This study was undertaken to obtain the incidence of dysmenorrhea and differance of dysmenorrhea according to the general characteristics, lifestyle, and menstrual pattern in women community college students. For the data collection, self-administered questionnaire survey was made from April 7, 1999 to April 14, 1999 among the 204 women community college students. The resultant data were processed by SAS program for frequency, proportion, and Chi-square test. The results of this study are as follows ; 1) Prevalence rate of dysmenorrhea was 81.9%. Among women who had dysmenorrhea, 42.6% of them had family history on dysmenorrhea, 47% of them experienced the dysmenorrhea 'monthly', 89.2% of them had experienced dysmenorrhea on the first-second day, 38.5% of them responded that the most painful region was 'low abdomen', 61.5% of them responded that they used 'analgesics' to soothe dysmenorrhea, 92.3% of them responded that they had analgesics without doctor's prescription, and 42.6% of them responded that they experienced digestive system related symptoms during menstrual period. 2) The incidence of dysmenorrhea was significantly different by ordering of sisters, blood type, and body shape. 3) The incidence of dysmenorrhea was no significantly different by life style. 4) The incidence of dysmenorrhea was no significantly different by menstrual pattern.
Purpose : Dysmenorrhea which repeat every menstrual phase give complaints like pain, vomiting, nasal bleeding and etc. But in many textbooks pathogenesis and treatment process of dysmenorrhea obscure. So the purpose of this study is to identify the conception, pathogenesis and treatment process of dysmenorrhea. Methods : After catching the limitations of preexistence theory about dysmenorrhea, I show a meaningful argument of dysmenorrhea. Results : The conception, pathogenesis and treatment process of dysmenorrhea are like this. Dysmenorrhea which occurs for menstrual phase can make deficiency of blood. There are intimate relations between uterine function and the five Zang-organs, especially heart, spleen and liver, so menstruation induces the weakness of those organs. And the insufficiency of kidney and conception-thorough vessel which have control over the uterine function can make dysmenorrhea. Conclusion : The deficiency of kidney which is responsible for holding Qi breaks down the balance of Zang-organs Yin-Yang, then dysmenorrhea appears through Zang-organs weakness of heart, spleen and liver. For the treatment of dysmenorrhea, we should consider preferentially the deficiency of kidney, afterward Bianzheng Lunzhi of the Zang-fu organs.
This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of dysmenorrhea in women labor workers The subjects were 327 women labor workers in the area of Kyunggi. Kyungsang and Chunla Provinclils. The data were collected from 20. January to 20. February. 1999 by using self-administered structured questionnaires. The contents of, questionnaire were composed of demographic(3 items). work related(2 items). life style (6 items), obstetric-menstrual(8 items) characteristics. and experiences of dysmenorrhea(6 items). The results were as follows 1. Prevalence rate of dysmenorrhea was $76.8\%$. Among women who had dysmenorrhea. $52.0\%$ of them had family history on dysmenorrhea. $46.0\%$ of them experienced limitation of daily activities. $18.3\%$ of them have started the dysmenorrhea since their employment present company. and $8.8\%$ of them visited hospital due to dysmenorrhea of the subjects who took analgesics for relieving menstrnal pain. $7.2\%$ had no effect. 2. The frequency of dysmenorrhea was significantly different by educational level. working period. and the amount of mentrual flow.
Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends in the periodic therapy of dysmenorrhea in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: We searched articles in Chinese Academic journal (CAJ). Search key words were 'dysmenorrhea' and 'periodic therapy or cyclic treatment'. Results: We selected 6 studies except unrelated studies. According to study design, study was classified into 1 single group before after study and 5 randomized controlled trials. According to dysmenorrheal type, study was classified into 4 studies on primary dysmenorrhea and 2 studies on secondary dysmenorrhea. In the selected studies, there were four studies in which the menstrual cycle was divided into 2 periods, one study divided into 3 periods, and one study divided into 4 periods. The most used herb was "Angelicae Gigantis Radix", "Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus". All studies showed effective results on dysmenorrhea. Conclusions: In TCM, Research on periodic therapy of dysmenorrhea was being conducted more actively than Korean medicine. The periodic therapy seems to be effective on dysmenorrhea from this research. It would be necessary to fulfill further clinical study with periodic therapy on dysmenorrhea in Korean medicine to establish standard evidence of them.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to recognize menstrual pattern and dysmenorrhea related factor of first-year women student at college. Methods: From March 22nd to April 2nd, 2010 we researched 382 first-year women students at 00college, aged 19(born after March 1991 to February 1992) by questionnaires to investigate their menstruation and stress. Results: 1. There was statistical correlation between dysmenorrhea and weight and BMI. 2. There was statistical correlation between dysmenorrhea and menstrual amount. 3. There was statistical correlation between dysmenorrhea and menstrual blood clot. 4. There was statistical correlation between dysmenorrhea and stress. Conclusion: This study showed the menstrual pattern and relation between dysmenorrhea and stress. Dysmenorrhea is related to weight, BMI, menstrual amount, menstrual blood clot and especially stress is closely related to dysmenorrhea.
