  • Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.

  • Recent advancement in wireless communications and electronics has enabled the development of low power sensor network. Wireless sensor network are often used in remote monitoring control applications, health care, security and environmental monitoring. Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology consisting of small, low-power, and low-cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. Sensor network platform for health care has been designed, fabricated and tested. This system consists of an embedded micro-controller, Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver, power management, I/O expansion, and serial communication (RS-232). The hardware platform uses Atmel ATmega128L 8-bit ultra low power RISC processor with 128KB flash memory as the program memory and 4KB SRAM as the data memory. The radio transceiver (Chipcon CC1000) operates in the ISM band at 433MHz or 916MHz with a maximum data rate of 76.8kbps. Also, the indoor radio range is approximately 20-30m. When many sensors have to communicate with the controller, standard communication interfaces such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or Integrated Circuit ($I^{2}C$) allow sharing a single communication bus. With its low power, the smallest and low cost design, the wireless sensor network system and wireless sensing electronics to collect health-related information of human vitality and main physiological parameters (ECG, Temperature, Perspiration, Blood Pressure and some more vitality parameters, etc.)

  • The present study was designed to examine the effect of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) induction by cobalt protoporphyrin (CoPP) on the cardiac functions and morphology, electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, myocardial antioxidants (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and glutathione [GSH]), and expression of heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 and connexin 43 (Cx-43) in myocardial muscles in isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction (MI). Thirty two adult male Sprague Dawely rats were divided into 4 groups (each 8 rats): normal control (NC) group, ISO group: received ISO at dose of 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 2 successive days; ISO + Trizma group: received (ISO) and Trizma (solvent of CoPP) at dose of 5 mg/kg i.p. injection 2 days before injection of ISO, with ISO at day 0 and at day 2 after ISO injections; and ISO + CoPP group: received ISO and CoPP at a dose of 5 mg/kg dissolved in Trizma i.p. injection as Trizma. We found that, administration of ISO caused significant increase in heart rate, corrected QT interval, ST segment, cardiac enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase-muscle/brain), cardiac HO-1, Hsp70 with significant attenuation in myocardial GSH, SOD, and Cx-43. On the other hand, administration of CoPP caused significant improvement in ECG parameters, cardiac enzymes, cardiac morphology; antioxidants induced by ISO with significant increase in HO-1, Cx-43, and Hsp70 expression in myocardium. In conclusions, we concluded that induction of HO-1 by CoPP ameliorates ISO-induced myocardial injury, which might be due to up-regulation of Hsp70 and gap junction protein (Cx-43).

  • The wireless electrocardiographic monitoring system(WDMS) is designed to be long term monitoring for the early detection of cardiac disorders. The current version of the WDMS can identify two types of cardiac rhythms in real-time, such as atrial fibrillation(AF) and normal sinus rhythm(NSR), which are very important to track cardiac-rhythm disorders. In this study, we proposed the analysis method to discriminate the characteristics statistically evaluated in both time and frequency domains between AF and NSR using various parameters in the heart rate variability(HRV). And we applied various ECG detection methods (e.g., difference operation method) and compared the results with those of the discrete wavelet transform(DWT) method. From the statistically results, we found that the parameters such as STD RR, STD HR, RMSSD, NN50, pNN50, RR Trian, and TNN(p<0.05) are significantly different between the AF and NSR patients in time domain. On the other hand, the frequency domain analysis results showed a significant difference in VLF power($ms^2$), LF power($ms^2$), HF power($ms^2$), VLF(%), LF(%), and HF(%). In particular, the parameters such as STD RR, RMSSD, NN50, pNN50, VLF power, LF power and HF power were considered as the most useful parameters in both AF and NSR patient groups. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to early detection of abnormal conditions and prevent the such abnormals from becoming serious.

  • This paper is about the evaluation of stress response and recovery using biosignals and fuzzy theory. We caused mental stress by means of a coin-stacking task. During the experiment, 4 kinds of biosignals, including frontalis EMG, ECG, peripheral skin temperature and skin conductance level, were acquired. Then, the degree of stress was assessed by synthetically those signals using fuzzy inference. From the fuzzy inference result, the parameters (amount of physiological change / amount of imposed stress) and (time to 25% recovery), which represent response and recovery respectively, were derived. We made a two-dimensional point graph using the response parameter as an abscissa and the recovery parameter as an ordinate for each subject.

  • In this paper, we present change of human sensiblity when the 26 healthy female subjects were exposed with visual picture stimulus. We used Intermational Affective Picture System as the visual stimulus. The methods are AutoRegressive(AR) spectrum which is a linear method and Return Map which is a nonlinear mithod. SR spectrum may variability(HRV). The LF/HF of HRV and the variation of Return Map were analyzed from ECG signal of the female subjects. Return Map of RR intervals were analyzed by computiong the variation. When the subjets were stimulated by the pleasant pictures, LF/HF and variation were decreased compared with unpleasant stimulus, We may obtain good parameters for the measurement of the change of human sensibility for the visual picture stimulus.
