Visual Cells of the Introduced Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus (Pisces; Centropomidae) of Korea

  • The bluegill Lepomis macrochirus is an invasive species, not native to Korea, introduced for aquaculture. This species is ranked as a new top predator due to its massive aquatic carnivorous and herbivorous nature by acute vision and the absence of a natural enemy. The visual cells of the retina of L. macrochirus are composed of short single cones and equal double cones and long and bulky rods by light and electron microscopes. In particular, the cones show a regular square mosaic arrangement. This pattern is widely considered as a strong predator. With regard to the visual system, this mosaic pattern may closely be related to a dynamic visual acuity to track and hunt prey.

  • Spontaneous dissection of the anterior cerebral artery is an unusual cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage. We present a case of a dissecting aneurysm of the anterior cerebral artery presenting with subarachnoid hemorrhage. A 51-year-old woman presented to our hospital with severe headache. Neurological examination demonstrated neck stiffness, decreased visual acuity of the left eye, and left ankle weakness. Computed tomographic scans showed subarachnoid hemorrhage. The initial cerebral angiogram demonstrated a slightly narrowed caliber and mild poststenotic dilation of the right A1 segment. A second cerebral angiogram 14 days later revealed no change in the focal narrowing of the proximal A1 segment but marked progression of the dilatation of the distal A1 segment. Right pterional craniotomy was performed. A sausage-like dilation of the right A1 segment was found with no definite mural hematoma. This abnormal right A1 segment was wrapped with a Sundt clip. A postoperative computed tomographic scan revealed Infarction of the right head of the caudate nucleus and the anterior limb of the right internal capsule. If a dissecting aneurysm is suspected, serial angiographic studies should be performed because of the possibility of dynamic changes over a short period.

Examination of Refractive Correction and Accommodative Ability on Myopic Elementary School Children Wearing Glasses in Jinju City (진주지역 근시 안경착용 초등학생들의 굴절교정상태와 조절기능의 검사)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the condition of refractive correction on wearing glasses currently of elementary school children and their accommodative ability in Jinju city. Methods: Objective refraction, subjective refraction, amplitude of accommodation, negative and positive accommodation, accommodative facility, and dynamic retinoscopy were examined on 60 elemenary school children who aged 8~12 wearing myopiacorrected glasses. Results: The condition of refractive corrections was distributed that a case of full correction was 11.7%, a case of low correction with more than 0.8 visual acuity (VA) was 10%, and a case of low correction with less than 0.8 VA was 78.3% in wearing glasses currently. In results from examination of accommodative ability, the number of children having accommodative anomaly is 8 persons (13.3%), they were divided into accommodation insufficiency (4 persons), accommodative facility insufficiency (2 persons), accommodation excess (1 person), and accommodation insufficiency related to ocular function (1 person). Conclusions: It is demanded a periodic inspection of refractive correction to growing children, and the refractive correction after due consideration to accommodative ability is really needed.

Comparison of clinical techniques to assess objectively accommodative response (타각적 조절 반응 평가의 임상 기술들의 비교)

  • Assessment of the accommodative response is an essential part of the optometric examination. This study measured objectively the accommodation responses those were measured by Autorefractor, MEM retinoscopy and Nott dynamic retinoscopy, and investigate the correlation and difference the results. Twenty-seven college students with normal visual acuity aged 19 to 29 years (mean $22.7{\pm}2.43$ years) participated in this study. Their accommodative responses to accommodative demand of 4D (25cm) were measured with Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor, MEM retinoscopy and Nott dynamic retinoscopy. The accommodative responses to accommodative demand of 4D were $3.70{\pm}0.25D$ by Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor, $3.58{\pm}0.30D$ by MEM retinoscopy and $3.77{\pm}0.29D$ by Nott dynamic retinoscopy, respectively. There were high correlations among the three techniques (p<0.05). MEM retinoscopy was measured $0.19{\pm}0.13D$ lower than Nott dynamic retinoscopy (p<0.05) and it was measured $0.12{\pm}0.24D$ lower than Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between Nott dynamic retinoscopy and Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor (p>0.05). MEM retinoscopy showed lesser accommodative responses than Nott dynamic retinoscopy and Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor. Author suggest that Nott dynamic retinoscopy may use Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001 Autorefractor interchangeably to evaluate accommodative responses expect MEM retinoscopy.

Changes of Dynamic Stereoacuity Depending on Distance between Rods and Rod Thickness in Three Rods Test (세막대 검사에서 막대 간 거리와 막대두께 차이에 의한 동적입체시력의 변화)

  • Purpose: To determine whether the distance between objects and the size of object are factors to be able to affect dynamic stereoacuity. Methods: Subjects were 37 adults (26 males and 11 females) with an average age of $23.89{\pm}1.76$. Refractive error was fully corrected for all subjects and each visual acuity of them was over 0.9. Three rods test was performed for measurement of stereoacuity. The viewing angles from left rod to right rod were set $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and $15^{\circ}$ and the rod thickness used 7 mm, 14 mm, and 21 mm, respectively. Stereoacuity was repeatedly measured three times in each test condition at 2.5 m distance, and reported the average value of them. Results: When rod thickness was 7 mm or 14 mm, dynamic stereoacuity decreased as the viewing angle increased, and they were significantly decreased (p<0.01) at viewing angles of $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ as compared with that of at $5^{\circ}$, respectively. When rod thickness was 21 mm, dynamic stereoacuity decreased as the viewing angle increased, especially, that of at $15^{\circ}$ decreased significantly (p<0.01) as compared with that of at $5^{\circ}$. The dynamic stereoacuity depending on the rod thickness have an increasing tendency as the rod thickness increased. Conclusions: The viewing angle between objects and the size of viewing object were factors that affect to dynamic stereoacuity.
