An Evaluation on Use Suitability of Recreation Resource in Natural Parks (자연공원 휴양자원의 이용적합성 평가)

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide useful knowledge for recreation management in natural park(NP) by evaluating use suitability of recreation resource. We had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 385 visitors at 6 of the 73 NP in Korea in 2001, based on stratified sampling method. We have analyzed the data using the multiple regression method. We found that 1) in bivariate analysis, the relationships between use suitability and all the recreation resources are fairly high and statistically significant. The higher the degree of recreation resources, the higher the degree of use suitability. 2) in multivariate analysis, topography, social resource(SR), cultural resource(CR), landscape, smell, color and sound(SCS) have been turned out to be statistically significant at one percent level. 3) the direction of relationship between topography, SR, CR, landscape, SCS and use suitability is same. 4) in relative contribution of the use suitability of recreation resource, level of topography has been turned out to have about 1.05, 1.56, 2.16 and 2.70 times more important than that of SCS, SR, landscape, topography, respectively This results will be used for a criterion for recreation resource evaluation and a settlement of management priority and increasing user's satisfaction.

Application of Simplified Curing Unit for the Extension of Storage Life and Improvement of Physicochemical Quality of Sweet Potatoes during Long-term Storage (간이 큐어링 설비를 이용한 큐어링 처리가 장기간 저장 중 고구마의 품질 개선에 미치는 영향)

  • To evaluate the effect of curing treatment using a newly developed simplified curing unit (SCU) on the physicochemical quality of stored sweet potatoes was investigated for six months. The SCU consisting of a heater, an air circulation fan, exhaust fans, and a humidifying duct was installed in a cold storage room where the harvested sweet potatoes were stacked. During the six days of curing treatment, air temperature and relative humidity in the storage room were set at $32^{\circ}C$ and 90%, respectively. Physical and chemical properties of sweet potatoes were measured at 1-month intervals from the first day of storage. McKinney index showing the incidence and severity of decay was 0.83% in the curing treatment, while that of untreated control was 5.08% over the same storing period. Firmness, soluble solids content, and dry matter content in the cured sweet potatoes were greater than those of untreated control. Moreover, the changes of skin color in uncured potatoes occurred rapidly than cured one which showed delay of skin discoloration during the long-term storage. Results suggest that the SCU treatment improves the physicochemical quality of stored sweet potatoes and extends their storability. Therefore, the SCU can be effectively used for curing treatment of sweet potatoes with a relatively low cost.

Growth and Quality Affected by Light Intensity, Potting Media and Fertilization Level in Potted Orostachys 'Nungyu bawisol' (능유바위솔의 분화 재배시 광도, 분용토, 시비 수준에 따른 생육과 품질의 변화)

  • Proper light intensity, potting media, fertilization level, and shade tolerance were investigated to develop Orostachys (Korean name, Nungyu bawisol) as a potted ornamental plant. The best plant growth was shown at 52% shading. Although plant growth decreased at 82% shading, ornamental value maintained at that shading rate, which indicate that O. 'Nungyu bawisol' has high shading tolerance. At over 90% shading, some of the plants died and showed decolorization and standing erect in leaves, resulting in a big decrease in ornamental value. Potting medium of decomposed granite (DG) : fertilizer-amended media (FAM) : river sand (RS) (6 : 2 : 2, v/v/v) showed the best growth in potted O. 'Nungyu bawisol'. Fresh weight of shoot part was 16 g in DG : FAM : RS (6 : 2 : 2, v/v/v), which was over 2 folds of those at the other medium. Drenching of Hyponex solution diluted by 1,000~2,000 folds 1 time per week brought the highest results in fresh weight, plant width, and runner number. Particularly, fresh weight of shoot part was 13 g higher than that of control (16 g). Leaf color tended to be darkened as concentration of Hyponex solution increased.

Effect of Nonwoven Fabrics Materials on the Growth and Yield of Korea Melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Mak.) (보온부직포 재료가 참외의 생육 및 수량이 미치는 영향)

  • To study the effect of nonwoven fabric materials on growth and yield of korea melon, Medium denier nonwoven fabrics (MDNF), Polyster nonwoven fabrics (PENF) and 12 ounce nonwoven fabric (control) were used. Mean temperature at night was 13.1$^{\circ}C$ at control, 14.7$^{\circ}C$ at MDNF and 13.3$^{\circ}C$ at PENF from Feb. 6${\sim}$7, 2009. Because of higher temperature, early growth of korea melon of MDNF was better than control at 30 days after transplanting. Days required to harvesting (DRH) of control was 89, those of PENF and MDNF were 88, 78, respectively. First harvesting of MDNF was 11 days earlier than control. Harvested fruit of MDNF had higher weight, soluble solid and marketable fruit ratio than control. Yield ratio of control and PENF was 4:3:3 (early:middle:late harvesting season), but MDNF was 5:3:2. Using of MDNF provided earlier harvesting. Total yield of PENF was similar to control, 1,844kg per lOa, MDNF was increased by 9%.

