Employees' Environment, Social, and Governance Activity Recognition as Job Resource Enhancing Job Performance via Job Satisfaction and Prosocial Behavior among Call Center Employees (직무자원으로서 ESG 활동 인식이 직무만족과 친사회적 행동을 통해 직무수행능력 향상에 미치는 영향, 콜센터 직원들을 대상으로)

  • This study examines the role of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) activity recognition on job satisfaction, prosocial activities, and job performance among customer representatives working in call center environments. After gathering data from 264 call center workers in major South Korean insurance companies, the analysis w as performed using SmartPLS 4.0. This study's findings reveal that employee recognition of ESG activities significantly enhanced job satisfaction. The impact of ESG activity recognition on prosocial behavior was positive but relatively weak. Job satisfaction influences both prosocial behavior and the job performance of employees. Finally, prosocial behavior positively influences job performance. The most significant finding is that employees' recognition of companies' ESG management practices serves as a job resource. This recognition enhances employees' attitudes, behavior, and performance, signaling the potential benefits of informing employees about corporations' ethical behaviors.

Predicting Future ESG Performance using Past Corporate Financial Information: Application of Deep Neural Networks (심층신경망을 활용한 데이터 기반 ESG 성과 예측에 관한 연구: 기업 재무 정보를 중심으로)

  • Corporate ESG performance (environmental, social, and corporate governance) reflecting a company's strategic sustainability has emerged as one of the main factors in today's investment decisions. The traditional ESG performance rating process is largely performed in a qualitative and subjective manner based on the institution-specific criteria, entailing limitations in reliability, predictability, and timeliness when making investment decisions. This study attempted to predict the corporate ESG rating through automated machine learning based on quantitative and disclosed corporate financial information. Using 12 types (21,360 cases) of market-disclosed financial information and 1,780 ESG measures available through the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability during 2019 to 2021, we suggested a deep neural network prediction model. Our model yielded about 86% of accurate classification performance in predicting ESG rating, showing better performance than other comparative models. This study contributed the literature in a way that the model achieved relatively accurate ESG rating predictions through an automated process using quantitative and publicly available corporate financial information. In terms of practical implications, the general investors can benefit from the prediction accuracy and time efficiency of our proposed model with nominal cost. In addition, this study can be expanded by accumulating more Korean and international data and by developing a more robust and complex model in the future.

  • Purpose While research on ESG management in airlines is ongoing, research on airports, especially regional ones, remains insufficient. This study's point of departure is the inquiry into how the local airport industry is addressing global environmental shifts and engaging in ESG management activities. Design/methodology/approach Based on previous studies, the relationship between ESG(Environmental, Social, Governance) management, safety management, reputation, and management performance was analyzed. We analyzed 578 questionnaires through structural equation modeling using AMOS 21.0 to test our hypotheses. Findings First, environmental, social, governance, and safety management have a positive effect on both reputation and business performance. Second, reputation has affected business performance. Third, reputation was affected in the order of governance management, safety management, environmental management, and social management.

A Study on the Effect of Corporate ESG Activities on Business Performance : Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Corporate Values Perception (기업 ESG 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : 기업가치관 인식의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • This study attempted to investigate how corporate ESG practice affects management performance. To this end, the effect of environmental responsibility activities, social responsibility activities, and governance activities in terms of environment (E), social (S), and governance (G), which are the three elements of ESG, on management performance, mediating organizational effectiveness, and controlling corporate value perception, were empirically analyzed. The analysis results are as follows. First, environmental responsibility activities, social responsibility activities, and governance activities all had a positive (+) effect on management performance. Second, environmental responsibility activities, social responsibility activities, and governance activities all had a positive (+) effect on organizational effectiveness. Third, it was found that organizational effectiveness plays a partial mediating role between environmental responsibility activities, social responsibility activities, governance activities, and management performance. Fourth, it was found that corporate value perception has a moderating effect on environmental responsibility activities and governance activities, excluding social responsibility activities. Therefore, strengthening ESG practice will not only be essential for investment, but also help improve management performance. In addition, the results of this study suggest that ESG education for members should be strengthened to promote ESG practice, and it is necessary to re-establish management strategies so that corporate values reflect ESG.

  • ESG is a kind of financial data that pays more attention to corporate environment, social responsibility and corporate governance. This study explores the relationship between ESG and corporate sustainable development through empirical analysis. This study uses the regression method of fixed effects to conduct empirical research on the data of China's A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2020. The research results show that: good ESG performance can promote the sustainable development of enterprises. At the same time, the higher the attention, the better the ESG performance can promote the sustainable development of enterprises. This study enriches the related research on ESG and has certain reference value for promoting the sustainable development of enterprises.

