  • The current analytical techniques for R/C elements under severe dynamic repeated loads, like earthquake or impact, has two major problems; one is that the effects of strain rate are not considered and the other one is the current model was developed based on flexural behavior only. Thus, this study develops a computer software that can idealize the flexural and shear behavior of R/C elements using several parameters and also can consider the effects of strain rate. The analytical results using the developed analytical technique were compared with several experimental results and were generally satisfied.

  • This article explores a constitutive equation that is able to correlate stress, strain and strain rate. In order to show the advantages of the constitutive equation here proposed and how its material parameters are obtained, data extracted from the literature, for materials as different as polymers and metallic alloys, are used. Finite element simulation of the impact behaviour of a beam is presented to highlight the care one needs to exercise when using the more traditional Cowper-Symonds equation. The present constitutive equation has shown to be accurate for a wide range of strains, stresses and strain rates.

  • This paper addresses a viscoplastic constitutive model that allows a consistent way of modeling positive and negative rate sensitivities of flow stress concerned with dynamic strain aging. Based on the concept of continuum mechanics, a phenomenological constitutive model includes the use of a yield surface within the framework of unified viscoplasticity theory. To model negative rate sensitivity, rate-dependent back stress is introduced and flow stress in fully developed inelastic deformation regime is thus decomposed into the plastic contribution of rate independency and the viscous one of rate dependency.

  • The nonlinear behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) frame structure are investigated by numerical simulation method with 3-D finite fiber elements. The dynamic characteristics and the seismic performance of the RAC frame structure are analyzed and validated with the shaking table test results. Specifically, the natural frequency and the typical responses (e.g., storey deformation, capacity curve, etc.) from Model 1 (exclusion of strain rate effect) and Model 2 (inclusion of strain rate effect) are analyzed and compared. It is revealed that Model 2 is more likely to provide a better match between the numerical simulation and the shaking table test as key attributes of seismic behaviors of the frame structure are captured by this model. For the purpose to examine how seismic behaviors of the RAC frame structure vary under different strain rates in a real seismic situation, a numerical simulation is performed by varying the strain rate. The storey displacement response and the base shear for the RAC frame structure under different strain rates are investigated and analyzed. It is implied that the structural behavior of the RAC frame structure is significantly influenced by the strain rate effect. On one hand, the storey displacements vary slightly in the trend of decreasing with the increasing strain rate. On the other hand, the base shear of the RAC frame structure under dynamic loading conditions increases with gradually increasing amplitude of the strain rate.

  • The interest in the dynamic properties of soils has increased strongly because of earthquake, heavy traffic, and foundations undergo high amplitude of vibrations. Most of soils in Korean peninsula are composed of granite soils, especially the decomposed mudstone soils are widely spread in Pohang areas, Kyong-buk province. Therefore, it Is very important to investigate the dynamic properties of these types of soils. The most important soil parameters under dynamic loadings are shear modulus and material dampings. Furthermore, few definitive data exist that can evaluate the behavior of unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under dynamic loading conditions. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the shear modulus and damping ratio due to a surface tension for the unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils ulder low and high strain amplitude, For this purpose, the resonant column test and the cyclic triaxial test were performed. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation under low and strain amplitude is 32 ∼ 37% which is higher than that of decomposed granite due to the amount of fine particles as well as the type and proportion of chief rock-forming minerals.

  • In the high-speed forming analysis, dynamic material properties considering a high strain rate are required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiment was performed for measuring dynamic material properties under high strain rate. The pulse shaping method was used to improve the accuracy of the SHPB experiment. A pulse shaper attached to the front of the incident bar was used for specimen dynamic stress equilibrium through stress wave control. Numerical analysis and SHPB test were performed to verify whether the pulse shaper affects the dynamic stress equilibrium in copper and Al6061 specimens. The results of SHPB test and numerical analysis show that the pulse shaper contributes to the dynamic stress equilibrium. Based on the improved stress equilibrium using a pulse shaper, the flow stress curves for copper and Al6061 materials were obtained at strain rates of 1344.4/sec and 1291.6/sec, respectively.

  • Studies of soil dynamic properties in Malaysia are still very limited. This study aims to investigate the dynamic properties of two selected tropical residual soils (i.e., Sandy Clay and Sandy Silt) and a sand mining trail (Silty Sand) in Peninsular Malaysia using 1g shaking table test. The use of 1g shaking table test for soil dynamic testing is often constrained to large strain level and small confining pressure only. Three new experimental setups, namely large laminar shear box test (LLSBT), small chamber test with positive air pressure (SCT), and small sample test with suction (SSTS) are attempted with the aims of these experimental setups are capable of evaluating the dynamic properties of soils covering a wider range of shear strain and confining pressure. The details of each experimental setup are described explicitly in this paper. Experimental results show that the combined use of the LLSBT and SCT is capable of rendering soil dynamic properties covering a strain range of 0.017%-1.48% under confining pressures of 5-100 kPa. The studied tropical residual soils in Malaysia behaved neither as pure sand nor clay, but show a relatively good agreement with the dynamic properties of residual soils in Singapore. Effects of confining pressure and plasticity index on the studied tropical residual soils are found to be insignificant in this particular study.

  • A numerical analysis was performed to predict flow curves and dynamic recrystallization behaviors of Al-5wt%Mg alloy on the basis of results of hot compression tests. The hot compression tests were carred out in the ranges of 350 ~ 500 ${^\circ}C$ and 5 ${\times}{10^-3}$ ~ 3 ${\times}{10^0}$/sec to obtain the Zener-Hollomon parameter Z. The modelling equation for flow stress was a function of strain, strain rate, temperature. The influence of these variables was quantifield using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. In the modelling equation, the effects of strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization were taken into consideration. Therefore, the modelling stress-strain curves of Al-5wt%Mg alloy were in good agreement with experimental results. Finally, the dynamic recrystallization kinetics were illustrated through the inspection of microstructure after deformation.
