Purpose: This study was done to compare prenatal education programs for anxiety and labor efficacy in third trimester women. Method: The subjects were 95 primigravida who attended a prenatal education program at H and B hospital in Kyounggi province and a health center in Chungbuk province and in the Incheon metropolitan area. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, and trait and state anxiety, and labor efficacy were measured. The data was analyzed by frequency, mean, and paired t-test. Result: In this study, there was a high level of anxiety in the primigravida. After the program, only state anxiety was decreased significantly at the attendants of the health center. Labor efficacy was a little increased, but this was not significant. Anxiety was increased and labor efficacy was decreased in the attendant of a private hospital. Conclusion: These education programs were not so effective to decrease anxiety and to increase labor efficacy. For on effective program to increase labor efficacy, it is necessary to standardize prenatal education program content and to revise it to decrease state anxiety closer to delivery. It is necessary to discover why these programs were not effective.

This study was carried out for the purpose of obtaining the basic data for identifying the origin of amethyst. For this, the three dimensional shapes of inclusions contained in various amethyst were observed with Stereo Zoom microscope. The shape and chemical composition of cross section of solid inclusion and the chemical composition of evaporite were investigated by SEM-EDS. The evaporite is made from evaporating of liquid inclusion which is flowed out of amethyst sample by decompressing. Lastly, The trace mineral composition of amethyst was investigated by ICP-AES after digesting the amethyst sample with HF-$H_2SO_4$ solution.
The sol-gel methodology has been applied successfully in the synthesis of a novel hybrid coating based on dimethoxymethyl-n-octadecylsilane precursor. The newly synthesized parent coating was functionalized further with two commercially-available corrosion-inhibitive pigments Moly-$white^{(R)}$ 101-ED and Hfucophos $Zapp^{(R)}$, applied to mild steel panels, and immersed continuously in 3.5% NaCl electrolytic solution for 288 h. The corrosion protection performance of the prepared functional coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarization techniques. An enhancement in the barrier properties has been revealed from the electrochemical characterization data of the hybrid films, in comparison with untreated mild steel substrates following long-term immersion in 3.5% NaCl. The corrosion resistance properties of the newly developed coatings over mild steel substrates found to be largely dependent on the type of the loaded inhibitive pigment in which the Moly-white inhibitor has a positive impact on the corrosion protection performance of the parent coating, while an opposite behavior was observed upon mixing the base polymeric matrix with the commercially-available Zapp corrosion inhibitor.
This study aimed to evaluate effects of 800 W microwave irradiation for 2, 4 and 6 min on chemical composition, antinutritional factors, ruminal dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradability, and in vitro CP digestibility of canola seed (CS). Nylon bags of untreated or irradiated CS were suspended in the rumen of three bulls from 0 to 48 h. Protein subfractions of untreated and microwave irradiated CS before and after incubation in the rumen were monitored by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Microwave irradiation had no effect on chemical composition of CS (p>0.05). There was a linear decrease (p<0.001) in the phytic acid and glucosinolate contents of CS as irradiation time increased. Microwave irradiation for 2, 4 and 6 min decreased the phytic acid content of CS by 8.2, 27.6 and 48.6%, respectively. The total glucosinolate contents of CS microwave irradiated for 2, 4 and 6 min decreased by 41.5, 54.7 and 59.0% respectively, compared to untreated samples. The washout fractions of DM and CP and degradation rate of the b fraction of CP decreased linearly (p<0.001) as irradiation time increased. Microwave irradiation for 2, 4 and 6 min decreased effective degradability (ED) of CP at a ruminal outflow rate of 0.05 $h^{-1}$ by 4.7, 12.3 and 21.0%, respectively. Microwave irradiation increased linearly (p<0.001) in vitro CP digestibility of ruminally undegraded CS collected after 16 h incubation. Electrophoresis results showed that napin subunits of untreated CS disappeared completely within the zero incubation period, whereas cruciferin subunits were degraded in the middle of the incubation period (16 h incubation period). In 4 and 6 min microwave irradiated CS, napin subunits were degraded after 4 and 16 h incubation periods, respectively, and cruciferin subunits were not degraded untile 24 h of incubation. In conclusion, it seems that microwave irradiation not only protected CP of CS from ruminal degradation, but also increased in vitro digestibility of CP. Moreover, microwave irradiation was effective in reducing glucosinolate and phytic acid contents of CS.

DNA damage including base modifications, loss of base and breaks in DNA strands can occur by exposure to irradiation, smoking and several components of food. Unrepaired DNA damage is known to lead to cellular dysfunction, cell death, cancer, and other diseases such as arteriosclerosis and diabetes. The protective effect of garlic on oxidative stress induced DNA damage has been reported recently. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of garlic extracts prepared by different processing methods (raw garlic extracts, RGE; grilled garlic extracts, GGE; pickled garlic extracts, PGE) on leukocytic DNA damage using comet assay. Human leukocytes were incubated with ethanol and methanol extract of garlic at various concentrations (1, 5, 10, 50 ${\mu}g$/mL), followed by oxidative stimuli (200 ${\mu}M$$H_2O_2$ or 200 ${\mu}M$ 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE)). The methanol and ethanol extracts of RGE, GGE, and PGE showed inhibitory activities of DNA damage induced by $H_2O_2$ or HNE. Especially methanol extract of RGE ($ED_{50}$; 13.3 ${\mu}g$/mL) had a higher antigenotoxic effect on $H_2O_2$ induced DNA damage than those of GGE (23.5 ${\mu}g$/mL) or PGE (24.5 ${\mu}g$/mL). HNE induced DNA damage tended to be effectively inhibited by the lower concentration of all garlic extracts. Therefore, garlic might have protective effects against oxidative DNA damage regardless of processing methods (raw, grilled, pickled) which are the general consumed forms of garlic in Korea.
