The epicentral region of earthquakes is typically where liquefaction-related damage takes place. To determine the maximum distance, such as maximum epicentral distance (Re), maximum fault distance (Rf), or maximum hypocentral distance (Rh), at which an earthquake can inflict damage, given its magnitude, this study, using a recently updated global liquefaction database, multiple ML models are built to predict the limiting distances (Re, Rf, or Rh) required for an earthquake of a given magnitude to cause damage. Four machine learning models LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), BiLSTM (Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory), CNN (Convolutional Neural Network), and XGB (Extreme Gradient Boosting) are developed using the Python programming language. All four proposed ML models performed better than empirical models for limiting distance assessment. Among these models, the XGB model outperformed all the models. In order to determine how well the suggested models can predict limiting distances, a number of statistical parameters have been studied. To compare the accuracy of the proposed models, rank analysis, error matrix, and Taylor diagram have been developed. The ML models proposed in this paper are more robust than other current models and may be used to assess the minimal energy of a liquefaction disaster caused by an earthquake or to estimate the maximum distance of a liquefied site provided an earthquake in rapid disaster mapping.
This paper delves into the critical assessment of predicting sidewall displacement in underground caverns through the application of nine distinct machine learning techniques. The accurate prediction of sidewall displacement is essential for ensuring the structural safety and stability of underground caverns, which are prone to various geological challenges. The dataset utilized in this study comprises a total of 310 data points, each containing 13 relevant parameters extracted from 10 underground cavern projects located in Iran and other regions. To facilitate a comprehensive evaluation, the dataset is evenly divided into training and testing subset. The study employs a diverse array of machine learning models, including recurrent neural network, back-propagation neural network, K-nearest neighbors, normalized and ordinary radial basis function, support vector machine, weight estimation, feed-forward stepwise regression, and fuzzy inference system. These models are leveraged to develop predictive models that can accurately forecast sidewall displacement in underground caverns. The training phase involves utilizing 80% of the dataset (248 data points) to train the models, while the remaining 20% (62 data points) are used for testing and validation purposes. The findings of the study highlight the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model as the most effective in providing accurate predictions. The BPNN model demonstrates a remarkably high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99) and a low error rate (RMSE = 4.27E-05), indicating its superior performance in predicting sidewall displacement in underground caverns. This research contributes valuable insights into the application of machine learning techniques for enhancing the safety and stability of underground structures.

Mostly in motor fault detection the instantaneous values 3 axis vibration and 3phase current in time domain are acquired and converted to frequency domain. Vibrations are more useful in diagnosing the mechanical faults and motor current has remained more useful in electrical fault diagnosis. With having some experience and knowledge on the behavior of acquired data the electrical and mechanical faults are diagnosed through signal processing techniques or combine machine learning and signal processing techniques. In this paper, a single-layer LSTM based condition monitoring system is proposed in which the instantaneous values of three phased motor current are firstly acquired in simulated motor in in health and supply imbalance conditions in each of three stator currents. The acquired three phase current in time domain is then used to train a LSTM network, which can identify the type of fault in electrical supply of motor and phase in which the fault has occurred. Experimental results shows that the proposed single layer LSTM algorithm can identify the electrical supply faults and phase of fault with an average accuracy of 88% based on the three phase stator current as raw data without any processing or feature extraction.

