The modification of magnetic structures for an E-core switched reluctance machine (SRM) comprising two segmented stator cores or a monolithic stator core is presented for ease of assembly, good manufacturability, mechanical robustness, and electromagnetic performance improvement. The E-core stator has four small poles with phase windings and two or four large poles (hereafter referred to as common poles), in between. The common poles are shared by both phases for positive torque generation during the entire operation. The E-core SRMs are compared to a conventional two-phase SRM. The comparison includes cost savings, torque, copper and core losses, and efficiency in order to validate the distinct features of the E-core SRMs. Magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) technique is employed for proving the benefits of the E-core common-pole structure.
In this work a new configuration of E-core stator Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) with permanent magnets and auxiliary windings embedded in the stator yoke is proposed. For the proposed configuration of SRM electromagnetic analysis is performed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based computer aided design package MagNet and to emphasize its merits a comparison is drawn with existing hybrid excitation configuration of SRM. In addition, the vibration characteristics of the motor are analyzed by performing modal and transient analysis using the ANSYS package. Results of the analysis reveals that the proposed configuration of SRM exhibits better electromagnetic and vibration characteristics and is capable of competing with the existing topologies in the variable speed market.
In this paper, optimal stator slot shape of 3-phase inverter-fed induction motor is designed to reduce stator core and winding losses. For the analysis, the F.E.M on 1 phase band periodic condition in stator is coupled with harmonic equivalent circuit. For the optimal design, the conjugate gradient method is used as an optimizing algorithm. The stator core and winding losses are reduced by the design method. The results are verified by those of the time-step finite element analysis.

The present study is devoted to the influence of a superposed radial inflow in a rotor-stator cavity with a peripheral opening. The flow regime is turbulent, the two boundary layers being separated by a core region. An original theoretical solution is obtained for the core region, explaining the reason why a weak radial inflow has no major influence near the periphery of the cavity but strongly affects the flow behavior near the axis. The validity of the theory is tested with the help of a new set of experimental data including the radial and tangential mean velocity components, as well as three components of the Reynolds stress tensor measured by hot-wire anemometry. The theoretical results are also in good agreement with numerical results obtained with the Fluent code and experimental data from the literature.
Slotless linear brushless DC motor are widely used in precision machine applications because of their advantages such as low of detent force, negligible iron loss. But they have a disadvantage such as low thrust density, thrust ripple, and excessive use of permanent magnet materials. These lead to undesirable performance and high production cost. In this paper, we deal with the design and characteristics investigation of a air-core tubular linear brushless DC(TLBLDC) motor with air-core stator and permanent magnet mover. And to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of air-core TLBLDC motor, the prototype machine is manufactured and analyzed by F.E.M. and Matlab simulink simulations. Especially, dynamic characteristics of air-core TLBLDC motor driven with 6 step inverter are simulated by F.E.M.coupling with external circuit and Matlab simulink program, and measured for the prototype motor. The simulation results are compared to the experimental results such as current waves, thrust and speed curve.
The SRM is a doubly salient, singly excited machine. The torque is developed by the tendency for the magnetic circuit to adopt a configuration of minimum reluctance, i.e. for the rotor to move into in line with the stator poles and to maximize the inductance of the coils excited. It is common practice to combine them into groups of poles which are excited simultaneously; for example, 8/6 SRM (8 stator poles and 6 rotor poles) for 4 phases, 6/4, 12/8 SRM for 3 phases, 4/2, 6/3 SRM for 2 phases. Small number of phases in two-phase SRMs allows more cost savings with regards to the switching devices in the converter. The stator back irons of two phase 6/3 SRM and C-core 4/3 SRM does not experience any flux reversal as the flux is in the same direction whether phase A or B is excited. In this study, the similarities, the differences, and structural characteristics between the two SRMs was studied, The magnetic analysis also has been carried out by the finite element method analysis (FEM).

This paper presents a new motor design well suited for an advanced exercise bike. The advanced exercise bike setup high demands for performance and physical dimensions, which is high torque, wide speed range and a diameter/length ratio around 5. These requirements makes the new motor design called an E-core Transverse Flu Machine (ETFM) vev interesting because the segmented design of the stator and rotor poles enables high diameter without increasing the flux-path and since the ETFM is similar to the switched reluctance motor, high torque and wide speed range is possible. The design of the ETFM can be peformed using a developed design program, which is also introduced in the paper. A prototype of the exercise bike with the ETFM and a classical H-bridge converter with analog current control is constructed for verification of the concept.
We calculate characteristics of the linear synchronous propulsion system by the finite element analysis. The finite element method using voltage source can consider the ripple factor caused by the core shape and the distored wave of stator currents caused by the core shape and the back e.m.f. The TRANSRAPID-06 system developed by Germany is adoped for the numerical example.
This paper describes the development and fabrication of a high temperature superconducting motor which consists of HTS rotor and air-core stator. The machine was designed for the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. The HTS field windings are composed of the double-pancake coils wound with AMSC's SUS-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor. These were assembled on the support structure and fixed by a bandage of glass-fiber composite. The cooling system is based on the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphon by using GM cryocooler as cooling source. The cold head is in contact with the condenser of a Ne-filled thermosyphon. The rotor assembly was tested independently at the stationary state and combined with stator. Characteristic parameters such as reactances, inductances, and time constants were determined to obtain a consistent overview of the machine operation properties. This motor has met all design parameters by demonstrating HTS field winding, cryogenic refrigeration systems and an air-core armature winding cooled with air. The HTS field winding could be cooled down below 30K. No-load test of open-circuit characteristics(OCC) and short-circuit characteristics(SCC) and load test with resistive load bank were conducted in generator mode. Maximum operating current of field winding at 30K was 120A. From OCC and SCC test results synchronous inductance and synchronous reactance were 2.4mH, 0.49pu, respectively. Efficiency of this HTS machine was 93.3% in full load(100hp) test. This paper will present design, construction, and basic experimental test results of the 100hp HTS machine.
One of the most important technical improvement required for ropeless elevator system to become practical is the improvements in overall system efficiency. Moreover, the predominant drawback of permanent magnet (PM) linear synchronous motor (LSM) is large detent force. Therefore, for the given volume the selection of high power density PM-LSM with low detent force is very imperative. In this paper, we will investigate the characteristics of thrust and detent force of PM-LSM under different motor topology structure. Finally, the long stator double-sided iron core type PM-LSM with fractional slot winding is the best choice for the ropeless elevator system.
