes (oxygen electrodes). The major aim of this mini-review is to highlight the physical and electrochemical origins of scientific challenges facing Li-O2 battery technology and to overview the strategies proposed to overcome them.

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) have recently been in the spotlight and have been rapidly developed to reduce the carbon emission with respect to the transport sector. Most EVs currently employ lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as power sources because they have a higher energy density and a lower self-discharge than other batteries. However, the LIBs cannot respond to high power demands when the state of health (SOH) falls below 80%. Therefore, the SOH of the LIBs must be accurately measured or estimated. To date, many methods have been studied and proposed for measuring or estimating the SOH. In this paper, representative methods among them are reclassified and introduced.

  • This paper presents a novel application of LCC resonant converter for 60kW EV fast charger and describes development of the high efficiency 60kW EV fast charger. The proposed converter has the advantage of improving the system efficiency especially at the rated load condition because it can reduce the conduction loss by improving the resonance current shape as well as the switching loss by increasing lossless snubber capacitance. Additionally, the simple gate driver circuit suitable for proposed topology is designed. Distinctive features of the proposed converter were analyzed depending on the operation modes and detail design procedure of the 10kW EV fast charger converter module using proposed converter topology were described. The proposed converter and the gate driver were identified through PSpice simulation. The 60kW EV fast charger which generates output voltage ranges from 50V to 500V and maximum 150A of output currents using six parallel operated 10kW converter modules were designed and implemented. Using 60kW fast charger, the charging experiments for three types of high-capacity batteries were performed which have a different charging voltage and current. From the simulation and experimental results, it is verified that the proposed converter topology can be effectively used as main converter topology for EV fast charger.

  • The battery powered electric vehicle (EV) is one of most promising technologies in 21st century. Though the lithium batteries are playing an important role in the EVs, they are only applicable until their capacities reach 80%, the end of its useful first life. Yet, these batteries can live a second life such as Energy Storage Systems (ESS). In order to utilize the Residual Useful Life (RUL) of the batteries the State of Health (SOH) of them needs to be estimated by a nondestructive test such as Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technique. Though many kinds of different EIS instruments are commercially available, most of them can only test a battery module less than 10V and the price of the instrument is very high. In this paper a low-cost EIS instrument suitable for measuring the impedance spectrum of the high voltage battery module is proposed and its validity is verified through the experiments. In order to prove the accuracy of the developed EIS instrument its measured impedance spectrum is compared with the results obtained by a commercial instrument. The Chi Square value calculated between two impedance spectrum measured by both developed and commercial instruments are less than 2%, which prove the strong correlation between two results.

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) are spreading rapidly and many counties are promoting hybrid and fully EVs through legislation. Therefore, an increasing amount of lithium ion batteries will reach the end of their usable life and will require effective and sustainable end-of-life management plan which include landfill disposal or incineration. The current research focuses on more sustainable methods such as remanufacturing, reuse and recycling in order to prepare for future battery compositions and provide insights to the need recycling methods to be developed to handle large amounts of batteries sustainably in the near future. The two most prominent material recovery techniques are hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy which are explored and assessed on their relative effectiveness, sustainability, and feasibility. Hydrometallurgy is a superior recycling method due to high material recovery and purity, very low emissions, high prevalence of chemical reuse and implementation of environmentally sustainable compounds. Expanding recycling technologies globally should take the research and technologies pioneered by Umicore to establish a sustainable recycling program for end-of-life EVs batteries. Emerging battery technology of Telsa show the most effective designs for high performance batteries includes the use of silicon which is expected to increase capacity of batteries in the future.

  • The development for Eco-friendly cars has been expanded as the concern about environmental pollution and a rise in gas prices. The Electric Vehicle(EV) and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV) are generally connected on distribution power systems to charge the traction batteries. The growing number of EV/PHEVs could have a effect on distribution power systems and result in overload of power utilities and power quality problems. In order to reduce the adverse effect on distribution power systems, the influence of electric vehicle loads should be evaluated. In this paper, the influence of electric vehicle loads is evaluated by using OpenDSS(Open Source Distribution System Simulator) according to the penetration rate of electric vehicle.