Comparison of Dried Hot Pepper Quality and Production Efficiency by Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 건고추의 품질특성과 생산효율 비교)

  • Hot pepper is a kind of seasoning vegetables, which is a major item in the Korean vegetable market. Since the use of hot pepper is processed into pepper powder, which is a powder form of dried hot pepper, improvement of quality and productivity of dried hot pepper is important. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to suggest proper drying method by comparing the changes of hot pepper powder ingredients considering production cost according to the drying method. As a drying method, we used sun drying and heat drying which are widely used in practice. We also compared the productivity and quality of dried hot pepper by applying a dehumidifying drying method using a dehumidifier. Drying rate of hot pepper was highest of 85.1% at heat drying. Accordingly moisture content of hot pepper powder was lowest of 13.5% at heat drying. The American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) color value, which influenced the coloring of red pepper, showed higher in heat drying and dehumidified drying treatment than the sun drying treatment. The content of capsaicinoids was higher at sun drying treatment than that of at both heat drying and dehumidified drying treatments. The content of sugar was higher at heat drying and dehumidified drying treatment where drying time was relatively short than that of sun drying treatment. Also, there was no significant difference in sugar content between the two treatments. The production cost of dried hot pepper with dehumidified drying was 9.9% more efficient than heat drying. Through this study, it was found that heat and dehumidified drying method were effective in increasing sugar content and coloring of hot pepper powder. In order to improve the capsaicinoid content of red pepper, it is considered that appropriate drying temperature and drying time should be added in the process of heat drying and dehumidified drying.

Floral Characteristics of Labiatae and Umbelliferae Flowers and Insect Pollinators in Korea (우리나라 꿀풀과와 산형과 식물의 화기 구조와 방화 곤충)

  • This research was carried out for revealing the co-relationships between insect-pollinators and the plant species of Labiatae and Umbelliferae, insects visiting in flower and the flowers in Korea, were studied from April 2010 to August 2012. The sum of flower visiting degrees in Labiatae are shown 21 in Hymenoptera, 16 in Lepidoptera, and the lowest 1 in Diptera and Coleoptera, respectively. The sum of flower visiting degrees in Umbelliferae are shown 27 in Diptera, 24 in Hymenoptera, 21 in Coleoptera, and 13 in Lepidoptera, respectively. 17 pollinator species visited the flower of Angelica gigas, next 15 pollinator species did the flower of Agastache rugosa, 13 pollinator species did the flower of Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina. 13 pollinator species foraged on the flower of Peucedanum terebinthaceum. and then 11 pollinator species on the flower of Angelica dahurica. Only 1 pollinator species visited the flower of Clinopodium chinense var. grandiflora and Isodon excisus. Pollinators of Coleoptera and Diptera visit more frequently to the flowers of Umbelliferae than those of Labiatae. Pollinators of Lepidoptera and Diptera visit more frequently white flower than purple one. This study found out that mutualistic relations between plants and insect pollinators in Korea.

Studies on the Nest site Selection and Characteristics of Habitat use of Long-tailed Tits Aegithalos caudatus in Korea (한국에서 번식하는 오목눈이의 둥지장소 선택과 서식지 이용 특성)

  • This study was carried out on Kongju National University and its neighboring area, Mt. Gyeryong national park and Mt. Worak national park in the breeding season of long-tailed tits Aegithalos caudaatus from 2008 to 2012. The result of the inquiry, the nests were found in 15 species of trees, and this result shows me it's not choosy about them. But after having classified them according to the features and analyzed them, long-tailed tits preferred evergreen needleleaf tree and deciduous broad-leaf tree and deciduous bush, especially evergreen needleleaf tree. The concealment rate of long-tailed tits' nests was $11.61{\pm}4.79%]\;4.38{\pm}2.19%$(n=29) in Kongju National University and it's neighboring area, $6.06{\pm}2.31%$(n=43) in Mt. Gyeryong national park and $4.38{\pm}2.19%$(n=32) in Mt. Worak national park. By regional groups, the concealment rates of neighboring nests were almost same, but there are no differences among the areas. The average of the color codes was $26.52{\pm}16.14$(n=32) that those of the nest subtract from those of surroundings of the nest. The nests were procryptic according to their surroundings, and if their nest in a tree were evergreen needleleaf trees, they were made of moss. while if the trees of nest in a tree were yellow because of fungus, made of dried moss, they were yellow, too.

