The dynamic characteristics of the annular pressure seal employed in pump have been theoretically deduced with consideration of the effects of elastic deformation due to the thermal stress. The thermal deformation is developed for the two-dimensional steady thermal stress distribution in a infinite circular cylinder subject to heating of the seal and shaft surface into the surrounding fluid. To demonstrate this analysis, the effects of thermal stress on rotordynamic coefficients and logarithmic decrement for annular plain seals was shown.
Using a Rheometries Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) in large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields were measured over a temperature range of $25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ and the linear viscoelastic behavior in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields was investigated over a wide range of angular frequencies. In this article, the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior was reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effect of temperature on this behavior was discussed in detail. In addition, the angular frequency and temperature dependencies of a linear viscoelastic behavior were explained. Finally, the applicability of a time-temperature superposition principle originally developed for polymeric materials was examined using a shift factor. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At very small strain amplitude region, vaseline shows a linear viscoelastic behavior independent of the imposed deformation magnitudes. Above a critical strain amplitude $({\gamma}_{0}=0.1{\sim}0.2%)$, however, vaseline exhibits a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior ; indicating that both the storage modulus and dynamic viscosity are sharply decreased with increasing deformation magnitude. (2) In large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, an elastic behavior (storage modulus) has a stronger strain amplitude dependence and begins to show a nonlinear behavior at a smaller strain amplitude region than does a viscous behavior (dynamic viscosity). (3) In small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, the storage modulus as well as the loss modulus are continuously increased as an increase in angular frequency and an elastic nature is always superior to a viscous behavior over a wide range of angular frequencies. (4) A time-temperature superposition principle can successfully be applicable to vaseline. This finding allows us to estimate the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of vaseline over an extraordinarily extended range (11 decades) of angular frequencies inaccessible from the experimentally measured range (4 decades).
In this paper, we propose a 2D-FE model in single impact with combined physical factors to obtain a unique residual stress by shot peening. Applied physical parameters include elastic-plastic deformation of shot ball, material damping coefficients, strain rate, dynamic friction coefficients. Single impact FE model consists of 2D axisymmetric elements. The FE model with combined factors showed converged and unique distributions of surface stress, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth. Further, in contrast to the FE models with rigid shot and elastic deformable shot, FE model with plastic deformable shot produces residual stresses very close to experimental solutions by X-ray diffraction. We therefore validated the 2D FE model with combined peeing factors and plastic deformable shot. This FE model will be a base of the 3D FE model for residual stresses by multi-impact shot peening.
The engine bearing transmits the powers from cylinder to crankshaft with small clearance between con-rod and crankpin. The minimum oil film thickness is a significant parameter in the operation of bearing. The contact pressure of bearing should be considered for the reason that elastic deformation of bearing be caused by contact pressure of bearing. There are important factors which are maintaining of minimum oil film thickness expecting of the length of maximum and minimum oil film thickness with changing of the loads to keep running normally. Furthermore, this study is very crucial to develop the design of engine bearing and crankshaft system.
This paper describes the tribological effects on the nonlinear behavior of a spur gear pair with one-way clutch according to the direct contact elastic deformation model over a wide range of speeds, considering the hydrodynamic effects. The effects of various lubrication parameters, such as viscosity, film width, and friction, on the nonlinear dynamic behavior were analyzed. Forces due to the entraining velocity and the hydrodynamic friction were about two orders smaller than normal forces over the whole speed range. While the viscosity has a strong effect on the behavior of gear pair systems, friction has very little effect on torsional behavior. The inclusion of the hydrodynamic effect facilitates nonlinearity by increasing the overlap and damping, as well as decreasing elastic deformation and tooth reaction forces.

In this work, the dynamic response of functionally graded beams on variable elastic foundations is studied using a novel higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). Unlike the conventional HSDT, the present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral variables. The FG beams were assumed to be supported on Winkler-Pasternak type foundations in which the Winkler modulus is supposed to be variable in the length of the beam. The variable rigidity of the elastic foundation is assumed to be linear, parabolic and sinusoidal along the length of the beam. The material properties of the FG porous beam vary according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The equations of motion are determined using the virtual working principle. For the analytical solution, Navier method is used to solve the governing equations for simply supported porous FG beams. Numerical results of the present theory for the free vibration of FG beams resting on elastic foundations are presented and compared to existing solutions in the literature. A parametric study will be detailed to investigate the effects of several parameters such as gradient index, thickness ratio, porosity factor and foundation parameters on the frequency response of porous FG beams.
The time-varying structural reliability of an aeroelastic launch vehicle subjected to stochastic parameters is investigated. The launch vehicle structure is under the combined action of several stochastic loads that include aerodynamics, thrust as well as internal combustion pressure. The launch vehicle's main body structural flexibility is modeled via the normal mode shapes of a free-free Euler beam, where the aerodynamic loadings on the vehicle are due to force on each incremental section of the vehicle. The rigid and elastic coupled nonlinear equations of motion are derived following the Lagrangian approach that results in a complete aeroelastic simulation for the prediction of the instantaneous launch vehicle rigid-body motion as well as the body elastic deformations. Reliability analysis has been performed based on two distinct limit state functions, defined as the maximum launch vehicle tip elastic deformation and also the maximum allowable stress occurring along the launch vehicle total length. In this fashion, the time-dependent reliability problem can be converted into an equivalent time-invariant reliability problem. Subsequently, the first-order reliability method, as well as the Monte Carlo simulation schemes, are employed to determine and verify the aeroelastic launch vehicle dynamic failure probability for a given flight time.

Thin fabric-based yacht sails have a cambered shape to generate lift force; however, their shape can be easily deformed by wind pressure and also affected by the deformation of the mast. These deformations can change the airflow characteristics over the sail. Therefore, Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis is needed to evaluate the sail force precisely. In this study, airflow over the deformed sail and rig was studied using FSI. Elastic deformation of the sail and rig was obtained by an aerodynamic calculation under dynamic pressure loading on the sail surface. The effects of rig deformation on the aerodynamic performance of the sail were examined according to the rig type and mast flexibilities. As a result, the changes of lift force for a fractional type rig with a thin mast section were more significant than with a masthead rig.