The prism spectrometer is a standard device for the measurement of refractive index; it is used in undergraduate laboratories. Typically, however, lots of attention is required in the alignment, and the accuracy of the obtained refractive index is not so high in spite of the durability of the device. The maximum and minimum deviation method, which compensates the disadvantages of the prism spectrometer, can be composed cost effectively using a length marking tape and a rotating platform. It can measure the refractive indices accurately by utilizing a wide screen. In this study, the equal sided hollow prism whose length is 26 mm was fabricated and measured the refractive indices of seven kind of liquids (pure water, $C_3H_5(OH)_2$, $CCl_4$, $C_6H_4NH_2$, $CS_2$, $C_6H_4(CH_3)_2)$ by using the prism spectrometer and maximum and minimum deviated laser beam method at the wavelengths of He-Ne laser (${\lambda}$= 632.8 nm) and YVO4 laser (${\lambda}$= 532 nm). The result shows that the data obtained by the latter method are more accurate and precise than those obtained by the former device.
Aiming at the development of anticancer agents by modification of phenolic benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid, additional hydroxyl group was put on C10 position of fagaridine (1) by a biomimetic synthetic procedure to afford 10-hydroxyfagaridine (12). All of the synthetic intermediates were also screened in vitro antitumor activities against five different cell lines as well as 12. Among them the representative cytotoxic results are shown as follows; P-quinone (11) $[ED_50;(A549=0.22; {\mu}g/ml)$, $(HCT;15=0.21 {\mu}g/ml)$, fagaridine (1) $(HCT;15=0.41 {\mu}g/ml)$, olefin (6) $(HCT; 15=0.06 {\mu}g/ml)$, acetal (7) $(SKMEL-2=0.07 {\mu}g/ml)$, dihydrofagaridne (10) $(A549=0.38 {\mu}g/ml)$, 10-hydroxyfagaridine (12) $(A 549=0.45{\mu}g/mi)$. From these observation three main remarks can be drawn; (i) the iminium part of benzo[c]phenanthridine is not essential for showing acitvities, (ii) the additional hydroxyl group did not contribute to enhance the cytotoxicity, (iii) the 3-arylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one derivatives were found to display significant in vitro antitumor activity.
An in vitro trial was conducted to examine the effects of total mixed rations (TMR) on fermentation characteristics and effective degradability (ED) by rumen microbes. Three TMR diets were growing period TMR (GR-TMR, 67% TDN), early fattening period TMR (EF-TMR, 75.4% TDN) and late fattening TMR (LF-TMR, 80% TDN). Three TMR diets (3 g of TMRs in each incubation bottles) was added to the mixed culture solution of stained rumen fluid with artificial saliva (1:1, v/v) and incubated anaerobically for 48 hours at $39^{\circ}C$. The pH in all incubation solutions tended to decrease up to 48h, but the opposite results were found in concentration of total gas production, ammonia-N and total VFA in all incubations. The total gas production (p<0.05) in LF-TMR was highest compared with those of other diets. Also, concentration of total VFA was tended to increase in LF-TMR compared with other TMR diets in all incubations. The EDDM in both EF-TMR and LF-TMR was tended to high compared with GR-TMR (p=0.100). In this in vitro trials, concentration of propionate in all incubation solution was not affected by increased concentration of TDN. The results of the present in vitro study indicate that TMR may provide more favorable condition for nutrient digestion both in the rumen.
The immobilization of nitrifier consortium was carried out for the application to recirculating aquaculture system(RAS). The abilities of $NH_4^+$-N removal by immobilized nitrifier consortia prepared with boric acid treated, ethanol treated, ad freezing-thawing treated PVA beads at the concentration 15% were examined. To identify the possibility of applying the beads in the fluidized bed reactor, characteristics of beads were evaluated. The suitable bead was boric acid treated beads which had highest ammonia removal rate of 16.09 g/$m^3$/day. It took 12 days for nitrifier consortium immobilized beads to be stable for the removal of $NH_4^+$-N. Life spans of the beads were more than three months with aggressive aeration in the fluidized ed reactor when nitrifier consortia immobilized in PVA beads were used. In order to apply the nitrifier consortium immobilized beads to aquaculture facility, the continuous reactor was used for 49 days with synthetic aquacultural water containing 2 mg/L ammonia. The highest ammonia removal rate of 31.87 g/$m^3$/day was observed when hydraulic residence time was 0.6 hour(36min.).
