  • We study the resolved stellar populations of ESO149-G003, a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy in the vicinity of the Sculptor group. We present F606W-F814W vs. F814W colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) obtained from HST/ACS archival data. We analyze the stellar content of ESO149-G003, as well as the spatial distribution of stars selected from stellar isochrone fitting analysis. Distance measurement using the tip of the red giant branch method, age measurement of various populations seen in the CMD, and isochrone fitting result will be shown and discussed.

  • We performed CCD surface photometry in B,V,R and I filters for three southern spiral galaxies:ESO598-G009,NGC1515 and NGC7456. Isophotal map, luminosity profile, ellipticity profile and position angle profile were obtained for these galaxies using SPIRAL package. The results show that one of the galaxies, ESO598-G009 has relatively large bulge component and changes in position angle due to spiral arms. The NGC7456 has very small bulges; and the isophotal map of the NGC1515 shows that it is a typical spiral galaxy with bar.

  • This paper suggests a material mixing method to mix several materials in a structure. This method is based on ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization), which has been used to optimize topology of only one material structure. In this study, two criterions for material transformation and element removal are implemented for mixing several materials in a structure. Optimal topology for a multiple material structure can be obtained through repetitive application of the two criterions at each iteration. Two practical design examples of a short cantilever are presented to illustrate validity of the suggested material mixing method. It is found that the suggested method works very well and a multiple material structure has more stiffness than one material structure has under the same mass.

  • ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization) method is known that elements involved low stress value are removed from the previous model or that elements are added around elements involved high stress level on it and then the optimized model is obtained with required weight. Rejection ratio/addition ratio and evolutionary ratio are predefined and elements having lower/higher stress than reference stress, which average Mises stress on edge elements times rejection ratio, are deleted/added. In this study, when the plate having a cutout is subjected various in-plane load, a cutout shape is optimized using ESO method. ANSYS is used to analyse a finite element model and optimization procedure is made by APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language). ESO method is useful in rather than a complex structure optimization as well as a cutout shape optimization.

  • In case of ESO(evolutionary structural optimization) which is one of topology optimization methods, the element removal ratio is fixed throughout topology optimization by 1 or 2 %. As a result it has no flexibility for various types of structures and thus the rate of convergence might not be efficient. Thus various element removal methods are developed in order to improve the efficiency of ESO. In this paper, various element removal methods for ESO are compared with each other. Each element removal method is explained, and applied to a bracket and a Michell type of beam. In addition, a new bi-directional element removal method is suggested in order to obtain much better optimized topology. From the results of stress, displacement and the rate of convergence for the examples under the same mass constraints, it is verified that the suggested element removal method is the most effective. .

  • This paper presents an extended state observer (ESO) based direct torque control (DTC) for use in induction motor systems to handle the issues of time delays, load torque disturbances and parameter uncertainties. Direct torque control offers an excellent torque response and it does not require a proportion integration (PI) controller in the current loop. However, a PI controller is still adopted in the outer speed loop to generate the torque reference value, which is a slow method. An ESO based compound control scheme is proposed to improve the response rate and accuracy of the torque reference signal, especially when load torque is injected. In addition, the time delay problem is analyzed and compensated for in this paper to reduce torque ripples. The proposed disturbance compensation technique based direct control scheme is shown to have good performance both in the transient and stable states via simulations and experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve convergence speed of topology optimization procedure using the existing ESO method and to deal with topology decision of the truss structures according to a boundary condition, such as cantilever type. At the existing ESO topology optimization procedure for the truss structures, the adjustment of member sizes according to target stress has been executed by increasing or reducing a very small value from each member size. In this case, it takes too much iteration till convergence. Accordingly, it is practically hard to obtain optimum topology for a large scale structures. For that reason, it is necessary to improve convergence speed of ESO method more effectively. During the topology decision procedure, member sizes are adjusted by calculating approximate solution for member sizes corresponding to the target stress at every step, the new member sizes are adjusted by such method are applied in FEA procedure of next step.

  • We have conducted BV RI CCD surface photometry of three spiral galaxies ESO 598-G009, NGC 1515 and NGC 7456. In order to understand the morphological properties and luminosity distribution characteristics for each galaxy, we derived isophotal map, position angle profile, ellipticity profile, luminosity profile, color profile and color contour map. ESO 598-G009, which has a bright bulge component and a ring, shows a trace of gravitational interaction. NGC 1515 is a spiral galaxy with a bar and dust lane. NGC 7456 shows typical characteristics of a late type spiral galaxy.

  • In this paper, the speed regulation problem of permanent synchronous motor (PMSM) systems under the vector control framework is studied. A model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) based on the Lyapunov stability theory is first designed. Since the standard MRAC method provides poor disturbance rejection performance in the case of strong disturbances, a composite control method which combines the MRAC method and the disturbance estimation method, called the MRAC+ESO method, is proposed. An extended state observer (ESO) is introduced to estimate the lumped disturbances. The obtained estimated value acts as a feedforward compensation term to the MRAC controller. A stability analysis of the composite control method is given. Simulation and experimental results are presented and compared to show the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • The plasticized cellulose diacetate (CDA) was prepared by melt processing methods using triacetine (TA) as a plasticizer. Additionally, processability of CDA was enhanced by using epoxidized soybean oil as a secondary plasticizer. The glass transition temperature of plasticized CDA was observed at $50^{\circ}C$ lower than virgin CDA and the incorporation of 5% ESO also resulted in the additional $20^{\circ}C$ decrease in the $T_g$. The tensile properties and modulus of plasticized CDA were better than commercial PP and PLA. The aerobic biodegradability of CDA in controlled compositing condition resulted in 90% of degradation during 60 days.
