Two-step neural network is designed for determining electrical discharge machining parameters in low erosion. The first neural network, which is used as a classification network, checks whether the current conditions are appropriate to electrical discharge machining in low tool erosion. If the conditions are appropriate to EDM in low erosion, suitable EDM parameters are generated by the second neural network. Theoretically known EDM conditions are produced and also utilized for training the second neural network. The trained neural network is tested how well suitable EDM machining conditions are generated under unknown machining situations Experimental result shows that the proposed two-step neural network approach could be effectively used for determining EDM parameters in low tool erosion. The results also have a practical contribution to EDM area in that it could be applied for maintaining low tool wear as well as obtaining maximum machining rates simultaneously.
This study investigates the non-traditional manufacturing process of dry wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) in which liquid dielectric is replaced by a gaseous medium. Wire EDM experiments of thin workpieces were conducted both in wet and dry EDM conditions to examine the effects of spark cycle (T), spark on-time ($T_{on}$), thickness of work pieces, and work material on machining performance. The material removal rate (MRR) in the dry wire EDM case was much lower than that in the wet wire EDM case. In addition, the thickness of workpiece and work-material were found to be critical factors influencing the MRR for dry EDM process. The relative ratios of spark, arc and short circuit were also calculated and compared to examine the effectiveness of processes of dry and wet wire EDM.
This paper addresses the design and fabrication of desktop die-sinking dry electrical discharge machining (EDM) system and its experimental performance analysis. The developed desktop dry EDM machine has the horizontal configuration with the size of $300{\times}200{\times}260mm$. The experimental performance analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of EDM conditions and dielectric gas temperature on the surface roughness of EDMed slots and number of EDM sparks. The experimental results demonstrate that low feed rate and large electrode displacement are good for better surface roughness and more number of EDM sparks. In addition, low temperature of dielectric gas results in better surface roughness.
3D formed Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) and hole EDM were conducted for die and mold manufacturing with electrodes which were made by mechanical machining and wire EDM. It is difficult to machine the hardened material after heat treatment and quenching with traditional machining. The only method of machining hardened material is die-sinking EDM. In this research, hole EDM was conducted for heat-treated cold-worked tool steel (SKD11) for use as a die material. The EDM surfaces were analyzed by pulse-on time and peak current of EDM current, according to the machining conditions of EDM. The EDM surface profiles were affected by the peak current. The contribution of each factor is peak current (91.63%) and pulse-on time (0.93%). The best surface roughness was obtained with a $130{\mu}s$ pulse-on time and a 14.2 A peak current. With uniform EDM processing, the surface deteriorated with increasing pulse-on time and peak current. The thickness of the solidified layer induced by EDM was increased as the peak current, crater shapes, and erupted shapes of EDM surfaces were increased. Therefore, microcracking gaps induced by surface tension were increased.
From the experimental study of Wire-Cut EDM of die-material(SKD-11), machining characteristics such as machining rate, surface roughness and hardness have been observed and evaluated under the conditions varing pulse on time, pulse off time, peak voltage after fixing other conditions. It was found that various operating conditions have significant influences on machining rate, surface roughness. Hardness of workpiece was unaffected by operating conditions.
The material removal mechanism of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process has been studied for several decades. However, understanding of the material removal mechanism is still a difficult problem because the mechanism involves complicated physical phenomena including plasma. Especially, for a micro-EDM process, due to the influence of the debris that is generated during the machining process, quantitative modeling of EDM becomes more complex. To understand better the effects of the debris in the micro-EDM process experimentally, a new approach has been introduced in this study. Using a specially designed workpiece holder, the debris generated during the EDM with various process conditions has been collected. Then, using a simulated environment using micro-sized metal powders, the influence of the debris during the single EDM discharge has been observed. The effects of EDM process parameters on the debris size and product quality are discussed.
This paper describes the NC simulator system for Wire-cut electrodischarge machining. Electrodischarge Wire-cut machining is applicable to all materials including metals, alloys, and most carbides. Although CAM system generate the NC code considering electrodischarge conditions, incorrect Wire-cut tool path bring about fatal results. The simplest way of simulating a EDM process is to display the trajectory of Wire-cutter location by line segments. With this kind of simulation, the programmer can get a general idea about whether the wire is moving as planned but cannot locate gouging or excess material because only the wire location will be seen, not the changes in the workpiece as it is machined. The ideal way of simulating the EDM process is to display the solid model of the workpiece as it is machined. Therefore we propose the ideal NC simulator system for Wire-cut EDM.
Titanium alloy conducted in this experimental study has superior corrosive resistant and is mainly used in aerospace, automotive and petro-chemical industries. It is also treated with important materials of domestic goods due to improvement of the standard of living. In this study specimens were processed in the wire EDM after annealing, solution treatment and aging. Results were obtained through repeated experments of main rough process and finish process with the change of process parameters. Processing characteristics such as surface hardness, surfaces roughness, shape of processed surface and components were measured. The results confirmed that the above mentioned elements were improved in accordance with the number of process. Therefore, the optimal wire EDM condition in accord with processing characteristics is proposed in this experiment.

The dental profession is currently experiencing a technology explosion. Processes are being replaced by modern, inexpensive, and precise techniques that can be used to solve complex restorative problems. Electrical discharge machining(EDM, known as spark erosion in Europe) is a nonconventional, industrial technique that has application in dentistry. EDM may be defined as a metal removal process using a series of sparks to erode material from a workpiece in a liquid medium under carefully controlled conditions. EDM is recently adopted in the dental laboratory to fabricate precision attachments, hybrid tele-scope crowns, Ti-ceramic crowns. EDM has also been used to achieve a passive precision metal-to-metal fit between the substructure bar and the removable superstructure and to correct the fit of implant retained restorations. In this article, a brief history and explanation of EDM is discussed and a description of the use of this process for fabricating attachments and crowns or for correcting the fit of cast restorations is presented.
