  • BACKGROUND: During the winter, the use of deicers was rapidly increased for reduction of traffic accidents as well as injuries in Korea, whose components are largely comprised of calcium chloride and sodium chloride. Recently, to reduce the adverse effects of chloride-deciers such as pollution of water and soil, and decrease of agricultural productivity, the attention of eco-friendly deciers have been increased. This study aimed to investigate biological effects of magnesium chloride deicer (PC-10) and organic acid deicer (EFD-1) against wheat, barley, and spinach. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effect of two deciers, PC-10 and EFD-1 on the seed germination and growth of wheat, barley and spinach. EFD-1 showed higher suppression of the germination than PC-10 among tested crop seeds. In demage index of the seedlings of the crops, there was no symptoms in spinach such as spotting and color change of leaves. EFD-1 showed much stronger inhibitory effect on the germination of tested crop seeds than PC-10 when crops were exposed continuously to tested deciers in soils. The growth and shoot and root in examined crops was relatively higher in PC-10 treatment than in EFD-1 treatment when compared to the control. The biomass decrease was found in all examined conditions of deciers. PC-10 showed 23-35% reduction of biomass whereas EFD-1 exhibited 39-84% loss in all examined crops at over 2% concentration. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the effects of deicers used in this study by inputting into soil against growing tested crops cause the reduction of germination of seeds, growth, and biomass compared to the control.

  • EFD-CFD Comparison Workshop was proposed based on the drag prediction workshop and high lift prediction workshop of AIAA. This workshop is organized to escalate the levels of wind tunnel test and computational fluid dynamics and to escalate the level of domestic aerodynamic technology through the collaboration of both areas. For three benchmark cases of which wind tunnel test results are available, comparison workshops have been held since 2015.

  • This paper proposes a private display that can adjust viewing angles by using an electric-field-driven (EFD) LC Lens. The EFD LC Lens design and simulation were analyzed by using the Extended Jones Matrix Method. The conventional method for attaching a private film to the display was difficult. In order to solve this problem, in this study, by using the EFD LC Lens, we devised a method that can view images more conveniently. We analyzed the luminance and illumination of the optical viewing distance by using the Extended Jones Matrix Method. We also measured the intensity of the viewing angles. The simulation attached the EFD LC Lens to the 14" Full HD RGB stripe wide panel. We calculated the relative luminance distribution and the luminance distribution on the viewing angle of the image at the optimum viewing distance of 60 cm, using the EFD LC Lens and the lenticular lens. The proposed method could be used to design private displays that can adjust the viewing angle of the EFD LC Lens.

  • Recently, various damages such as corrosion of rebar, scaling on concrete pavement and environmental deteriorations caused by using the chloride-containing deicer have been reported. To solve these problems, several substitute deicers have been developed by other researchers. However, studies on evaluation of performance for the developed deicers have been limited in the basic laboratory testing. It is necessary to establish the resonable and systematic test procedure for evaluating the deicing performance. In this study, rational and practical test methods were set up through literature review and deicing performance of Eco-Friendly Deicer(EFD), which is a kind of low chloride-containing deicer developed by our research group, was evaluated by the presented test methods. As results of the laboratory tests, initial deicing performance of EFD was similar with that of Pre-Wetted Salt(PWS) which has been used in highway deicing and it was verified by executed field tests in twice that EFD had passable deicing performance compare with PWS.

  • Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) is being developed to do maritime survey and maritime surveillance at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean engineering (KRISO). The goal is that USV should be operated at the maximum speed of 45 knots and it should be operated at sea state 4. Therefore the planing hull of USV should be excellent in resistance performance and manoeuvring performance. It is needed to check its performance using Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or analytic method before designing the hull. In this study, resistance performance was analyzed by EFD and CFD. EFD with heave and pitch was performed at high speed towing system in Seoul National University. CFD was performed using SNUFOAM based on openFOAM with dynamic mesh to calculate running attitudes. The results of CFD were compared with EFD results. The results of CFD were resistance, running attitudes and wave height. The flow distribution and pressure distribution were also analyzed. The results of numerical resistance was under estimated than EFD. Even though the results of CFD have a slight limitation, it can be successfully used to estimate the resistance performance of planing hull. In addition it can be used as a supplement for EFD results.

  • This article presents an effect of deicer such as $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) and EFD(Eco-Friendly Deicer) composed by organic acids on the survival and growth of plant. Pine and bush clover which are main natural species on the road side, and young radish and kidney bean which are cultivation species used in this test that responses of survival and growth were analyzed as grade concentration of deicers. Bush clover showed the most sensitive survival response among 4 species to the deicer. Pine growth didn't have statistical significance as the kind of deicers and concentration variation, but growths of bush clover and kidney bean showed growth inhibition in concentration more than 3% of $CaCl_2$ and EFD1. The results of survival and growth for $CaCl_2$(calcium chloride) demonstrated that young radish and pine are tolerant species and bush clover and kidney bean are sensitive species. Although EFD1 manufactured by chemical showed the negative effect on the survival and growth of plants, EFD2 made with waste compost was confirmed that it has the positive influence to the survival and growth of the both sensitive and tolerant plant species for chloride.

  • Modeling and simulation(M&S) method are used to quantify the weapon effectiveness. The weapon effectiveness of artillery shells was also partially studied, but there was a lack of research on the effects of the choice of charge. Therefore, this paper presents an artillery shell's EFD(Expected Fractional Damage) calculation model based on the charge and identifies differences in the weapon effectiveness of 3D building targets according to the selection of the charge. First, the input data of the calculation model was collected and a required number of shoots was calculated to achieve the desired effects using the proposed model. Finally, a paired sample t-test was conducted to verify the proposed model.

  • In order to use missiles more effectively, assessing methodologies was advanced about weapon effects for various target types. We tried to find out the most effective analysis methodologies for missiles to attack 3 dimensional building target's and analyzed adaptedness as an assessing methodology. There are EFD (Expected Fractional Damage) and SSPD (Single Sortie Probability of Damage) methodologies to assess building target damage. In order to calculate effectiveness we used input parameter such as size of the target and CEP (Circular Error Probable), MAE_bldg (Mean Area of Effects for Building) of weapons and impact angle as encountering condition between the target and the missile. We compared EFD and SSPD, in order to analyze adaptedness as a effective methodology by CEP and MAE. The result was that EFD methodology was more adaptive to assess 3 dimensional building targets by missile systems than SSPD.
