  • It has been known that acetylation improves the dimensional stability of wood. Liquid phase acetylation is more popular than gas-phase acetylation for the effectiveness of weight gain of wood. In this study domestic red and Korean pine specimens were liquid phase acetylated and their physical properties, such as density, bending strength, dimensional stability etc., were investigated. Acetylation increased the average weights of red and Korean pine specimens by 10.4% and 9.2%, respectively, and their average oven-dry densities were increased by 6.9% and 4.6%, respectively. Acetylation did not influence on modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and dynamic MOE (DMOE). The average percentage reduction in hygroscopicity (PRH) of red and Korean pine specimens were respectively 20.6% and 13.8%, while the average percentage reduction in water soaking (PRW) were respectively 20.0% and 8.5%. Thus it can be concluded that the liquid acetylation improved the dimensional stability of red pine specimens more than that of Korean pine specimens.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to compare one-hand and two-hands lifting activity in terms of biomechanical stress for the range of lifting heights from 10cm above floor level to knuckle height. Background: Even though two-hands lifting activity of manual materials handling tasks are prevalent at the industrial site, many manual materials handling tasks which require the worker to perform one-hand lifting are also very common at the industrial site and forestry and farming. Method: Eight male subjects were asked to perform lifting tasks using both a one-handed as well as a two-handed lifting technique. Trunk muscle electromyographic activity was recorded while the subjects performed the lifting tasks. This information was used as input to an EMG-assisted free-dynamic biomechanical model that predicted spinal loading in three dimensions. Results: It was shown that for the left-hand lifting tasks, the values of moment, lateral shear force, A-P shear force, and compressive force were increased by the average 43%, as the workload was increased twice from 7.5kg to 15.0kg. For the right-hand lifting task, these were increased by the average 34%. For the two-hands lifting tasks, these were increased by the average 25%. The lateral shear forces at L5/S1 of one-hand lifting tasks, notwithstanding the half of the workload of two-hands lifting tasks, were very high in the 300~317% of the one of two-hands lifting tasks. The moments at L5/S1 of one-hand lifting tasks were 126~166% of the one of two-hands lifting tasks. Conclusion: It is concluded that the effect of workload for one-hand lifting is greater than two-hands lifting. It can also be concluded that asymmetrical effect of one-hand lifting is much greater than workload effect. Application: The results of this study can be used to provide guidelines of recommended safe weights for tasks involved in one-hand lifting activity.

  • In order to effectively understand the perception of businesses and consumers, the Bank of Korea has released Economic Sentiment Index (ESI), a composite indicator of business survey index (BSI) and consumer survey index (CSI), since 2102. The usefulness of ESI has been widely recognized. However, there exists a margin for improvement in terms of its predictive power. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of ESI and improved the ESI by complementing its defaults. Our results of empirical analysis proved that dynamic optimal weight navigation process using the sliding window method is very useful in determining the optimal weights of configurations item of ESI based on economic situation.

  • This paper focuses on dispatching strategy for AGVs(Automated Guided Vehicle). The goal of AGV dispatching problem is allocating jobs to AGVs to minimizing QC delay and AGV total travel distance. Due to the highly dynamic nature of container terminal environment, the effect of dispatching is hard to predict thus it leads to frequent modification of dispatching results. Given this situation, single rule-based approach is widely used due to its simplicity and small computational cost. However, single rule-based approach has a limitation that cannot guarantee a satisfactory performance for the various performance measures. In this paper, dispatching strategy based on multicriteria heuristics is proposed. Proposed strategy consists of multiple decision criteria. A muti-objective evolutionary algorithm is applied to optimize weights of those criteria. The result of simulation experiment shows that the proposed approach outperforms single rule-based dispatching approaches.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to compare one-hand and two-hands lowering activity in terms of biomechanical stress for the range of lowering heights from knuckle height to 10cm above floor level. Background: Even though two-hands lifting/lowering activity of manual materials handling tasks are prevalent at the industrial site, many manual materials handling tasks which require the worker to perform one-hand lifting/lowering are also very common at the industrial site and forestry and farming. Method: Eight male subjects were asked to perform lowering tasks using both a one-handed as well as a two-handed lowering technique. Trunk muscle electromyographic activity was recorded while the subjects performed the lowering tasks. This information was used as input to an EMG-assisted free-dynamic biomechanical model that predicted spinal loading in three dimensions. Results: It was shown that for the left-hand lowering tasks, the values of moment, lateral shear force, A-P shear force, and compressive force were increased by the average 6%, as the workload was increased twice from 7.5kg to 15kg. For the right-hand lowering task, these were increased by the average 17%. For the two-hands lowering tasks, these were increased by the average 14%. Conclusion: Even though the effect of workload on the biomechanical stress for both one-hand and two-hands lowering tasks is not so significant for the workload less than 15kg, it can be claimed that the biomechanical stress for one-hand lowering is greater than for two-hands lowering tasks. Therefore, it can be concluded that asymmetrical lowering posture would give greater influence on the biomechanical stress than the workload effect for one-hand lowering activity. Application: The result of this study may be used to provide guidelines of recommended safe weights for tasks involved in one-hand lowering activity.

  • Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEG)-poly(${\beta}$-amino ester) (PAE) block copolymers were synthesized using a Michael-type step polymerization, and the construction of pH-sensitive polymeric micelles (PM) investigated. The ${\beta}$-amino ester block of the block copolymers functioned as a pH-sensitive moiety as well as a hydrophobic block in relation to the ionization of PAE, while PEG acted as a hydrophilic block, regardless of ionization. The synthesized polymers were characterized using $^1H-NMR$, with their molecular weights measured using gel permeation chromatography. The $pK_b$ values of the pH-sensitive polymers were measured using a titration method. The pH-sensitivity and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the block copolymers in PBS solution were estimated using fluorescence spectroscopy. The pH dependent micellization behaviors with various bisacrylate esters varied within a narrow pH range. The critical micelle concentration at pH 7.4 decreased from 0.032 to 0.004 mg/mL on increasing the number of methyl group in the bisacrylate from 4 to 10. Also, the particle size of the block copolymer micelles was determined using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The DLS results revealed the micelles had an average size below 100 nm. These pH-sensitive polymeric micelles may be good carriers for the delivery of an anticancer drug.

  • The Counterpropagation algorithm(CP) is a combination of Kohonen competition network as a hidden layer and the outstar structure of Grossberg as an output layer. CP has been used in many real applications for pattern matching, classification, data compression and statistical analysis since its learning speed is faster than other network models. However, due to the Kohonen layer's winner-takes-all strategy, it often causes instable learning and/or incorrect pattern classification when patterns are relatively diverse. Also, it is often criticized by the sensitivity of performance on the learning rate. In this paper, we propose an enhanced CP that has multiple Kohonen layers and dynamic controlling facility of learning rate using the frequency of winner neurons and the difference between input vector and the representative of winner neurons for stable learning and momentum learning for controlling weights of output links. A real world application experiment - pattern recognition from passport information - is designed for the performance evaluation of this enhanced CP and it shows that our proposed algorithm improves the conventional CP in learning and recognition performance.

  • Plants are exposed to biotic stresses caused by pathogen attack and complex abiotic stresses including heat and drought by dynamic climate changes. To alleviate these stresses, we investigated two bacterial stains, H26-2 and H30-3 in two cultivars ('Ryeokkwang' and 'Buram-3-ho') of Chinese cabbage in plastic pots in a greenhouse. We evaluated effects of bacterial strains on plant growth-promotion and mitigation of heat and drought stresses; the role of exopolysaccharides as one of bacterial determinants on alleviating stresses; biocontrol activity against soft rot caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum PCC21. Strains H26-2 and H30-3 significantly increased fresh weights compared to a $MgSO_4$ solution; reduced leaf wilting and promoted recovery after re-watering under heat and drought stresses. Chinese cabbages treated with H26-2 and H30-3 increased leaf abscisic acid (ABA) content and reduced stomatal opening after stresses treatments, in addition, these strains stably colonized and maintained their populations in rhizosphere during heat and drought stresses. As well as tested bacterial cells, exopolysaccharides (EPS) of H30-3 could be one of bacterial determinants for alleviation of tested stresses in Chinese cabbages, however, the effects were different to cultivars of Chinese cabbages. In addition to bacterial activity to abiotic stresses, H30-3 could suppress incidence (%) of soft rot in 'Buram-3-ho'. The tested strains were identified as Bacillus aryabhattai H26-2 and B. siamensis H30-3 based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Taken together, H26-2 and H30-3 could be candidates for both plant growth promotion and mitigation of heat and drought stresses in Chinese cabbage.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the stresses by impact loads on front-end loaders attached to tractors using flexible multi-body dynamics. The model was designed and validated by comparing previous experimental data with the simulation data obtained in this study. Nine sets of conditions were designed using three weights (500, 300, and 100 kg) loaded inside a bucket and three heights (1700, 1350, and 1000 mm) of the bucket from ground level. A parametric study was carried out at five locations for two types of parts of a front-end loader. All the safety factors for the five locations under all conditions were calculated and were greater than 1. Thus, the designs of the front-end loaders were structurally safe. Based on this study, front-end loaders attached to tractors can be designed effectively in terms of cost and safety.
