Although giant and large fish species are highly important as a keystone species in the marine ecosystem, there have been no or few studies on their spatio-temporal variations around the Korean peninsula. For this, we analyzed daily reports made by observers at 57 fishery landing sites in Korea over 6 years, from 2011 to 2016. In total, 153 fish species were re-identified based on photos and descriptions recorded by Korean observers, of which five species were classified as a giant fish over 5 m in maximum total length (MTL) and 17 species as a large fish from 3 m to 5 m MTL according to the data presented by Froese & Pauly (2021). Among the giant and large fish species, Mola mola was the most abundant species, with 75 individuals landed as by-catch. The second most abundant species was Isurus oxyrinchus (31), followed by Mobula mobular (23), Lamna ditropis (17), Masturus lanceolatus (16), Sphyrna zygaena (14), and Prionace glauca (12). As a result of cluster analysis based on the number of individuals of giant and large fish species by year and sea, six years were separated into two clusters (2011-2013 vs. 2014-2016), with high contribution of M. mola, I. oxyrinchus, and M. lanceolatus; and three seas were separated into two clusters (eastern + southern seas vs. western sea), with high contribution of M. lanceolatus, L. ditropis, and I. oxyrinchus. The largest number of M. mola accounted for 64% of the total in 2014 and 2016, and 71% in summer (June-August). It is assumed to have a correlation between seawater temperature fluctuation and the occurrence of giant and large fish species. Our study highlights importance of longterm monitoring of giant and large fish species, and can help to understand the life cycle such as natal or nursery migration of giant and large fish species around the Korean peninsula.

Hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀×E. lanceolatus ♂) (mean weight 27.3±3.8 g, mean length 11.6±0.7 cm) were exposed to waterborne nitrite at 0, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600mg L-1 for 96 hours. The hematocrit and hemoglobin values were significantly decreased by exposure to 100 mg L-1 and 400 mg L-1, respectively. In plasma components, no significant change was observed in magnesium. Glucose was significantly increased by 200 and 400 mg L-1 nitrite but reduced by 800 mg L-1. Cholesterol was significantly decreased by 400 mg L-1 nitrite, but there was no significant change in total protein. GPT(glutamic pyruvate transaminase) was significantly increased by exposure to 200 and 400mg L-1. ALP(Alkaline phosphatase) was significantly increased by 800 mg L-1. The results of this study indicate that acute exposure to nitrite changes physiological parameters, such as hematological properties and plasma components.

Hybrid grouper(Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀×E. lanceolatus ♂) (mean weight 25.7±3.5g, mean length 11.2±0.9cm) were exposed to different ammonia concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40mg L-1 for 96 hours. The hematological hematocrit and hemoglobin parameters of the hybrid grouper were significantly decreased by 20 mg L-1 ammonia exposure. In the organic plasma components, calcium was significantly decreased, whereas there was no change in magnesium. In the organic plasma components, the glucose and cholesterol values of the hybrid grouper were significantly increased by ammonia exposure. In the enzymatic plasma components, the ALP(Alkaline phosphatase) value of the hybrid grouper was also significantly increased by ammonia exposure. The results of this study demonstrate that acute ammonia exposure to hybrid grouper induced changes in hematological parameters and plasma components. Therefore, acute ammonia exposure over 20 mg L-1 appears to be toxic to hybrid grouper and the results can be used as a major indicator in breeding hybrid grouper.

