배기재순환과 기관성능 및 배기조성

  • 기관의 흡기에 배기의 일부를 혼입하는 배기재순환 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation, 약해서 EGR)은 배기중의 NOx 농도를 저하시키는 효과가 있기 때문에 자동차용 기관의 배기정화를 위한 유효한 수단의 하나로 생각된다. 배기가스의 공해성분인 CO, HC NOx 중에서 CO, HC는 실용적인 처 리방법이 각각 여러종류 개발되어 있지만 NOx를 기관으로부터 배출한 후의 단계에서 처리하는 실용적인 방법은 매우 어렵다, 따라서 이와 같은 단계에 있어서는 EGR를 유효하게 이용하는 것이 NOx 저감대책의 지름길이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 EGR를 시행하는 경우, 신기의 흡입량은 EGR에 의하여 제한을 받아 감소하므로 신기의 감소분만큼 출력이 저하하는 것을 막을 도리는 없다. 따라서 장래 대부분의 자동차용기관이 EGR시스템을 정착하게 되면 동력성능을 저하시 키지 않기 위하여 EGR에 상당하는 실린더용적의 증가를 하거나, 어떠한 대책이 필요할 것이다. 그러므로 저자는 장래 EGR시스템을 장착하게될 경우를 고려하는 기관에 EGR을 시해하는 경우, 기관사이클, 연소 및 배기성분 운전 Paramater와 EGR의 관계등에 대하여 기술하고저 한다.

A Study on Exhaust Gas Characteristics of Off-road Mechanical Diesel Engine According to EGR Map Application (Off-Road 기계식 디젤엔진의 EGR Map 적용에 따른 배출가스 특성 연구)

  • Because reducing atmospheric pollution is becoming a serious issue, studies are actively focusing on exhaust gas reduction. This study was conducted to determine the emission characteristics when applying an EGR system, the main approach used for NOx reduction, to an off-road mechanical diesel engine. For the application of the EGR system, the emission characteristics in consideration of the engine conditions were analyzed. The optimum EGR ratio for NOx emission reduction was determined by applying variable EGR conditions for each engine speed condition. Considering the above process, the emission characteristics of the modified EGR condition are compared with those of other conditions (non-EGR and existing EGR condition) in the NRTC mode. Consequently, NOx emission was reduced by around 42 compared with the non-EGR condition when using the modified EGR map.

  • The combustion and exhaust emission characteristics were investigated in an DME fueled HCCI engine. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen and mixed gas, which was composed of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, were used as control parameters of combustion and exhaust emission. As the oxygen concentration in induction air, which was occurred by carbon dioxide, nitrogen and mixed gas, was reduced, the start of auto-ignition was retarded and the burn duration was extended due to obstruction of combustion and reduction of combustion temperature. Due to these fact, indicated mean effective pressure was increased and indicated combustion efficiency was decreased by carbon dioxide, nitrogen and mixed gas. In case of exhaust emission, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide was increased by reduction of oxygen concentration in induction air. Especially, partial burning was appeared at lower than about 18% of oxygen concentration by supplying carbon dioxide. However it was overcome by intake air heating.

  • Exhaust gas emissions from internal combustion engines are one of the major sources of air pollution. And, it is extremely difficult to increase gasoline engine efficiency and to reduce $NO_X$ and PM(particulate matter) simultaneously in diesel combustion. This paper offers some basic concepts to overcome the above problems. To solve the problems, a recommended technique is CAI(controlled auto-ignition) combustion. In this paper, a flame trap was used to simulate internal EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) effect. An experimental study was carried out to find combustion characteristics using homogeneous premixed gas mixture in the constant volume combustion chamber(CVCC). Flame propagation photos and pressure signals were acquired to verify the flame trap effect. The flame trap creates high speed burned gas jet. It achieves higher flame propagation speed and more stable combustion due to the effect of geometry and burned gas jet.

