Effects of PCB Patterns on EMI Measurement in TEM Cell and Proposal of PCB Design Guidelines (TEM 셀에서 PCB 패턴이 EMI 측정에 미치는 영향 및 PCB 설계 가이드라인 제시)

  • Recently, semiconductor integration density enormously increases and its interconnection width is significantly narrowed, which leads to EMI (electromagnetic interference) problems on chip level. Chip manufacturer exploits TEM cell (transverse electromagnetic cell) to measure EMI on chip level, which requires PCB (printed circuit board) for measurement purpose. However, it is often neglected to consider that PCB patterns and other factors can affect on EMI measurement. In this paper, several test patterns are designed for different PCB design variables, and effects of PCB patterns on EMI measurement in TEM cell are analyzed. Based on these analyses, PCB design guidelines are also proposed to minimize the effects on EMI measurements.

  • Lightning current distribution in a building directly hit was studied by using a scaled steel frame structure model. As the test current source, impulse current with the rise time of 10 ${\mu}s$ and sinusoidal current with the frequency of 30 kHz were used to confirm the validity of test results. The current distributions at both horizontal and vertical pillars were measured by using CT. From the test results, the reduction effect for the conductive EMI was verified and a design method reducing the conductive EMI was proposed.

A Study on the Effects of I&C Systems by EMI Generating from Corona Discharge at Transformer Area (변압기 지역 코로나 전자파 간섭에 의한 계측제어설비 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The Electromagnetic Interference(EMI) generating from corona discharge of transformer area can interference the digital Instrument and Control(I&C) systems located nearby transformers. When the potential gradient of the electric field around the conductor is high enough to form a conductive region but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown to nearby objects, the EMI of corona discharge emits with the conducted and radiated noise and it interferences the signals of the I&C systems. Since digital I&C systems have an efficiency and competitive price, the analog I&C systems have been upgraded and displaced with the digital I&C systems but which have less EMI Immunity. There was no assessment to I&C systems by EMI generating corona discharge nearby transformers. When the safety-related I&C systems are installed in plants, the verification of equipment EMI should be done not in site-specific test but in test facilities. There are the need to do the site-specific EMI evaluation of corona discharge nearby transformers. This paper assesses the margin between plant emission limits and the highest composite plant emission of corona. When the non safety-related I&C systems are placed in transformer area, it suggests the appropriate radiated susceptibility level to EMI of corona discharge.

  • Measurement uncertainty assessment is very important in measurement and calibration. RRL provides antenna calibration services for EMI test. Reliability of EMI test depends on accurate antenna calibration. Antenna calibration results have to be accompanied with measurement uncertainty for its better reliability. In the late of 2005, CISPR issued the CISPR/A/644/C which describes the antenna calibration and measurement uncertainty. In this paper, on the basis of CISPR/A/644/C, we provide the measurement uncertainty values for dipole antenna calibration at the Calibration Test Site(CALTS) of Icheon. The antenna calibration method is 3-antenna height-scanning-averaging method, which measures the free-space antenna factor. We also considered all uncertainty sources that can affect measurement results during calibration.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the revised guidance on electromagnetic (EM) interference qualification of Regulatory Guide 1.180 (Revision 2), which is published by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for electromagnetic compatibility qualification for nuclear safety, by comparing it with that of the previous version. We confirmed that the test methods and the acceptance criteria of both CE101 and CE102 tests for conductive emission and RE102 test for radiating emission are changed in the recently revised Regulatory Guide 1.180 (Revision 2). Furthermore, we found that the revised Regulatory Guide 1.180 provides flexibility in the use of alternative methods for EM interference (EMI) qualification, in that a mix of the various base-standards is technically allowed. In addition, the primary revision of the updated Regulatory. Guide 1.180 is that MIL-STD-461G is to be adopted as the latest base-standard, instead of MIL-STD-461E. To evaluate the influence on EMI qualification for nuclear safety due to the endorsement of MIL-STD-461G, we thoroughly analyzed the modifications in the acceptance criteria and test methods for EMI qualification, and then validated the analyzed effect on the EMI qualification, which is caused by the revision of MIL-STD-461, by performing electromagnetic simulation for equipment under RE102 test.

  • A new EMI estimation technique concerned with a PDP system is presented. A physical circuit model is developed which can fairly well describe the AC-PDP system. Then EMIs are determined by exploiting Hertzian dipole antenna model. The simulation results are experimentally verified with the test panel. The AC PDP system was measured in the frequency range of 30MHz ~ 300MHz in a semi-anechoic chamber, according to CISPR 13 code. Thereby, it is shown that the proposed technique can be usefully employed for EMI reduction.

  • The electro-mechanical impedance(EMI) behavior of piezoelectric sensor embedded in cement mortar was investigated to assess the setting times. EMI signal was continuously measured for 12 hours by the PZT sensor embedded in cement mortar with different ratio of sand. As a result, the setting times by the penetration resistance test were accelerated as the sand ratio increased. However, the setting times by EMI sensing technique were delayed as the sand ratio increased.

  • This paper presents the normalized site attenuation characteristics for frequencies below 80 ㎒ using forced resonant type EMI dipole antennas. The coupled integral equations for unknown current distribution are solved by the Galerkin's method of moments with piecewise sinusoidal functions. The results show that the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna for frequencies below 80 ㎒ can be used effectively for the measuring normalized site attenuation. The calculated normalized site attenuation curves for the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna are useful in determining the suitability of open area test sites.

  • In this study, the investigation results of conducted and radiated emission for DC/DC converter circuit applied in electric vehicles are presented. A frequency spreading circuit was used to improve the EMI characteristics of a power converter designed by using MPQ4433 chip. The frequency spreading circuit using a TLV3201 chip was designed and applied to the power converter. A PCB was fabricated based on the EMI minimization procedures and simulated and measured results were presented for the far-field and near-field conducted and radiated emissions using the fabricated circuit. The measurement were done as CISPR 25 standardized test procedures. It is clearly showed that the EMI characteristics were improved 20% in case frequency spreading was applied. The EMI reduction technique using the frequency spreading proposed in this study was first applied to the design of power converter module for automobile. It is expected that the method presented here can be effectively used for EMI improvement in the future.

  • Because the EMI filter is mainly designed by trial and error method, it takes many times to reduce the conducted EMI noise in a power converter. Thus, a newly analytical design procedure is proposed to overcome the problem in this paper. High frequency models of each component are built, md, using the modeling circuits, the filter design is carried out applicable to each mode. Based on the accumulated database for practical components, and the measurement data of EUT with a standard filter, the filler design algorithm is presented. Finally, the validity of the Proposed models and design method is verified through the measurement results.
