In this study, the CH4/air lean-rich combustion system with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was investigated to explore the potential for lowering pollutant emissions. To achieve this purpose, experiments of lean-rich combustion system with EGR were conducted to measure the changes in the characteristics of the pollutant emission and flame shape with various equivalence ratios and EGR rates. Here, this study was applied to the fuel distribution ratio of 3:1 for the formation of the lean and rich flames. Additionally, the results were compared with $CH_4$/air lean premixed combustion system. The results show that flame shape of lean-rich combustion system was determined by lean and rich equivalence ratios (${\Phi}_L$ and ${\Phi}_R$) and stratified flame was formed with increasing ${\Phi}_R$. According to the pollutant emission characteristics based on experimental results, the NOx and CO emission index (EINOx and EICO) decreased with increasing EGR rate. Especially, in the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rates of EINOx and EICO were approximately 47% and 48% for an EGR rate of 25%, global equivalence ratio of 0.85 and ${\Phi}_L$ of 0.80 compared with lean premixed combustion system (${\Phi}$ = 0.78).
An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of EGR ratio on the combustion, exhaust emissions characteristics and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine with common-rail injection system fueled with biodiesel derived from soybean. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emissions and measurement of size distributions of particulate matter were carried out under various EGR ratio which was varied from 20~60% and the results were compared to those of results without EGR. The experimental results show that ignition delay was extended and maximum value of rate of heat release (ROHR) was decreased according to increasing of EGR ratio. In addition, oxidies of nitrogen ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced but soot emissions were increased under increasing of EGR ratio. However, under higher EGR ratio region, soot was slightly decreased. And then the particulate size distribution shows that high exhaust gas temperature restrain the formation of soluble organic fraction (SOF) which were beyond the accumulation mode (100~300nm) and lead to increase of nuclei mode particles.
Recently, LPG has been considered as more environmental friendly fuel than liquid fuels for vehicles. However because LPLi engine has the strong point that not only increases the volumetric efficiency and cold startability, but also decreases unburned hydrocarbon exhaust emission in warm-up condition, much attention has moved to development of the Liquid Phase LPG injection (LPLi) system from the mixer type LPG engine. To reduce exhaust NOx, this study investigated the effect of EGR with LPLi engine and determined optimized EGR feeding position and distribution. In addition, engine stability, performance, and exhaust emission level were evaluated.

The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wear of cylinder liner piston and piston rings have been investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder four cycle indirect injection diesel engine operating at 75% load and 1600 rpm speed For the purpose of comparison between the rates of two cylinders with and without EGR the recirculated exhaust gas is sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot among exhaust emissions is removed by an intntionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diame-ter) while only the fresh air into another cylinder. These experiments are carried out on the fuel injection at a fixed $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC timing. It is found that firstly the mean wear amount of cylinder liner with EGR is more increased in the measurement positions of the second half than of the first half and the mean wear amount without EGR is almost uniform regardless of measurement posi-tions secondly the wear rates of the first and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR are more than twice but the wear rate of oil ring thickness without EGR is more increased than that with EGR and finally the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR is a little bit increased but the piston hed diameter is rather increased owing to soot adhesion and corrosion wear and espe-cially larger with EGR.
The objective of the current research work is to investigate the usage of biodiesel combined with the use of EGR in order to reduce the emission of all regulated pollutants from diesel engines. A single cylinder, air cooled, constant speed direct injection diesel engine was used for the experimental work and a cold EGR system was developed and fitted to the engine. Concentrations of HCs, NOx, and CO from the exhaust gas along with the smoke opacity were measured. Engine performance parameters such as the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and the brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) were also calculated from the measured data. The results from the present investigation suggest that 25-30% EGR rate could give excellent NOx reduction without any significance penalty on smoke opacity or BSEC under the engine load of up to 40%. Under the full load condition, 15% EGR rate was found to be an option while higher EGR rate resulted in inferior performance and heavy smoke.
The EGR system has been widely used to reduce nitrogen oxides (NO$\_$x/) emission, to improve fuel economy and suppress knock by using the characteristics of charge dilution. However, as the EGR rate at a given engine operating condition increases, the combustion instability increases. The combustion instability increases cyclic variations resulting in the deterioration of engine performance and emissions. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate should be carefully determined in order to obtain the better engine performance and emissions. An experimental study has been performed to investigate the effects of EGR on combustion stability, engine performance,70x and the other exhaust emissions from 1.5 liter gasoline engine. Operating conditions are selected from the test result of the high speed and high acceleration region of SFTP mode which generates more NO$\_$x/ and needs higher engine speed compared to FTP-75 (Federal Test Procedure) mode. Engine power, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are measured with various EGR rate. Combustion stability is analyzed by examining the variation of indicated mean effective pressure (COV$\_$imep/) and the timings of maximum pressure (P$\_$max/) location using pressure sensor. Engine performance is analyzed by investigating engine power and maximum cylinder pressure and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC)
Nitrogen oxide(NOx) emission reductions are required to meet the strict emission regulations for environmental protection. Most of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) system applied to a diesel engine can relatively decrease the NOx at a low cost, but it has a disadvantage in that the PM generation is promoted due to the hot intake air temperature. Thus, high heat exchange efficiency of the EGR cooler is required for an effective removal of NOx. In this study, heat exchange efficiency for various types of heat exchangers used in EGR cooler was measured under same conditions, and determined best heat exchange performance shape depending on type of heat exchanger.
A premixed charge compression ignition engine is experimentally investigated for the reduction of NOx and smoke emissions from diesel engines. In this study, the premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentrations of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. But HC emission was increased with the increase of premixed ratio. Also, when EGR system was applied to the PCCI diesel engine, the effect of EGR rate on the combustion characteristics and the exhaust gas emissions was discussed.
The premixed combustion system applying exhaust gas recirculation was investigated to achieve the low pollutant emission and the high thermal efficiency. In this study, it was studied the effects of EGR on the thermal efficiency, $NO_x$ and CO emissions with various EGR ratios and equivalence ratios. As results, when equivalence ratio was increased, thermal efficiency increased and $NO_x$ and CO concentration increased. When EGR was applied, $NO_x$ and CO concentration decreased and thermal efficiency increased. Especially, in the case of 15% of EGR ratio at 0.85 of equivalence ratio, $NO_x$ and CO concentration will be a smaller than these of a current operating condition of the boiler and thermal efficiency was about 1.7% higher.
In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for direct injection diesel engine. It is tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenate blended fuel which has four kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission and brake specific fuel consumption rate have been investigated. Dimethyl carbonate(DMC) contains oxygen component 53.3% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of carbonate group that the smoke emission of DMC is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and EGR method.
