Due to the low accuracy of measured data obtained from low-cost GNSS and IMU devices, it was hard to secure the required accuracy of the measured position and heading angle for autonomous navigation which was conducted by a model-scale marine mobility. In this paper, a localization technique using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed for coping with the issue. First of all, a position and heading angle estimator is developed using EKF with the assumption of a point mass model. Second, the measured data from GNSS and IMU, including position, heading angle, and velocity are used for the estimator. In addition, the heading angle is additionally obtained by comparing the LiDAR point cloud with map information for a temporal water tank. The newly acquired heading angle is integrated into the estimator as an additional measurement to correct the inaccuracy in the heading angle measured from the IMU. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is investigated using data acquired from preliminary tests of the model-scale autonomous marine mobility.
Acoustic signal is crucial for the autonomous navigation of underwater vehicles. For this purpose, this paper presents a method of acoustic source localization. The proposed method is based on the probabilistic estimation of time delay of acoustic signals received by two hydrophones. Using Bayesian update process, the proposed method can provide reliable estimation of direction angle of the acoustic source. The acquired direction information is used to estimate the location of the acoustic source. By accumulating direction information from various vehicle locations, the acoustic source localization is achieved using extended Kalman filter. The proposed method can provide a reliable estimation of the direction and location of the acoustic source, even under for a noisy acoustic signal. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed acoustic source localization method in a real sea environment.

This article describes a cooperative localization technique of multiple robots sharing position information of each robot. In case of conventional methods such as EKF, they need to linearization process. Consequently, they are not able to guarantee that their result is range containing true value. In this paper, we propose a method to merge the data of redundant sensors based on constraints propagation techniques on intervals. The proposed method has a merit guaranteeing true value. Especially, we apply the constraints propagation technique fusing wheel encoders, a gyro, and an inexpensive GPS receiver. In addition, we utilize the correlation between GPS data in common workspace to improve localization performance for multiple robots. Simulation results show that proposed method improve considerably localization performance of multiple robots.
High-precision autonomous localization technique is essential for future Mars rovers. This paper addresses an innovative integrated localization algorithm using a multiple information fusion approach. Firstly, the output of IMU is employed to construct the two-dimensional (2-D) dynamics equation of Mars rover. Secondly, radio beacon measurement and terrain image matching are considered as external measurements and included into the navigation filter to correct the inertial basis and drift. Then, extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm is designed to estimate the position state of Mars rovers and suppress the measurement noise. Finally, the localization algorithm proposed in this paper is validated by computer simulation with different parameter sets.

Autonomous navigation of an indoor mobile robot using the global ultrasonic system is presented in this paper. Since the trajectory error of the dead-reckoning navigation grows with time and distance, the autonomous navigation of a mobile robot requires to localize the current position of the robot, so that to compensate the trajectory error. The global ultrasonic system consisting of four ultrasonic generators fixed at a priori known positions in the work space and two receivers on the mobile robot has the similar structure with the well-known satellite GPS(Global Positioning System), and it is useful for the self-localization of an indoor mobile robot. The EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) algorithm for the self-localization is proposed and the autonomous navigation based on the self-localization is verified by experiments.
Global positioning system (GPS) is widely used to measure the position of a vehicle. However, the accuracy of the GPS can be severely affected by surrounding environmental conditions. To deal with this problem, the GPS and odometry data can be combined using an extended Kalman filter. For stable navigation of an outdoor mobile robot using the GPS, this paper proposes two methods to evaluate the reliability of the GPS data. The first method is to calculate the standard deviation of the GPS data and reflect it to deal with the uncertainty of the GPS data. The second method is to match the GPS data to the traversability map which can be obtained by classifying outdoor terrain data. By matching of the GPS data with the traversability map, we can determine whether to use the GPS data or not. The experimental results show that the proposed methods can enhance the performance of the GPS-based outdoor localization.
This paper presents an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) system and operation algorithms for logistic and factory facilities without magnet-lines installation. Unlike widely used AMR systems, we propose an EKF-based loosely coupled fusion of LiDAR measurements and visual markers. Our method first constructs occupancy grid and visual marker map in the mapping process and utilizes prebuilt maps for precise localization. Also, we developed a waypoint-based navigation pipeline for robust autonomous operation in unconstrained environments. The proposed system estimates the robot pose using by updating the state with the fusion of visual marker and LiDAR measurements. Finally, we tested the proposed method in indoor environments and existing factory facilities for evaluation. In experimental results, this paper represents the performance of our system compared to the well-known LiDAR-based localization and navigation system.

In this paper, we research the localization problem of the crawler-type inspection robot for underwater structure which travels an outer wall of underwater structure. Since various factors of the underwater environment affect an encoder odometer, it is hard to localize robot itself using only on-board sensors. So in this research we used a depth sensor and an IMU to compensate odometer which has extreme error in the underwater environment through using Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) which is normally used in mobile robotics. To acquire valid measurements, we implemented precision sensor modeling after assuming specific situation that robot travels underwater structure. The depth sensor acquires a vertical position of robot and compensates one of the robot pose, and IMU is used to compensate a bearing. But horizontal position of robot can't be compensated by using only on-board sensors. So we proposed a localization algorithm which makes horizontal direction error bounded by using kinematics relationship. Also we implemented computer simulations and experiments in underwater environment to verify the algorithm performance.

This paper discusses an autonomous navigation system for urban environments. For the localization of the robot, EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) algorithm is used with odometry, angle sensor, and DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) measurement. Especially in an urban environment, DGPS is often blocked by buildings and trees and the resulting inaccurate positioning prevents the robot from safe and reliable navigation. In addition to the global information from DGPS, the local information of the curb on the roadway is used to track a route when the global DGPS information is inaccurate. For this purpose, curb detection algorithm is developed and implemented in the developed navigation algorithm. Four different types of navigation strategies are developed and they are switched to adapt to different localization conditions according to the availability of DGPS and the existence of the curbs on the roadway. The experimental results show that the designed switching strategy improves the navigation performance adapting to the environment conditions.
