  • The effects of accelerated UV radiation on EPDM used for a polymeric insulator were investigated by contact angle, surface voltage decay after corona charging, SEM-EDX, ATR-FTIR and XPS. EPDM occurs as loss of hydrophobicity by UV treatment, which followed by surface cracking and chalking. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated EPDM show that the shorter decay time corresponded to the treated samples with a longer UV exposure time. The surface oxygen and aluminum content were found to increase and carbon decrease, as is observed in EDX analysis. The ATR-FTIR and XPS indicated that C-C and C-H groups decreased and the highly oxidized carbon bonds such as C-O, C=O and O-C=O increase with time. Also, the effects of surface charges on hydrophobicity based on our results is discussed.

  • EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer)/silicone rubber blends were prepared and the influence of a compatibilizer and thermal aging on the properties of the blends was investigated. The blends of which the compositions were varied in the range of 90/10 through $10/90\;wt\%$ were melt mixed by using a Brabender Plasticoder (internal mixer) and were vulcanized by a hot press. The morphology of the vulcanized EPDM/SR blends was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After the thermal Aging for 24, 48, 96 hrs at $100^{\circ}C$ in an air oven, hardness, tensile strength, elongation and contact angle of the blends were investigated. From the result of the morphology, it was confirmed that the domain size of the blends containing the compatibilizer was reduced. As the increase of the thermal aging time, hardness and tensile strength of the blends decreased but elongation and contact angle increased.

  • The effect of the grafting ratio on the mechanical property and adhesion property of the grafted EPDM modified with methacrylic acid (MA) was investigated. The storage modulus of MA-grafted EPDM was maintained higher than that of cross-linked EPDM vulcanizate by sulfur, but it was observed that the storage modulus was decreased at elevated temperature because of the weakened secondary bonding. When the functional group for hydrogen bonding was introduced in EPDM, it had excellent mechanical properties by the aggregate between grafted EPDM molecules and crystallinity of MA. The bonding strength between EPDM and other rubbers was very low because EPDM has nonpolar property and low molecular interaction to others. The bonding strength was increased as increasing grafting ratio and it was excellent enough to break the rubber during the peel test when the grafting ratio was more than 10%.

  • Polymer bushing used for overhead line switch was designed and investigated. Requirements of electrical ratings such as partial discharge, ac withstand voltage, impulse voltage and material properties were proposed in accordance with IEEE 386 and pre-standard (PS) 151-146∼147, 170∼180 of KEPCO. The polymer bushing consists of an internal epoxy bushing and external housing made of EPDM rubber. The rubber housing was molded with mold cone. Therefore, the polymer bushing offers several advantages like light weight, good sealing properties, easy installation and excellent performance in contamination. Electric field analysis was also introduced in order to verify the reliability of the design.

  • After the grafting of methacrylic acid (MA) to ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), a new peak at $1704cm^{-1}$ corresponding to the carboxylic acid group was observed in the infrared (IR) spectrum. This characteristic MA molecule peak grew larger as the MA contents were increased. After casting films were prepared from pure EPDM and MA-grafted EPDM, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements were made the pure EPDM exhibited a melting point of approximately $45^{\circ}C$ while that of the MA-grafted EPDM was $135{\sim}140^{\circ}C$. As the graft ratio of MA increased, the absorbed heat capacity increased at temperatures near $135{\sim}140^{\circ}C$, indicating that an increased amount of MA reacted. Furthermore, owing to the addition of crystalline MA, it is expected that strength of the elastomer will improve as the graft ratio increases, as a result of the increased number of hard segments.

  • Blends of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) and high density polyethylene(HDPE) have been prepared in a roll mill by the process "dynamic curing" where both blending and a crosslinking reaction was carried out simultaneously. As a crosslinking agent, dicumyl peroxide(DCP) was used. Throughout the experimental ranges, the dynamically cured polyblends were shown to be thermoplastic elastomers except highly crosslinked blends of high compositions of EPDM. The increase of melt viscosity was observed as EPDM composition and DCP contents increased. From DSC determinations, the crystallinity decreased with increasing contents of DCP. The tensile strength and elongation at break generally increased with increasing DCP content and increasing HDPE compositions, but highly depended on the combined effects of decreasing crystallinity and increasing crosslinking density.

  • To recycle the waste tire rubber powder, rubber powder composite for waterproof sheet was prepared, and analyzed the effect of the kind of resin and the amount of crosslinking agent on the mechanical property of the composites. The elongation-at-break of the PE composite increased more than 3 times as EPDM was added into rubber composites. As the content of the crosslinking agent increased, the tensile strength of composite increased as well. When recycled polypropylene was used, the increase in composite's tensile strength was more than 3 times. Therefore to use the recycled PP in composite is more effective rather than PP in term mechanical properties.

  • Recently, the polymeric insulators have been accepted in several countries for the outdoor high voltage applications. In comparison with the conventional porcelain, polymeric insulators offer various advantages such as light weight, superior vandal resistance and better contamination performance. The outdoor polymeric insulating materials such as silicone rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) and epoxy are aged such as silicone rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) and epoxy are aged under the various natural environment with the long-term performance in outdoor. In this paper, the effects of UV-under the various natural environment with the long-term performance in outdoor. In this paper, the effects of UV-ray on the surface of silicone rubber were investigated by using the weather-Ometer. The accelerated aging stresses were simulated by UV radiation, high temperature and humidity as well as water spray. These aging characteristics were examined through contact angle measurements, tracking resistance test, FT-IR and SEM/EDS analysis. The experimental results showed that tracking resistance decreases with increase in the UV-ray irradiation period. But the surface of silicone rubber kept hydrophobicity. It is found that the inorganic filler such as)$ Al(OH_3$ improves tracking resistance and the $Tio_2$is very effective in preventing degradation of silicone rubber surface from UV-ray.

  • Grommet is one of the Automotive rubber components and is made from EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene monomer M-class) rubber and the nonlinear hyperelastic material properties of rubber are important to predict the behavior of rubber product. In this study, the stable stress-strain relations were obtained from the uni-axial tension test and the equi-biaxial tension test. Finite element analysis for grommet was carried out and heat aging test for the lifetime prediction of grommet was introduced.

  • Permeability to gases and vapors is an important function in tires, rubber tubes and diaphragms. It mainly depends on the rubber material. Generally, permeability increases in the following order: silicone rubber > NR > EPDM > SBR > NBR > FPM > ECO > IIR. And, for an elastomer permeability is also very much dependent on compounding. Many research works are reported in the area of gas permeability for formed rubber,$^{1-7}$ however, few studies are found for unformed elastomer products. Incorporation of nano-particles, use of thermoplastic elastomers and applying high barrier multilayer coatings are the main approaches to obtain a high barrier elastomeric product. In this paper, barrier article for vehicle is introduced.
