The EFDC model has been simplified to enhance the computing performance in hydrodynamic modeling. Water quality module and unnecessary conditional statements were deleted in subroutine list and memory allocation. The performance of the enhanced model (EFDC-E) was checked by applying EFDC and EFDC-E models to simulating the tidal flow in Mokpo coastal zone. Both two-dimensional models and threedimensional models have been applied and compared. Three-dimensional models showed better simulation results agreeing with observed currents than two-dimensional models. The simulation results of EFDC-E model gave good results agreeing with the simulation results of EFDC model and the observed data. The computing speed of EFDC-E model is improved 3 times faster than that of EFDC model in modeling hydrodynamic flow for real time of 3 days in both 2-dimensional modeling and 3-dimensional modeling. The EFDC-E model can be used widely for hydrodynamic modeling because of improved simulation speed.
EFDC model, which is capable of handling both hydrodynamic and water quality analysis has come to use for many recent studies. In order to assess the applicability of the EFDC model, it was applied to Nakdong river. Hydrodynamic and water quality analysis were carried out for Nakbon GH and HI sections chosen as the area of study with gaged data from 2008 to 2009. The comparison was made between water quality simulation results and observed data over water temperature, COD, TOC, DO, TN and TP. On the contrary, a conversion formula was derived to calculate BOD which the EFDC model cannot directly calculates and it was compared to measured data. In this study, it was determined that the EFDC model well represents the behavior of both hydrodynamics and water quality. However, further research on COD, TOC and accurate conversion of BOD needs to be conducted for efficient application to domestic water quality analysis.

