Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Line Contacts Incorporating Bair & Winer's Limiting Shear Stress Rheological Model (한계전단응력형태의 Bair & Winer 리올로지 모델을 사용한 선접촉 탄성유체윤활해석)

  • The Bair & Winer's limiting shear stress rheological model is incorporated into the Reynolds equation to successfully predict the traction and film thickness for an isothermal line contact using the primary rheological properties. The modified WLF viscosity model and Barus viscosity model are also adapted for the realistic prediction of EHD tractional behavior. The influences of the limiting shear stress and slide-roll ratio on the pressure spike, film thickness, distribution of shear stress and nonlinear variation of traction are examined. A good agreement between the disc machine experiments and numerical traction prediction has been established. The film thickness due to non-Newtonian effects does not deviate significantly from the fdm thicknesss with Newtonian lubricant.

  • Onset voltage plays a crucial role in the design of a spray microthruster. This paper presents an analytical electrostatic model to predict the behavior of onset voltage in an array of emitters. The basic idea of this method is to superimpose the electric potentials obtained from each individual emitter in an array of emitters. The results show that if one emitter operates and the other neighboring emitters are dry, the potential required for cone-jet spraying generally increases as the emitter spacing decreases (due to electrical shielding). However at very close spacing the potential can decrease. If all emitters operate at the same time, the phenomenon that even at very close spacing the onset voltage required for cone-jet spraying increases merely as the emitter spacing decreases.

  • This article presents computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of nanoparticle movements and flow characteristics in laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator (ESP) without corona discharge, and for simulation, it uses the commercial CFD program(CFD-ACE) including electrostatic theory and Lagrangian-based equation for nanoparticle movement. For validation of CFD results, a simple cylindrical type of ESP is simulated and numerical prediction shows fairly good agreement with the analytical solution. In particular, the present study investigates the effect of particle diameter, inlet flow rate, and applied electric potential on particle collection efficiency and compares the numerical prediction with the experimental data, showing good agreement. It is found that the particle collection efficiency decreases with increasing inlet flow rate because the particle detention time becomes shorter, whereas it decreases with the increase in nanoparticle diameter and with the decrease of applied electric voltage resulting from smaller terminal electrostatic velocity.

The wake flow control behind a circular cylinder using ion wind (이온풍을 이용한 실린더 뒤의 후류 제어)

  • Many active and passive flow control methods have been studied since decades, but there are only few works about flow control methods using ion wind. This paper presents an experimental study on the wake control behind a circular cylinder using ion wind, a bulk motion of neutral molecules driven by locally ionized air of corona discharge. Experiments are done f3r different electrohydrodynamic numbers - the ratio of an electrical body farce to a fluid Inertial force - from 0 to 2 and for the Reynolds number ranging from $4{\times}10^3\;to\;8{\times}10^3$. Pressure distributions over a cylinder surface are measured and flow visualizations are carried out by smoke wire method. Flow visualizations confirm that ion wind affects significantly the wake structure behind a circular cylinder and pressure drag could be dramatically reduced by the superimposing ion wind.

  • A numerical simulation for particle collection efficiency in a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been performed. Method of characteristics and finite differencing method (MOC-FDM) were employed to obtain electric field and space charge density, and lattice boltzmann method (LBM) was used to predict the Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow according to the ion convection. Large eddy simulation (LES) was considered for turbulent flow and particle simulation was performed by discrete element method (DEM) which considered field charging, electric force, drag force and wall-collision. One way coupling from FDM to LBM was used with small and low density particle assumption. When the charged particle collided with the collecting plate, particle-wall collision was calculated for re-entertainment effect and the effect of gravity force was considered.

  • For chromaticity correction, it is necessary to dispense high viscosity phosphor slurry since it greatly affects the performance of white LEDs. However, it is quite difficult to dispense high viscosity fluorescent materials. In the current study, micro-discharge electrostatic printing has been used for dispensing various high viscosity phosphor slurries. We have achieved dispersions of up to 50 µg using drop on demand (DOD) discharge experiments. The experiments were conducted with different combinations of process variables such as applied voltage, pneumatic pressure, and frequency.

  • The shape of nozzle cross-section plays an important role in stabilizing electrospray jet. The angle of contact line is governed based on the famous Young-Laplace equation. Compared to a round nozzle that has a constant curvature along the orifice, the square nozzle has four square corner edges and four straight edges that hold the meniscus in a different manner and is of interest in this study. By utilizing both square and round capillary nozzle, we examine the effect of nozzle shape in electrohydrodynamic jetting. The ejections were recorded with a high speed camera and analyzed to examine the jetting repeatability based on dynamic movement of meniscus. The result suggests that if the corner edges are not sharp, then its effect on repeatability is also limited.

  • A content-based image retrieval system using MPEG-7 is designed and implemented in this thesis. The implemented system uses existing MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors. In addition, a new descriptor for efficient retrieval of bio images is proposed and utilized in the developed content-based image retrieval system. Comparing proposed CBSD(Compact Binary Shape Descriptor) with Edge Histogram Descriptor(EHD) and Region Shape Descriptor(RSD), it shows good retrieval performance in NMRR. The proposed descriptor is robust to large modification of brightness and contrast and especially improved retrieval performance to search images with similar shapes. Also proposed system adopts distributed architecture to solve increased server overload and network delay. Updating module of client efficiently reduces downloading time for metadata. The developed system can efficiently retrieve images without causing server's overload.

  • EHD(electrohydrodynamic) 증착법을 적용하여 코팅층 표면복합구조제어를 연구하였다. 이 방법을 이용하여 표면구조 제어를 통한 친/소수 코팅층 개발의 제반 조건들을 탐색한다. 화학적으로 안정한 코팅층을 형성할 수 있는 전구체 물질을 용매에 혼합하고, 전구체 물질의 농도를 조절하여 다양한 점도의 용액을 합성하고, 전기장을 적절한 범위에서 변화시키면서 용액의 점도와 전기장의 변화에 따른 코팅층의 표면형상을 체계적으로 조사하고, 주요 공정 변수인 용액 전구체농도와 전기장에 따른 표면형상 변화에 대한 공정 MAP을 조사하여 초친수/초발수 특성을 나타내는 최적 표면구조를 예측한다.

Medical Image Classification and Retrieval using MPEG-7 Visual Descriptors and Multi-Class SVM(Support Vector Machine) (MPEG-7 시각 기술자와 멀티 클래스 SVM을 이용한 의료 영상 분류와 검색)

  • 본 논문은 의료 영상에 대한 효과적인 분류와 검색을 위한 알고리즘을 제안한다. 영상 분류와 검색을 위해서 MPEG-7 표준 기술자인 색 구조 기술자와 경계선 히스토그램 기술자를 사용해 영상들에 대한 특징 값을 추출한다. 이렇게 구해진 특징 값들을 의료 영상의 분류와 검색에 적용해 본 결과 비교적 낮은 성능을 보여줌을 확인하고 앞서 구해진 특징 값들을 교사 학습 방법인 SVM(Support Vector Machine)과 비교사 학습 방법인 FCM(Fuzzy C-means Clustering)에 적용시켰다. 기존 연구에서는 SVM과 FCM의 통합으로 의료 영상에 대한 분류와 검색을 시행하였지만 본 논문에서 실험한 결과 SVM과 MPEG-7 시각 기술자 중에 하나인 EHD(Edge Histogram Descriptor)를 가중치 선형 결합하여 실험한 결과가 더 정확한 분류와 높은 검색 성능을 나타냄을 확인하였다.