Effects of Paper Bag Coated Calcium on the Calcium Concentration, Lenticel Development, and Quality in 'Chuhwangbae' Pear Fruits (칼슘이 코팅된 봉지 괘대가 '추황배' 과실의 칼슘함량, 과점 발달 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In a pear fruit 'Chuhwangbae' was investigated the effect of the calcium-coated double paper bag on the physical properties of the paper bag, micro meteorological phenomena, and calcium contents in quality of fruit. The calcium-coated paper bag, compared with official paper bags, did not give any effect on light transmission ratio and tensile strength. The change of the inside relative humidity of the paper bag was a little compared with conventional paper bags, but there was no difference in temperature. The contents of the accumulated calcium of the pericarp was remarkably greater than conventional paper bags during the period of 65 days to 160 days after the full bloom, but the flesh remarkably increased at 160 days. The calcium content per concentration of calcium coating greatly increased in 12% of yellow double paper bags and 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp, and in 3% of yellow double paper bags and 6, 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp. As a result of treatment of a radioactive isotope, the amount of accumulated calcium in the pericarp continued until 60 hours after treatment, but there was no difference in the calcium amount between the flesh and no-treatment pericarp. As to the hardness of fruits at the time of harvest, there was no difference in the concentration in case of a yellow double bags. But newspaper double paper bags 6, 12% was significantly difference. Soluble solid remarkably increased in yellow double paper bags 6, 9% and yellow double paper bags 3, 6, 9%. Also, it did not effect on changes of the pericarp, fruit weight and the color of the pericarp.

Influence of Maturity of Fruit and Storage Condition on the Storability of Sweet Pepper in MA Storage (저장 환경과 숙기 정도가 파프리카 과실의 저장에 미치는 영향)

  • The sweet pepper (paprika) is one of the most important exported vegetable crops in Korea. This study evaluated the storability of sweet pepper fruits between 2 cultivars with different maturities under different storage conditions. The sweet peppers ('Special' and 'Fiesta') were grown in a rockwool hydroponic system, and harvested two different maturities: half-maturity and full-maturity levels. The sweet pepper fruits were stored in MA(non-ventilated) and non-MA(ventilated) conditions at 4 and $9^{\circ}C$ for 20 days. The storability of sweet pepper fruit was the highest in $4^{\circ}C$ MA conditions that remained 5% carbon dioxide and 10% oxygen during the storage. The ethylene concentration in MA condition showed $2{\sim}8{\mu}l/l$ regardless of storage temperatures, cultivars and maturities. The fruits packaged with non-ventilated film, showed lower weight loss, and higher firmness, and there was no different about decay ratio compared to the fruits packed ventilated film. The coloration of semi-matured fruit that colored 50% before storage progressed faster in non-ventilated packaging condition at $9^{\circ}C$, but their color did not changed as same as level of full-matured fruit. The electrolyte leakages and respiratory rate that estimated degree of chilling injury was highest in non-MA(ventilated) conditions of 'Special' full matured fruit placed at room temperature for 3 days following storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 20 days. It may be suggested that sweet pepper fruit packed sealed (non-ventilated) film and stored at non-chilling temperature can be maintained better quality for long term storage.

Evaluation of Cold Tolerance of Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) and Diagnosis of Freezing Injury Using Timber Moisture Meter (블루베리의 내한성 평가 및 목재수분계측기를 이용한 동해피해 진단)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate on the freezing tolerance of introduced blueberry cultivars in Korea and to investigate availability of portable timber moisture meter for simple and rapid diagnosis of blueberry-shoot damage by freezing during wintering. Frost tolerance of blueberry cultivars showed big difference that rates of blueberry-shoot death were widely distributed from about 0% to 100% after wintering. Optical density in TTC reduction of blueberry twig treated low temperature was low in order of $-40^{\circ}C$ < $-21^{\circ}C$ < $4^{\circ}C$. Hardiness evaluation of visible injury in the cross-sectional surface color did not agree with that of rates of blueberry-shoot death during wintering. Lowest water content of blueberry stem measured by timber moisture tester during wintering was about 15%. During wintering, water contents of blueberry stems were higher at lower part of tree, but were low at end part of stems, and then when the blueberry grew again for spring, the water content gradually increased to 20~40%. Water content of blueberry stem with freezing injury during wintering decreased to under 5% by desiccation. Therefore it is assummed that the moisture content of blueberry stem injured by freezing during wintering was about under 14%, and it is expected that portable timber moisture meter could be available for rapid diagnosis of blueberry freezing injury in field.