EFDC, ESCORT and MIKE21 models are applied at the Gomso Bay to investigate each models' facilities of tidal flat simulation. Comparisons with observation data show that all models simulate hydrodynamic phenomena and tidal flat well. CPU time and WCM are examined to evaluate the efficiency of the models, and the effects of flooding/drying depth and bottom friction are examined to analyze models' facilities of simulating tidal flat. The EFDC model is considered to be fairly good in accuracy, stability and applicability, it is, however, poor in efficiency and its complexity. While the ESCORT model is superior to the EFDC in simulation of tidal flat, it is inferior to the EFDC in CPU time and simulation of bottom friction. The MIKE21 model is excellent in efficiency, but some numerical noise would be detected at low water, not permitting correction of the model.
This study analyzed a hydrodynamic behavior using the EFDC model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) in the downstream of the Nakdong River in the case of a storm surge and a localized torrential rainfall caused by a major typhoon, and the sea level rise caused by global warming. The study area is selected Gaduk island with the lower boundary and Jindong with the upper boundary, to investigate the total river hydrodynamic behavior including the estuary. In order to verify this numerical model, the calculated results was compared with the observed stage at each gauging point in case of the storm rainfall in 2003 and 2006. From the results, it was shown that the numerical model(EFDC) has high accuracy and is useful in simulating more various cases.
The flow of the middle and downstream of the Yeongsan River is stagnant by two weirs of Seungchon and Juksan and the estuary dam and maintained in freshwater. In this study, the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code-National Institute of Environment Research(EFDC-NIER) model was applied to the Yeongsan River to simulate water flow, temperature, and salinity stratification. The EFDC-NIER model is an improved model which can simulate multi-functional weirs operation, multiple algal species, and the vertical movement mechanism of algal based on the EFDC model. The simulation results for the water level, water temperature, velocity, and salinity reproduced the observed values well. The mean absolute error(MAE) of the model calibration in the annual variations of the water level was 0.1-0.3 m, water temperature was 0.8-1.7 ℃, velocity was 4.5-7.1 cm/sec, and salinity was 1.5 psu, respectively. In the case of scenario simulation for the full opening of the estuary dam, the water level of the estuary dam was directly impacted by the tide so it was predicted to rise - 1.35 m to 0.2 m on average sea level. The velocity was also predicted to increase from 2.7 cm/sec to 50.8 cm/sec, and the flow rate to increase from 53 ㎥/sec to 5,322 ㎥/sec.
The Yeongsan river estuary has a serious water quality problem due to the water stagnation and it is imperative to predict the changes of water quality for mitigating water pollution. EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) model was mainly utilized to predict the changes of water quality for the estuary. The EFDC modeling normally accompanies the large volume of modeling output. For checking the spatial distribution of the modeling results, post-processing for converting of the output is prerequisite and mainly post-processing program is EFDC_Explorer. However, EFDC_Explorer only shows the spatial distribution of the time series and this doesn't support overlay function with other thematic maps. This means the impossible to the connection analysis with a various GIS data and high dimensional analysis. Therefore, this study aims to develop a post-processing system of a EFDC output to use them as GIS layers. For achieving this purpose, a editing module for main input files, and a module for converting binary format into an ASCII format, and a module for converting it into a layer format to use in a GIS based environment, and a module for visualizing the reconfigured model result efficiently were developed. Using the developed system, result file is possible to automatically convert the GIS based layer and it is possible to utilize for water quality management.
This study aims to test the feasibility of combined use of EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) hydrodynamic model and WASP7.3 (Water Quality Analysis Program) model to improve accuracy of water quality predictions of the Yongdam Lake, Korea. The orthogonal curvilinear grid system was used for EFDC model to represent riverine shape of the study area. Relationship between volume, surface and elevation results were checked to verify if the grid system represents morphology of the lake properly. Monthly average boundary water quality conditions were estimated using the monthly monitored water quality data from Korean Ministry of Environment DB system. Monthly tributary flow rates were back-routed using dam discharge data and allocated in proportion to each basin area as direct measurements were not available. The optimum number of grid system was determined to be 372 horizontal cells and 10 vertical layers of the site for 1 year simulation of hydrodynamics and water quality out of iterative trials. Monthly observed BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the lake were used for calibration of WASP7.3 model. This study shows that EFDC and WASP can be used in series successfully to improve accuracy in water quality modeling. However, it was observed that the amount of data to develop inflow water quality and flow rate boundary conditions and water quality data inside lake for calibration were not enough for accurate modeling. It is suggested that object-oriented data collection systems would be necessary to ensure accuracy of EFDC-WASP model application and thus for efficient lake water quality management strategy development.
For the lake case, the detention phenomenon of water body occurs and stays for a long time. Especially, following the layer of water depth direction, the lake body and water quality problems are different from the water quality of river. So according to time, the stream and water quality can be simulated by the 3-Dimensional Model, which can divide water layer for reservoir or lake. The water quality simulation result will become more reliability. For this study, the 3-Dimension Model - EFDC was used to simulate water quality of Unam reservoir in the Sumjin Dam. The HEC-GeoHMS and HEC-HMS Rainfall - Runoff Model based on GIS were used to estimate long-term runoff, and input data was constructed to the observed water level, meteorological data, water temperature, T-N and T-P. In order to apply the EFDC model, water depth was divided into 3 layers and 5,634 grids were extracted. After constructing the grid net, the water quality change of Unam reservoir in time and space was simulated. Overall, long term runoff simulation reflected the actual observed runoff well, through the water quality simulation, according to the pollution factors, the behavior characteristics can be checked, and the simulated water quality can be properly reflected. The function of EFDC has been confirmed, which water quality can be properly simulated. In the near future, to establish countermeasures for Intake Facilities of Watershed and Management, this support which some basic tools can be applied is in expectation.

Nakdong River was recently dredged with multi-functional weirs construction. Therefore, the depth was deepened and the lag time also increased. As a result, stratification occurred in some sections with deep water depth, and it also caused the increase of algal bloom phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to evaluate reproducibility of stratification in the Nakdong River by applying the EFDC model, which is a three-dimensional hydraulic and water quality analysis model proving the reproducibility of stratification phenomena in reservoirs and estuaries. In order to reproduce the Nakdong river water temperature and DO stratification, EFDC model was constructed in the downstream part of the Nakdong river and sensitivity analysis was performed on key parameters sensitive to stratification. Sensitivity analysis was used to reproduce stratification by selecting optimal parameters. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the analysis of various destratification scenarios.

Applicabilities of two 3-D hydrodynamic models on Chungkye Bay in which tidal flats are well developed were examined. Both EFDC model and ESCORT model with the ${\sigma}$-coordinate showed fairly good results. However, their efficiencies were lowered especially on the tidal flats due to dense vertical grids. This inefficiency could be overcome by using the z-coordinate of the ESCORT model keeping similar accuracy.