A Study on Estimation of Input Criteria for ESG Performance Index : The Country Level of ESG Index Perspective (국가별 ESG 이행성과지표 투입기준 산정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable tool that can classify and measure detailed indicators related to the performance of ESG implementation in the country and verify their applicability. Based on World Bank's data as input data, 67 types of ESG-related detailed indicators measured in a total of 239 countries were tested to derive an optimal model that could group detailed indicators into three categories: environment, society, and governance. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that a total of 10 detailed indicators had a statistically significant relationship with the country's ESG performance. In addition, the detailed indicators showed a positive correlation with the primary latent variables E, S, and G, and showed a high overall index in the suitability of the model to secure the validity and reliability of variable input. As a result, this study confirmed that several detailed performance indicators constituting ESG can be classified as latent variables, and it can be said that clear criteria for the selection method and input validity of variables were presented.

A Study on the Effect of Internal and External Pressures on ESG Activities and Business Performance (내외부 압력이 ESG 활동과 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a leading case of empirical analysis of whether, when corporate stakeholders (government, investors, customers, managers, employees) put pressure on companies for ESG management, it affects the introduction and implementation of ESG activities (environmental, social, governance) and affects business performance. As for the research method, a sustainability report was published, and a web survey of Korea Research Inc. was conducted from May 10 to May 20, 2022 targeting ESG management managers of 192 companies, and analyzed through the PLS structural equation model. As a result of the study, it was found that the introduction and execution of ESG is closely influenced by the pressure from the government, investors, managers, and employees, and in particular, the internal pressure of current managers and executives and employees has a great impact on the introduction and implementation of environmental, social, and governance activities. In particular, although external pressure also has some influence, it is practical to suggest that strong internal pressure is necessary for continuous activities and performance. And, methodologically, the main activity indicators of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, which are the most representative ESG management indicators, were developed as a questionnaire, and reliability, validity, and model fit were secured through comparison with indicators of multiple systems and expert reviews. The limitations of this study are that more in-depth analysis by industry or size is possible when ESG management is mature and sufficient samples are secured, and complex ESG pressure factor modeling is possible when more diverse stakeholders are added.

The Motivating Role of Sentiment in ESG Performance: Evidence from Japanese Companies

  • The paper investigates investor sentiment's role in boosting Japanese companies to enhance their environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance. Using ESG scores of 367 firms between 2005 and 2019 from the ASSET4 database, we find that negative sentiment in the previous year, both firm and market level, can be a stimulation for the company's commitments to its ESG activities next year. Notably, the moderating effect of the business sector and economic cycle on the sentiment-ESG inference are detected in our study differentiating between corporate and market sentiment, which have never been reported before. In detail, we discover that the impact of firm-specific sentiment is less pronounced for high-sensitive ESG firms. On the other hand, the driving force of market sentiment on corporate social behaviors weakens when economic recessions happen. Our results are robust after controlling for potential endogeneity issues and using alternative proxies for market sentiment.

The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Rating, Firm Value and the Corporate Ownership Concentration

  • This study analyzed the relationship between ESG performance and corporate value using panel data from Chinese equipment manufacturing companies spanning from 2012 to 2021, and it also examined whether ownership structure moderates this relationship. We have contributed to filling the gap in existing research. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: Firstly, similar to previous researches, ESG performance was found to have a positive and statistically significant impact on corporate value. Secondly, when the three dimensions of ESG - Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) - were analyzed separately, it was observed that E and S have a positive and statistically significant impact on corporate value, while G has a negative and statistically significant impact. Thirdly, ownership concentration emerged as a significant moderating factor in explaining the connection between ESG performance and corporate value. Lastly, when the three dimensions of ESG were analyzed separately, ownership concentration was found to serve as a positive moderating factor in the relationship between corporate value and E and S, but it did not play a statistically significant role for G.

Understanding ESG Management and the Possibility of ESG Archives (ESG 경영의 이해와 ESG 아카이브의 가능성)

  • Interest in ESG management, which spread through the UN PRI in 2006, has recently spread throughout our society. Consumers use a company's activeness in the ESG field as the standard of consumption behavior, and the international community is reorganizing and strengthening various regulatory measures. In the investment market, non-financial performance (ESG information) is used as an important investment indicator along with financial performance (credit rating). Due to these changes in the corporate evaluation paradigm and market pressure, if a company neglects ESG response activities, it is more likely to be excluded from market selection, and accordingly, the importance of ESG management is also increasing. Companies are making various efforts to secure legitimacy in response to these market pressures, but in the process, it is difficult to systematically manage and utilize records/data that are the basis for ESG management. For a basic understanding of ESG management, this paper summarizes the emerging process of ESG and the current ESG-related regulations applied to companies. Through this, it can be seen that ESG management is not carried out with the good will of the company, but is accepted as a management strategy for the survival of the company according to the change in the corporate evaluation paradigm. Through interviews with the company's ESG-related personnel, the company's ESG response process was divided into passive communication and active communication, and the problems identified during the interview were summarized for each communication type. In addition, in the process of passively and actively communicating ESG management information with internal and external stakeholders, the possibility that ESG archives can function as a tool to overcome problems for each communication type was raised, and five types of ESG archives that can play this role were presented.