The objective of this study is to present a data-driven machine learning (ML) framework for predicting ultimate shear strength and failure modes of reinforced concrete ledge beams. Experimental tests were collected on these beams with different loading, geometric and material properties. The database was analyzed using different ML algorithms including decision trees, discriminant analysis, support vector machine, logistic regression, nearest neighbors, naïve bayes, ensemble and artificial neural networks to identify the governing and critical parameters of reinforced concrete ledge beams. The results showed that ML framework can effectively identify the failure mode of these beams either web shear failure, flexural failure or ledge failure. ML framework can also derive equations for predicting the ultimate shear strength for each failure mode. A comparison of the ultimate shear strength of ledge failure was conducted between the experimental results and the results from the proposed equations and the design equations used by international codes. These comparisons indicated that the proposed ML equations predict the ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete ledge beams better than the design equations of AASHTO LRFD-2020 or PCI-2020.
A deep learning based real-time painting surface inspection algorithm is proposed herein, designed for developing an autonomous inspection drone. The painting surface inspection is usually conducted manually. However, the manual inspection has a limitation in obtaining accurate data for correct judgement on the surface because of human error and deviation of individual inspection experiences. The best method to replace manual surface inspection is the vision-based inspection method with a camera, using various image processing algorithms. Nevertheless, the visual inspection is difficult to apply to surface inspection due to diverse appearances of material, hue, and lightning effects. To overcome technical limitations, a deep learning-based pattern recognition algorithm is proposed, which is specialized for painting surface inspections. The proposed algorithm functions in real time on the embedded board mounted on an autonomous inspection drone. The inspection results data are stored in the database and used for training the deep learning algorithm to improve performance. The various experiments for pre-inspection of painting processes are performed to verify real-time performance of the proposed deep learning algorithm.
Recently, identification of the extremely stressed condition of children is an essential skill for real-time recognition of a dangerous situation because incidents of children have been dramatically increased. In this paper, therefore, we present a model based on machine learning techniques for stress status identification of a child by using bio-signals such as voice and heart rate that are major factors for presenting a child's emotion. In addition, a smart band for collecting such bio-signals and a mobile application for monitoring child's stress status are also suggested. Specifically, the proposed method utilizes stress patterns of children that are obtained in advance for the purpose of training stress status identification model. Then, the model is used to predict the current stress status for a child and is designed based on conventional machine learning algorithms. The experiment results conducted by using a real-world dataset showed that the possibility of automated detection of a child's stress status with a satisfactory level of accuracy. Furthermore, the research results are expected to be used for preventing child's dangerous situations.
This paper proposes an approach to detect abnormal data in automotive controller area network (CAN) using an unsupervised learning model, i.e. autoencoder and Gaussian kernel density estimation function. The proposed autoencoder model is trained with only message ID of CAN data frames. Afterwards, by employing the Gaussian kernel density estimation function, it effectively detects abnormal data based on the trained model characterized by the optimally determined number of frames and a loss threshold. It was verified and evaluated using four types of attack data, i.e. DoS attacks, gear spoofing attacks, RPM spoofing attacks, and fuzzy attacks. Compared with conventional unsupervised learning-based models, it has achieved over 99% detection performance across all evaluation metrics.

These days, various and tons of education information are rapidly increasing and spreading due to Internet and smart devices usage. Recently, as e-Learning usage increasing, many instructors and students (learners) need to set a goal to maximize learners' result of education and education system efficiency based on big data analytics via online recorded education historical data. In this paper, the author applied Word2Vec algorithm (neural network algorithm) to find similarity among education words and classification by clustering algorithm in order to objectively recognize and analyze online recorded education historical data. When the author applied the Word2Vec algorithm to education words, related-meaning words can be found, classified and get a similar vector values via learning repetition. In addition, through experimental results, the author proved the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective and adverb) have same shortest distance from the centroid by using clustering algorithm.
The Yeongsan River, one of the four largest rivers in South Korea, has been facing difficulties with water quality management with respect to algal bloom. The algal bloom menace has become bigger, especially after the construction of two weirs in the mainstream of the Yeongsan River. Therefore, the prediction and factor analysis of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is needed for effective water quality management. In this study, Chl-a prediction model was developed, and the performance evaluated using machine and deep learning methods, such as Deep Neural Network (DNN), Random Forest (RF), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Moreover, the correlation analysis and the feature importance results were compared to identify the major factors affecting the concentration of Chl-a. All models showed high prediction performance with an R2 value of 0.9 or higher. In particular, XGBoost showed the highest prediction accuracy of 0.95 in the test data. The results of feature importance suggested that Ammonia (NH3-N) and Phosphate (PO4-P) were common major factors for the three models to manage Chl-a concentration. From the results, it was confirmed that three machine learning methods, DNN, RF, and XGBoost are powerful methods for predicting water quality parameters. Also, the comparison between feature importance and correlation analysis would present a more accurate assessment of the important major factors.
The energy harvesting system using an inverted flag is analyzed by using an immersed boundary method to consider the fluid and solid interaction. The inverted flag flutters at a lower critical velocity than a conventional flag. A fluttering motion is classified into straight, symmetric, asymmetric, biased, and over flapping modes. The optimal energy harvesting efficiency is observed at the biased flapping mode. Using the three different machine learning algorithms, i.e., artificial neural network, random forest, support vector regression, the energy harvesting efficiency is predicted by taking bending rigidity, inclination angle, and flapping frequency as input variables. The R2 value of the artificial neural network and random forest algorithms is observed to be more than 0.9.