  • A conventional EGR cooler, which is used in an EGR system of an automobile diesel engine, has a low heat-exchange efficiency. To maximize the heat transfer between the exhaust gas and coolant, dimples are formed on the surface of heat exchange tubes. When designing the dimpled EGR cooler, the net heat transfer areas in the conventional and dimpled tube-type EGR coolers are compared. Structural integrity evaluations are also performed by combining finite element analysis with a homogenization method. Subsequently, the process of manufacturing the dimpled tube, i.e., the formation of dimples, edge bending, center v-notch bending, compression, and plasma welding, is established and carried out. Thus, the dimpled EGR cooler is developed, and its performance is verified.

Characteristics of Combustion and Thermal Efficiency for Premixed Flat Plate Burner Using a Porous Media (다공성 소재 종류에 따른 예혼합 평판버너의 연소 및 열효율 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is investigated on the combustion and the thermal characteristics of porous media burners which are many using for a condensing boiler recently. In addition, results of this study will be used the fundamental information to decide the burner type which will be applied to the future development of EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) condensing boiler. Two flat type of burners made of a the metal fiber(MF) and the ceramic(CM) were selected and examined, experimentally. As experimental results, the emitted CO concentration of CM was higher than that of MF. However, the NO concentration of MF was higher than that of CM. The efficiencies of both burners were increased as increasing the burner capacity. While the efficiency of MF was higher than that of CM, regardless of the burner capacity. In the experimental range, MF is appropriated for the burner material and 0.8 of equivalence ratio is an optimal operation condition, regarding of the proportional control, the thermal efficiency and emitted NO and CO concentration based on the regulations of KS B standard and EN 677 standard.

Reduction of Nitrous Oxide Emission by EGR Method on Diesel Engine (디젤엔진에서 배기가스 재순환 방법을 이용한 아산화질소의 배출률 저감)

  • Nitrous oxide($N_2O$) concentration in the atmosphere has been constantly increased by the human activities with industrial growth after the industrial revolution. One of factors to increase $N_2O$ concentration in the atmosphere is the $N_2O$ emission caused by the combustion of marine fuel. Especially, a sulfur component included in marine fuel oils is known as increasing the $N_2O$ formation in diesel combustion. Form this point of view, $N_2O$ emission from a ship is not negligible. On the other hand, Exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) that have thermal, chemical and dilution effect is effective method for reducing the NOx emission. In this study, an author investigated $N_2O$ reduction by using EGR on a direct injection diesel engine. The test engine was a 4-stroke diesel engine with maximum output of 12 kW at 2600rpm, and operating condition of the engine was a fixed load of 75%. The experimental oil was a blend-fuel that were adjusted with sulfur ratio of 3.5%, and EGR ratio of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. In conclusion, diesel fuel that contained 3.5% sulfur component increased $SO_2$ emission in exhaust gas, and increment of EGR ratio reduced NO emission. Moreover, $N_2O$ emission was decreased as over 50% at EGR ratio of 10% and reduced 100% at EGR ratio of 30% compared with $N_2O$ emission of 0% EGR ratio.

  • Low temperature combustion regime for the simultaneous reduction of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and paticulate matter (PM) is demonstrated in single cylinder engine at various operating parameters, such as EGR rate, injection timing, EGR temperature, amount of fuel and swirl rate. Low temperature combustion is accomplished by high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate in this study. Generally, the emission of $NO_x$ almost completely disappears and PM significantly increases in the first decreasing regime of oxygen concentration but after peaking about 10~12% oxygen concentration, PM then decreases regardless of fuel injection quantity. Low temperature combustion regime was extended by low EGR temperature, high injection pressure and low amount of fuel.

  • Even if EGR is known as a technology which dramatically reduces NOx emission, its application is a quite complicate since it affects fuel economy and increase of PM emission. Therefore, it is a very important issue to investigate an optimal EGR rate considering all engine parameters. This research was numerically conducted to predict combustion and emission characteristics with respect to various EGR rates.
