  • Metatropic dysplasia is a rare spondylo epi metaphyseal dysplasia characterized by progressive kyphoscoliosis, short limbs with relatively large hands and feet and limited of motion and enlargement of the large joints. It is diagnosed based on the characteristic clinical and radiological features. Even though benign cases of this disease are frequently reported, metatropic dysplasia can often have a fatal outcome. We describe a sporadic case of the well-delineated lethal metatropic dysplasia.

Al-doping Effects on Structural and Optical Properties of Prism-like ZnO Nanorods

  • ZnO seed layer were deposited on quartz substrate by sol-gel method and prism-like Al-doped ZnO nanorods (AZO nanorods) were grown on ZnO seed layer by hydrothermal method with various Al concentration ranging from 0 to 2.0 at.%. Structural and optical properties of the AZO nanorods were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL). The diameter of the AZO nanorods was smaller than undoped ZnO nanorods and its diameter of the AZO nanorods decreased with increasing Al concentration. In XRD spectrum, it was observed that stress and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the AZO nanorods decreased and the 'c' lattice constant increased as the Al concentration increased. From undoped ZnO nanorods, it was observed that the green-red emission peak of deep-level emission (DLE) in PL spectra. However, after Al doping, not only a broad green emission peak but also a blue emission peak of DLE were observed.

  • This study intends to analyse the economical aspect of a GSHP(Ground Source Heat Pump) system compared to the conventional system which is consisted with a boiler and a chiller. This study has simulated four systems in Incheon. It developed and analyzed for applications in a residential and an office building which was based on the hourly EPI(Energy Performance Index, $kWh/m^2yr$). Case 1 is utilizing a boiler and a chiller to meet heating and cooling demand of a house. Case 2 is utilizing the same conventional set up as Case 1 of a office. Case 3 is summation of Case 1(house) and 2(office) systems and loads. And Case 4 is utilizing a GSHP to meet the combined loads of the house and office. The method of the economic assessment has been based on IEA ECBCS Annex 54 Subtask-C SPB(Simple Payback) method. The SPB calculated the economic balanced year of the alternative system over the reference system. The SPB of the alternative systems (GSHP) with 10%, 30% and 50% initial incentive has been calculated as 9.38, 6.72 and 4.06 year respectively while the SPB without initial incentive of systems was 10.71 year.

A Study on the Strengths of Epoxy Resin Mortar under Heat Exposure (열을 받은 에폭시 수지 모르터의 강도에 관한 연구)

  • The major objective of this study was to investigate the heat resistance of epoxy resin mortar. For this purpose, these tests of compressive and bending strength were accomp- olished with various heating temperature (40˚C, 60˚C, 80˚C, 100˚C, 120˚C), and with various mixing ratio (1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 6, 1: 8, 1:10, 1:12, 1:14). The exprimental resin was to be Epi-Bis type epoxy resin, which is widely used as construction materials. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The variations of color tone started to begin at 60˚C, and it has come out very heavy at 120˚C. It was assumed that the decrement of weight resulted from carbonization were about 0.22% at 100˚C, and about 0.34% at 120˚C. 2. The compressive and bending strength were increased with temperature rise up to 80˚C, but these were made rapid decrease when the given temperature was over. And so, the mean decrement of compressive and bending strength at 120˚C reached up to 35.5% and 26.4%, respectively. 3. The regression equation between compressive and bending strength for epoxy resin mortar under heat exposure were obtained as follows; od=0. 371oc+39. 23 (r=0. 986) And the estimated value of bending strength was corresponded to about 37 percent in comparing with that of the compressive strength. 4. Consquently, the heat resistance temperature of epoxy resin mortar was to be around 80˚C, and it was generally very low values. But it was regarded that the epoxy resin mortar will not be difficult with materials of civil engineering works and agricultural structures.

Antimicrobial activities and skin barrier improvement effect of Eruca sativa extract (루꼴라(Eruca sativa) 추출물의 항균활성과 피부장벽 개선 효과)

  • Eruca sativa is a rocket plant and a member of the Brassicaceae, which is considered to be an important chemo-preventive plant family. Although Eruca sativa has positive biological effects, the effect of Eruca sativa extract (ES) on improvement of skin barrier function has not been reported. In this study, we investigated the applicability of functional materials by examining a variety of physiological activities of Eruca sativa extract. ES showed anti-microbial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. In particular, antimicrobial activities of ES against B. subtilis was the highest. Additionally, immunohistochemical analysis of protein marker related to keratinocyte differentiation was determined. The treatment by ES (50 mg/L) showed a significant increase of involucrin expression compared with treatment by 0.1% DMSO as a control in skin equivalents, the ES-treated group showed similar level in the expression of involucrin compared to the group treated with the same concentration of WY14643 in $EpiDerm^{TM}$, a three-dimensional model of skin equivalents. These results indicate that ES promotes the expression of protein related to barrier properties of the skin. Therefore, ES may be an effective ingredient for skin barrier improvement.

ZnO Nanorods Grown on CdxZn1-xO Seed Layers with Various Cd Mole Fractions

  • ZnO nanorods were grown on the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers with various Cd mole fractions by hydrothermal method. The effects of the Cd mole fraction for $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers on the structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence. The narrowest full-width at half-maximum and largest grain size of the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers, indicating improvement in crystal quality, were observed at the Cd mole fraction of 0.5. At the Cd mole fraction of 0.5, the largest enhancement in the density, the crystal quality, and the growth rate of the ZnO nanorods was observed while their appearance was not affected significantly by the incorporation of the Cd in the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers. Consequently, the luminescent properties of the ZnO nanorods were enhanced. The largest improvement in the structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods was observed at the Cd mole fraction of 0.5.

