  • Physiological effects in SAM P6 and Rl by administration of Cervus cornu, Astragali Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, and Angelicae Radix extracts were screened to know in vivo activities of each extracts. We measured complete blood cells (CBC) such as aBC, HGB, and HCT using coulter's method. Plasma concentrations of albumin, glucose, alkaline phosphatase, calcium, creatinine, inorganic phosphate, urea and total iron ere also analyzed using biochemical clinical autoanalyzer. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, total T$_3$, and total T$_4$ were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay methods. At 12 weeks after birth, Cervus conu or Astragali Radix or Rehmanniae Radix extracts were given 5 g/Kg.day p.o. for 0,7,14,21, and 30 days each in both SAM Rl and SAM P6. Angelicae Radix study was done the same as the others except the mice were 16 weeks after birth. The RBC, HGB, and HCT levels after administration of Astragali and Rehmanniae were elevated in SAM Rl, but those in Cervi study were increased in SAM P6 the most. Decreases in alkaline phosphatase concentration of SAM Rl and P6 after Cervi administration were detected. Total plasma iron concentration was decreased by Angelicae administration in SAM P6. In general, Angelicae and Rehmanniae stimulate increases in cortisol, but total T$_3$ and T$_4$ levels were also elevated by all these extracts. In conclusion, these herval medicine extracts help hematopoiesis in SAMs through probably different mechanisms.

  • Bucky shuttle memory systems were investigated by the classical molecular dynamics(MD) simulations. Energetics and operating response of the shuttle-memory-elements u?ere examined by MD simulations of the C/sub 60/ shuttle in the nanomemory systems under various external force fields. Single-nanopeapod type was consisting of three fullerenes encapsulated in (10, 10) boron-nitride nanotube and filled Cu electrode. Studied systems could be applied to nonvolatile memory. MD simulation results showed that the stable bit flops could be achieved from the external force fields of 0.1 eV/Å for single-nanopeapod type.

  • The properties of TiN as a barrier against Cu diffusion ere studied by sheet resistance measurement, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and capacitance-voltage(C-V) measurement. The sensitivities of the various methods were compared. Specimens with Cu/TiN/Ti/SiO2/Si structure were prepared by various deposition techniques and annealed at various temperatures ranging from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ in 10%H2/90%Ar ambient for hours. As the effectiveness of the barrier property of TiN against Cu diffusion was vanished, the irregular-shaped sports were observed and outdiffused Si were detected on the surface of the Cu thin film. The C-V characteristics of the MOS capacitors varied drastically with annealing temperatures. In C-V measurement, the inversion capacitance decreased at annealing temperature range from $500^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ and increased remarkably at $800^{\circ}C$. These variations may be due to the Cu diffusion through TiN into $SiO_2$ and Si.

  • Two different quartz types of gasification reactor were used for pyrolysis and gasification of sawdust, ricestraw, ricehusk and municipal wastes which contain only cellulosics., operating at 1 atmospheric and vacuum pressure respectively. Also a stainless steel autoclave gasification reactor was used which is possible to use up to 100 atmospheric pressures and $800^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature to complete pyrolysis and gasification reaction. The catalysts used in this reaction w- ere $K_2CO_3$, $Na_2CO_3$, Ni and Ni-$K_2CO_3$ as CO-Catalyst. The product gas mixtures were identified to be CO, $CO_2$, $C_3H_3$, $CH_4$ and $CH_3CHO$ etc. by Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The pressurized gasification reaction shows significant increase in terms of methane composition and yield of product gases, comparing with those from unpressurized gasification reactions. The total volume of product gas mixtures amounts to 1600-1800ml per1gof waste of waste lignocellulosics or municipal waste, and the metane content of the gas mixtures reached to 40%, when $800^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 100 atmospheric pressures with Ni-$K_2CO_3$ as CO-catalyst in the pressurized gasification reaction were used. This results show that the product gas mixtures containing 40% of methane call be used for alternative enegy source.

  • The ccpA gene encoding catabolite control protein A (CcpA) of Leuconostoc mesenteroides SYl, a strain isolated from kimchi, was cloned, sequenced, analyzed for transcript, and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The ccpA ORF (open reading frame) is 1,011 bp in size, which can encode a protein of 336 amino acid residues with a molecular mass of 36,739 Da. The transcription start site was mapped at a position 49 nucleotides upstream of the start codon, and promoter sequences were also identified. The putative cre site overlapped with the -35 promoter sequence. The deduced amino acid sequence of the CcpA contained the helix-turn-helix motif found in many DNA-binding regulatory proteins. CcpA from 1. mesenteroides SY1 had $54.6\%$ identity with CcpA from Lactobacillus casei. The Northern blot experiment showed that ccpA was transcribed as a single 1.1 kb transcript, and transcription was repressed when grown on media containing glucose. CcpA was overproduced in E. coli BL21(DE3) cells using the pET expression vector, and purified to an apparent homogeneity. Gel Mobility Shift Assay with purified CcpA and a DNA fragment containing the ere sequence of the $\alpha$-galactosidase gene (aga) from L. mesenteroides SY1 revealed that CcpA bound specifically to the cre site of aga.

  • This study is about the cultural policy related to fine art under the U. S. Military Government in Korea(USAMGIK), from September 8, 1945, to August 15, 1948. Drawing on the previous studies of Korean art history in the 'Liberation Period', this study especially concentrates on intention, attitude and activities of the USAMGIK. Particularly the historical documents, stored at the National Archives at the College Park, Maryland, U.S.A., were valuable to do research on the cultural policy of USAMGIK. The cultural policy was subordinated to the political objectives of occupation that can be summarized to building a stronghold of anti-communism in South Korea. Under the U.S. Military government control, cultural matters were assigned to the Cultural Section, the Bureau of Education, which later turns into the Bureau of Culture, the Department of Education. The Bureau of Culture dealt with matters of the ancient Korean art treasures and of the Korean contemporary art. USAMGIK reopened the Korean National Museum which had been closed by the Japanese since the World War II period. After that, U.S. Department of State sent arts & monuments specialists to South Korea for investigating ancient Korean art and culture. Although some of the destructed art treasures were restored during the occupation, th ere were many negative cases including intentional destruction of historic sites or loot of art treasures by U.S. army. In contrast to their interest in the Korean antiquities, USAMGIK payed little attention to promoting the Korean contemporary artists and their arts. USAMGIK distrusted and suppressed the artists of leftism, while they kept good relations with the pro-American artists and the right-wing artists. In conclusion, the visual-cultural policy of USAMGK was mainly planned and carried out in order to preserve the national interest of the United States. This period produced long-term effects on the fine art and visual culture of South Korea, in terms of institution, policy, and reorganization of art community based on anti-cummunism.