As part of an effort to establish of novel grouper hybrids for the aquaculture industry, we compared the embryonic development of fertilized eggs of giant grouper Epinephelus lanceolatus ♀×kelp grouper E. bruneus ♂ (GGKG) and giant grouper ♀×red-spotted grouper E. akaara ♂ (GGRG) with a maternal purebred (giant grouper ♀×♂, GG) at 27-29℃. The hatching rates were lower in GGKG (2.59%) and GGRG (0.36%) than in GG (12.29%). The hatching times were considerably longer in the two hybrids than in GG (22 h), which were similar between GGKG (28 h 30 min) and GGRG (28 h). The total lengths of yolk-absorbed larvae of GGKG (2.546±0.132 mm) and GGRG (2.602±0.093 mm) were similar to that of GG (2.565±0.149 mm). The deformity rates of hatched larvae (64.29-75.00%) did not differ between the two hybrids and GG. Although the hatching and deformity rates of GGKG and GGRG were inferior to those of GG, the possibility of mass production of the two hybrids larvae was demonstrated in this study.
To investigate the ichthyofauna and habitat type of the fish in Tamjin River system, Korea, fishes were collected with cast net ($5{\times}5\;mm$, $8{\times}8\;mm$) and dip net ($4{\times}4\;mm$) at eight stations seasonally during five years from 2000 to 2004. 56 species belonging to 18 families were collected and 15 Korean endemic species( 26.8%) were investigated. While Coreoperca kawamebari was occurred at every station, the number of individuals and composition were decreased. Anguilla marmorata was not collected and the exotic species didn't appeared. Dominant species were Zacco platypus(34.2%), Squalidus gracilis majimae (9.4%), Microphysogobio yaluensis(8.1%), Zacco temmincki(6.8%) and Acheilognathus lanceolatus(5.1%). The surveyed stations were clustered into 3 groups: up stream, main stream and estuary. With the cluster analysis using the relative abundance of major fishes at each habitat, fishes were separated into 5 habitat types: U (upstream type), UM (up and main stream type), M (main stream), ME (main stream and estuarine type), and E (estuarine type).
The present study measured the growth performance of juvenile hybrid of red-spotted grouper ♀ × giant grouper ♂ (RGGG) across four water temperatures (19, 23, 27, and 31℃) and compared it to those of maternal purebreds (red-spotted grouper ♀ × ♂, RG) for eight weeks. The specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain (WG) of RGGG increased as temperature increased, with greater SGR and WG at higher temperatures (27 and 31℃) than RG. The condition factor of RGGG was higher than that of RG and there were no differences between temperature groups within breeding lines. Food consumption increased at higher temperatures for both RGGG and RG, and was the highest in the 31℃ group. Similar to the SGR and WG, the food conversion rate (FCR) in RGGG decreased with increasing water temperature, with the significantly lowest value at 31℃; in RG, however, FCR progressively decreased in the 27℃ group, then increased in the 31℃ group. Furthermore, the FCR of the 31℃ group of RGGG, which had the lowest value among the RGGG groups, was lower than that of the 27℃ group of RG, which had the lowest RG value. In the analysis of nonlinear regression curves within the range of experimental temperature, the optimum temperature for SGR and FCR in RGGG was 31℃, unlike in RG. In conclusion, the growth performance of juvenile RGGG seems to have largely improved from the influence of paternal traits, hybrid with giant grouper, and it is presumed to be more profitable for commercial production in tropics/subtropics.
The objectives of the study were to determine fish fauna and compositions during 2010~2011 in Walpyung Conservation Park along with analysis of fish community structures and trophic and tolerance guilds. Total number of species and individuals sampled were 31 and 2667, respectively and dominant species was Zacco platypus (46.6%) and subdominant species was Acheilognathus lanceolatus (8.7%), which were composed of >50% of the total. Total number of Korean endemic species including Microphysogobio yaluensis was 10 and the proportion of the individuals was 8.7%. Also, natural monument No. 454 of Iksookimia choii, which is endangered species and legal protected species, was sampled and the total number of individuals was only three. According to the analysis of fish community structures, species richness index in the mid-stream reach ($M_r$) was 3.145, which is higher than any other stream reaches ($U_r$ and $D_r$). In contrast, the richness index was 2.180 in the up-stream reach ($U_r$), which is minimum among the sampling sites. Species diversity index was 1.785 and 1.975, respectively in the headwater ($U_r$) and mid-stream reach ($M_r$) and the low values in the down-stream reach ($D_r$, 1.660) were due to the influences of pointsource (i.e., road construction) and non-point sources (sporadic agricultural spots). According to analysis of tolerance guilds, the proportion of tolerant species (TS), based on the number of individuals, was composed of 64.2% and sensitive species (SS) was only 3.3%, indicating a predominance of tolerant fishes in the compositions. The proportion of omnivore species (OS), however, was composed of 64.0% and insectivore species (IS) was 29.3%, indicating a predominance of omnivore fishes in the stream. The high proportions of tolerant and omnivore species in this stream indicates that the water quality and physical habitat environments were degradated in this system. For these reasons, especially natural monument and endemic fish species in this region should be protected from the massive constructions and required to provide efficient stream management strategies.