  • We report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-gate AIGaAs/InGaAs PHEMTs for millimeter-wane applications. The epi-wafer structures were designed using ATLAS for optimum DC and AC characteristics, 0.351m-gate AIGaAs/rnGaAs PHEMTs having different gate widths and number of fingers were fabricated using electron beam lithography Dependence of RF characteristics of PHEMT on gate finger with and number of gate fingers have been investigated. PHEMT haying two 0.35$\times$60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$ gate fingers showed the knee voltage, pinch-off voltage, drain saturation current density, and maximum transconductance of 1.2V, -1.5V, 275㎃/mm, and 260.17㎳/mm, respectively. The PHEMT showed fT(equation omitted)(current gain cut-off frequency) of 45㎓ and fmax(maximum oscillation frequency) of 100㎓. S$_{21}$ and MAG of the PHEMT were 3.6dB and 11.15dB, respectively, at 35㎓

Growth of GaN epilayer on the Si(001) substrate by hot wall epitaxy (Si(001) 기판 위에 HWE 방법으로 성장한 GaN 박막 성장)

  • The home-made hot wall epitaxy (HWE) system was utilized for GaN epitaxial layer growth on the Si(001) substrate. It was appeared that GaN epilayer grow with mixed phase of Zinc blende and Wurtzite structure from photoluminescence (PL) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis at the room temperature. We found that intial growth layer has Wurtzite structure from photoluminescence (PL) and x-ray diffractio (XRD) analyses at the room temperature. Wefound that initial growth layer has Wurtzite structure when initial deposition time, the temperature of substrate and source are 4 min, $720^{\circ}C$ and $860^{\circ}C$ respectively, and at the epi growth process GaN, epilayer was grown with relatively stable Wurtzite structure when the temperature of substrate and source are $1020^{\circ}C$ and $910^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • 갈륨-질화물(GaN) 기반의 고속전자이동도 트랜지스터(high electron mobility transistor, HEMT)는 마이크로파 또는 밀리미터파 등과 같은 고주파 대역의 통신시스템에 널리 사용되는 전자소자로 각광받고 있다. GaN HEMT는 AlGaN/GaN 또는 AlGaN/InGaN/GaN 등과 같은 이종접합구조(heterostructure)로부터 발생하는 이차원 전자가스(two-dimensional electron gas, 2DEG) 채널을 이용하여 캐리어 구속효과(carrier confinement) 및 이동도의 향상이 가능하다. 또한 높은 2DEG 채널의 면밀도(sheet concentration) 와 전자의 포화 속도(saturation velocity)를 바탕으로 고출력 동작이 가능하여 차세대 이동통신용 전력 증폭기로 주목받고 있다. 그러나 이론적으로 우수한 특성과 달리, 실제 소자에서는 epi 성장시의 결함이나 전위, 표면 상태에 따른 2DEG 감소 등의 영향으로 이론보다 높은 누설 전류와 낮은 항복 전압 특성을 가진다. 특히, 기존의 GaN HEMT 구조에서는 Drain-Side Gate Edge에서의 전계 집중이 항복 전압 특성에 미치는 영향이 크다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 Trapezoidal Gate구조를 이용하여 Drain 방향의 Gate Edge가 완만히 변하는 구조를 제안하였다. 이를 위해 $ATLAS^{TM}$ 전산모사 프로그램을 이용하여 Trapezoidal Gate 구조를 구현하여 형태에 따른 전류-전압 특성 및 소자의 스위칭 특성 및 Gate 아래 채널층에 형성되는 Electric Field의 분산을 조사하고, 이를 바탕으로 고속 동작 및 높은 항복 전압을 갖는 AlGaN/GaN HEMT의 최적화된 구조를 제안하였다. 새로운 구조의 Gate를 적용한 AlGaN/GaN HEMT는 Gate edge에서의 전계를 분산시켜 피크 값이 감소되는 것을 확인하였다.

Inhibitor Design for Human Heat Shock Protein 70 ATPase Domain by Pharmacophore-based in silico Screening

  • The 70 kDa heat-shock protein (Hsp70) involved in various cellular functions, such as protein folding, translocation and degradation, regulates apoptosis in cancer cells. Recently, it has been reported that the green tea flavonoid (−)-epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) induces apoptosis in numerous cancer cell lines and could inhibit the anti-apoptotic effect of human Hsp70 ATPase domain (hATPase). In the present study, docking model between EGCG and hATPase was determined using automated docking study. Epi-gallo moiety in EGCG participated in hydrogen bonds with side chain of K71 and T204, and has metal chelating interaction with hATPase. Hydroxyl group of catechin moiety also participated in metal chelating hydrogen bond. Gallate moiety had two hydrogen bondings with side chains of E268 and K271, and hydrophobic interaction with Y15. Based on this docking model, we determined two pharmacophore maps consisted of six or seven features, including three or four hydrogen bonding acceptors, two hydrogen bonding donors, and one lipophilic. We searched a flavonoid database including 23 naturally occurring flavonoids and 10 polyphenolic flavonoids with two maps, and myricetin and GC were hit by map I. Three hydroxyl groups of B-ring in myricetin and gallo moiety of GC formed important hydrogen bonds with hATPase. 7-OH of A-ring in myricetin and OH group of catechin moiety in GC are hydrogen bond donors similar to gallate moiety in EGCG. From these results, it can be proposed that myricetin and GC can be potent inhibitors of hATPase. This study will be helpful to understand the mechanism of inhibition of hATPase by EGCG and give insights to develop potent inhibitors of hATPase.
