  • Recently, the needs of machining technologies of very small parts have been increasing with advent of micro-revolution. These technologies have mostly used the method applied to semi-conductor production process such as LIGA, etc. But they have serious difficulties to settle down in terms of workpiece materials, machining thickness, 3-dimensional structure. Therefore. mciro-machining technology using EDM(Electrical Discharge Machining) was proposed. It is very difficult to machine the micro-parts (microshaft, microhole) using conventional machining. Micro-machining using BDM can machine the micro-parts easily because it requires little machining force. This MEDM(Micro-EDM) need the capabilities to move a electrode and control a discharge energy precisely, and the gap control strategy to maintain the optimal discharge condition is necessary. Therefore, in this study, the new EDM machine with high precision motion stage and high-performance EDM device was developed. Using this MEDM machine, we have machined microshaft and microhole with various shapes and sizes.

  • Micro electrical discharge machining (EDM) and micro electrochemical machining (ECM) were studied for the fabrication of micro structures. Micro EDM has been used to machine micro structures from metals. However, since the tool wear is inevitable during the machining, the tool wear is drawback for the precision machining. Micro ECM is also used for micro machining and produces better surface quality than that of micro EDM. Moreover, since tool electrodes are not worn out, micro ECM is suitable for the precision micro machining. However, the machining rate is lower than that of micro EDM. In this paper, therefore, the hybrid machining process which uses micro EDM as roughing and micro ECM as finishing is introduced. By using this hybrid machining, a hemisphere with $100\;{\mu}m$ radius was fabricated and the efficiency of the process was investigated experimentally.

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most extensively used non-conventional material removal process. The recent trend in reducing the size of product has given micro EDM a significant amount of research attention. Micro EDM is capable of machining not only micro holes and micro shafts as small as a few micrometers in diameter but also complex three dimensional micro cavities. But, longitudinal tool wear by electrical discharge is indispensable and this affects the machining accuracy in micro EDM process. Therefore, newly developed tool wear compensation strategy called round trip method is suggested and verified by experiment. In this method, machining depth of cut, overlap effect and critical travel length are also considered.

  • This paper has comparatively analyzed the characteristics of the machined surface of a specimen made by machining Die Steel STD11 and a specimen obtained by W-EDM steel. If a press die is manufactured through W-EDM, products of shapes that cannot easily be made through machining can be manufactured easily. However, the life of the press die is significantly reduced compared with the press die made through machining. This is believed to be caused by the deformed layer that has occurred on the surface of the press die that was made through W-EDM. The roughness of the 2 specimens was measured, and it was learned that the distribution of the roughness of the specimen made through the 1st W-EDM was rough.

  • Micro-EDM is generally used far machining micro holes, pockets, and 3-D structures. For micro-EDM, first of all, micro-electrode fabrication is needed and WEDC system is proposed for tool electrode fabrication method. When tool electrode is fabricated using WEDG system, its characteristics are under the control of many EDM parameters. Also relations between the parameters affect electrode fabrication. In this study, experiments are carried out to analyze effects of EDM parameters about electrode surface integrity on micro-electrode fabrication. Experimental method and analysis are used to experimental design method. Factors used in experiments are composed of capacitance, resistance, pause time, wire feed rate, spindle rotating speed. As a result of experiments, capacitance and resistance affect electrode surface.

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is one of the most widespread nonconventional machining processes. Recently, a low-power micro-EDM process was introduced using a cylindrical electrode. Since its development, micro-EDM has been applied effectively to micromachining, and because the device setup for this process is simple, it is suitable for a microfactory that minimizes machines to fabricate small products economically in one system. In the EDM process, however, the electrode is also removed along with the workpiece. Therefore, the electrode shape and length vary as machining progresses. In this paper, a control method using a high speed realtime voltage measurement is proposed to regulate the rate and amount of material removed. The proposed method is based on the assumption that the volume of the workpiece removed in a single discharge pulses is nearly constant. The discharge pulses are monitored and controlled to regulate the amount of material removed. For this purpose, we developed an algorithm and apparatus for counting the number of discharge pulses. Electrode wear compensation using pulse number information was applied to EDM milling in a microfactory, in which a slight tilt of the workpiece may occur. The proposed control method improves the machining quality and efficiency by eliminating the inaccuracies caused by electrode wear and workpiece tilt.

  • Ischemia/reperfusion-induced myocardial injury is the main cause of acute myocardial infarction. Dendropanax morbifera $L{\acute{e}}veille$ has been used in traditional medicines for the treatment of various diseases such as headache, infectious diseases, and general debility. However, the effect of extract from D. morbifera (EDM) on myocardial ischemic injury is still unknown. In this study, the effects of EDM on neonatal rat cardiomyocytes with hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury were investigated. The viability of cardiomyocytes with H (30 min)/R (1 h) decreased; however, treatment with EDM significantly inhibited H/R injury-induced cardiomyocyte death. Further, we observed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and intracellular calcium concentration ($Ca^{2+}{_i}$) were significantly reduced in EDM-treated cardiomyocytes compared with that in H/R-injured positive control. In addition, western blotting results showed that EDM attenuated abnormal changes of RyR2 and SERCA2a genes in hypoxic cardiomyocytes. These results suggest that EDM ameliorates ROS generation and $Ca^{2+}{_i}$ homeostasis to prevent dysregulation of calcium regulatory proteins in the heart, thereby exerting cardioprotective effects and reducing hypoxia-induced cardiomyocyte damage, which verifies the potential use of EDM as a new therapeutic agent for the treatment of myocardial ischemic injury.

  • In this paper, electrical discharge machined (EDM) surfaces machined with various machining parameters are characterized and simulated. Three-dimensional surface topography of EDM surfaces are measured by a stylus instrument. Surface topography is characterized with auto-correlation coefficient and height probability density functions. Then, EDM surfaces are modeled and computer-simulated by using the non-causal 2-D auto-regressive model. Simulation results show that EDM surfaces are characterized well by a few parameters.

  • In this study, the characteristics of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) with the electrode materials were investigated. EDM experiments have been carried out on electrodes with eight different copper-based and graphite-based materials. From the results, the copper-based electrodes showed excellent surface roughness than the graphite-based electrodes. But graphite based electrodes have advantages in economic aspects.