Purpose: This study was to review dysmenorrhea and its relief methods in nursing students by using base data for reducing dysmenorrhea. Method: The subjects were 92 students, data were collected by questionnaire surveys using convenience sampling and analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Medium amount of menstruation was most frequently answered and massage on painful sites was the most frequently used relief method(p<0.05). Frequency of medication was once a day during menstrual period, and methods that the most wanted to use when pain got severe was alternative methods(aroma, massage, and acupuncture)(p<0.05). Amount of menstruation showed a negative correlation with the duration(r=-0.32), dysmenorrhea was correlated with the severest days of dysmenorrhea(r=0.24) and the frequency of medication(r=-0.23). Conclusion: These results suggested that dysmenorrhea was correlated with the severest days of dysmenorrhea and the frequency of medication, but other variables showed no relations with menstrual characteristics.
This study was designed to verify the effect of aromatherapy on menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea by a quasi experiment (nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design), from March to October, 2000. The subjects of this experiment consisted of 45 college women with menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea. They were randomized by 25 for the experimental group and 20 for the control group. Their mean age was 20.6 years, mean menstrual period 28.7 days, mean menstrual cramps(VAS) 7.25, mean dysmenorrhea (Dysmenorrhea Scale) was 27.34. As treatment, aromatherapy was to give effleurrage of the abdomen with lavender, clary sage and rose as aroma oil, almond oil as carrier oil. For the control group, abdominal massage was given with only almond oil. Data collection included menstrual cramps, dysmenorrhea, the change of symptoms(low abdominal pain, lumbago, headache, nausea, fatigue, edema). Menstrual cramps, dysmenorrhea and general, menstrual characteristics of subjects were measured the first day of the pre menstrual period before treatment (pre-test), menstrual cramps, dysmenorrhea, the change of symptoms were measured the first and second day of post menstrual period after treatment (posttest). Data were analyzed by t-test, $\chi^2$- test, repeated measures ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ with SAS Program. The results of this study was as follows; 1. Menstrual cramps was significantly lower in the experimental group(p = .001). 2. Dysmenorrhea was significantly lower in the experimental group(p = .027). 3. Less women in the experimental group complained about the six symptoms than women in the control group after treatment on the first day of the menstrual period(p < 0.05, p < 0.01) In conclusion, these findings indicate that aromatherapy with lavender, clary sage, and rose could be effective to decrease menstrual cramps, and dysmenorrhea. So, aromatherapy could be applied to women suffering with menstrual cramps, dysmenorrhea periodically as an nursing intervention.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to recognize change of menstrual patterns and dysmenorrhea according to obesity indices and physical activity in female college students. Methods: From March 22nd to May 14th, 2010 we researched 1,407 women students at OO College by questionnaires to investigate their menstruation, dysmenorrhea, obesity and physical activity. Results: 1. Triglyceride(TG) was decreased statistically in the regular group of menstrual cycle as compared with the irregular group. 2. Menstrual duration was not associated with obesity indices. 3. Higher BMI was associated with more menstrual amount. 4. Dysmenorrhea was increased with decreasing BMI. 5. Neither menstrual patterns nor dysmenorrhea were associated with physical activity, but dysmenorrhea was decreased in minimally active group. Conclusion: This study showed the significant effect of menstruation and dysmenorrhea on obesity indices and physical activity. Obesity is related to menstruation and dysmenorrhea, but physical activity isn't related to them.
Purpose : Dysmenorrhea can be caused by misalignment of the pelvis. Since pilates stabilization exercise is a methods that affects pelvic alignment by inducing contraction of abdominal muscles, the purpose of this study is to determine whether dysmenorrhea is reduced when pilates stabilization exercise is applied. Methods : 47 dysmenorrhea patients were randomly divided into experimental (n=23) and control (n=24) groups. The experimental group performed pilates stabilization exercise three times a week for 12 weeks, and the control group did not perform any intervention. Abdominal muscle thickness, lumbar pelvic alignment, and dysmenorrhea were measured before intervention, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks after intervention to determine the mean change over time and the effect of group and factor interactions (repeated measured ANOVA and contrast test for each period). Results : In the experimental group, the thickness of the transverse abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles were increased significantly by group and period (p<.05). The pelvic torsion, lordosis and dysmenorrhea were also significantly decreased by group and period. But the control group did not change significantly in any of the variables. Conclusion : Applying pilates stabilization exercise to women with dysmenorrhea may be an effective intervention that contributes to relieving dysmenorrhea by correcting the stability and alignment of the lumbar pelvis.
Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate objective evaluation of dysmenorrhea. Methods : The study was conducted by 37 articles from year 1979 to 2003 on dysmenorrhea, scale and questionaire. The articles was limited by English, Human, and Clinical trial Results : 1. The 37 articles on dysmenorrhea evaluated by scale or questionaire have been published from 1979. There are 27 articles of randomized controlled trial among them. 2. Scale or question has confidence in the assessment of dysmenorrhea. 3. In the initial stage the article on dysmenorrhea was assessed by only one unidimentional scale. However in recent articles multidimensional scales are applied frequently. Moreover it is the modern trend that point scale such as 100mm VAS and MVRS(multidimensional verbal rating scale) are applied together in one article on dysmenorrhea. Conclusion : It can be suggested that scale or questionaire be the method for objective evaluation of dysmenorrhea.
