Driving is a complex vigilance task that includes improper lookout, excessive speed and inattention. The primary objective of this research is to detect driver drowsiness so that the driver can be alerted to an impending traffic accident in performance. We developed the automatic detection and warning system during drowsy driving. A drowsiness detection system must be able to monitor driver status and detect the detrimental changes of a driver performance. Eyeblink has been found to be a reliable factor of drowsiness detection in earlier studies. As an additional parameter, we also considered the yawning which often occurs in a low vigilance state and predicts the drowsy state. We used a computer vision method to extract the eyeblink and yawning in the face image sequences. When the drowsy state was detected, the driver was refreshed by alarming device and menthol scent generator after deciding the warning level by fuzzy logic. For the evaluation of our system, we measured the physiological parameters such as EOG and EEG. The results indicated that it is possible to detect and alert the driver drowsiness temporarily or continuously by using our system.
GABA $(\gamma-aminobutyric\;acid)$ is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. For the efficient production of GAB A, a semi continuous cell entrapment system using Lactobacillus brevis GABA 057 was optimized, including the substrate concentration, bead-stabilizing additives, and reaction conditions. The converted monosodium glutamate (MSG), which was added as a substrate for glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), increased from 2% (w/v) to 12% (w/v). The addition of isomaltooligosaccharide to the alginate beads also increased the stability of the entrapped L. brevis and GABA productivity. Consequently, when optimal conditions were applied, up to 223 mM GABA could be produced from 534 mM MSG after 48 h of reaction by using alginate-beadencapsulated L. brevis GABA 057.

Glycosides are important functional materials in foods. Transformation, especially hydrolysis, of the sugar moieties tends to improve the functional properties of the administered glycosides in vivo. Various probiotic bacteria and edible food-grade fungi such as bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, leuconostocs, yeasts, and aspergilli are potential industrial microorganisms to transform glycosides of ginsenosides from ginseng, platycodin saponins from Platycodon grandiflorum, Trignoella foenum-graecum (TFG) saponins, and isoflavones from soybeans and Puerariae radix, respectively, by fermentation or enzymatic reaction. In this review, various transformation pathways bearing potential significance with respect to the changes in structure and function of the various glycosides from the food materials will be introduced. In conclusion, the proper combination of food microorganisms and transformation conditions will improve the functionality and the sensory value and reduce the cytotoxicity of the functional glycosides present in various functional food raw materials.
Bifidobacteria has been suggested to exert health promoting effects on the host by maintaining microbial flora and modulating immune functions in the human intestine. We assessed modulatory effects of the different cell fractions of Bifidobacterium sp. BGN4 on macrophage cells and other immune cells from the spleen and Peyer's patches (PP) of mouse. Cell free extracts (CFE) of the BGN4 fractions induced well-developed morphological changes in the macrophages and increased the phagocytic activity more effectively than other fractions in the mouse peritoneal cells. Nitric oxide (NO) production was significantly reduced by both the cell walls (CW) and CFE in the cultured cells from the spleen and PP. The production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) was eminent in the spleen cells treated with experimental BGN4 cell fractions. However, in the PP cells, IL-6 was slightly decreased by the treatment with the whole cell (WC) and CW, whereas IL-10 was significantly increased by the treatment with the CW and CFE. These results suggest that different types of bifidobacterial cell fractions may have differential immunomodulatory activities depending on their location within the host immune system.
The adhesion of probiotic bacteria to the intestinal mucosa is one of the desirable properties for their colonization in the intestinal tract, where these bacteria constantly compete with other bacteria. The adhesion of different strains of bifidobacteria to Caco-2 cells was compared. Among the strains examined, BGN-4 showed the highest adhesion level and the greatest cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH). No close relationship was found between the adhesion and CSH of the strains. Upon protease and heat treatment, the adhesion of the BGN-4 to the Caco-2 cells decreased significantly. The cells grown at $42^{\circ}C$ showed a lower CSH and self-aggregation levels than cells grown at $37^{\circ}C$. The treatment of EGTA did not have any effect on the adhesion. The degree of adhesion did not differ among the experimental groups in which galactose, mannose, or fucose were added in the adhesion assay mixture. The results suggest that the adhesion of the Bifidobacterium to the epithelial cells may be affected by the composition and structure of the cell membrane and interacting surfaces.

To enhance the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content, the optimized fermentation of soybean with added sea tangle extract was evaluated at 30℃ and pH 5.0. The medium was first inoculated with Aspergillus oryzae strain FMB S46471 and fermented for 3 days, followed by the subsequent inoculation with Lactobacillus brevis GABA 100. After fermentation for 7 days, the fermented soybean showed approximately 1.9 g/kg GABA and exhibited higher ACE inhibitory activity than the traditional soybean product. Furthermore, several peptides in the fraction containing the highest ACE inhibitory activity were identified. The novel fermented soybean enriched with GABA and ACE inhibitory components has great pharmaceutical and functional food values.
To improve the efficiency and economics of national defence, the needs for defence M&S systems are greatly increased, but the lack of interoperability and reusability lowers the level of reliability in the existing simulations models. Recently, many research activities have been performed and some conceptual models, such as CMMS, DCMF, and KAMA, were introduced. However, these models don't support the whole process of defence M&S system development nor provide integrated domain knowledge and up-to-date data. In this paper, we analyzed the analysts' guidances and doctrines, which are the basic ingredients for the simulation system development, and proposed a systematic structure for all the defence M&S stakeholders to share the standardized domain knowledge, modeling algorithm and data. This will be a logical bridge between Mission Space and Simulation Space, and provide substantial data sets to build simulation systems.
