A division-of-amplitude type photopolarimeter has been constructed for the analysis of the dynamic optical characteristics of liquid crystal panels, one of the essential components of liquid crystal displays. In this instrument an incoming light ray, whose state of polarization is to be determined, is divided into three rays of nearly same intensities and of identical polarization state by using NPBS'(non-polarizing beam splitters). Each of the three rays is further divided into two components of orthogonal polarization states by using a PBS(polarizing cube beamsplitter) or by using a combination of a quater wave plate followed by a PBS. The intensity of each ray is measured by using a photodiode to produce a set of six photo-signals, which in turn are converted into four Stokes parameters describing the state of polarization of the incoming ray. Performance test of the insrument shows that its time resolution is 80 $mutextrm{s}$, accuracy $\pm$0.3 degrees when the state of polarization of the incoming ray is representated on the Poincare sphere.
To broaden the understanding of classical Cepheid structure, evolution and atmospheres, we have extended our continuing secret lives of Cepheids program by obtaining XMM/Chandra X-ray observations, and Hubble space telescope (HST) / cosmic origins spectrograph (COS) FUV-UV spectra of the bright, nearby Cepheids Polaris, ${\delta}$ Cep and ${\beta}$ Dor. Previous studies made with the international ultraviolet explorer (IUE) showed a limited number of UV emission lines in Cepheids. The well-known problem presented by scattered light contamination in IUE spectra for bright stars, along with the excellent sensitivity & resolution combination offered by HST/COS, motivated this study, and the spectra obtained were much more rich and complex than we had ever anticipated. Numerous emission lines, indicating $10^4$ K up to ${\sim}3{\times}10^5$ K plasmas, have been observed, showing Cepheids to have complex, dynamic outer atmospheres that also vary with the photospheric pulsation period. The FUV line emissions peak in the phase range ${\varphi}{\approx}0.8-1.0$ and vary by factors as large as $10{\times}$. A more complete picture of Cepheid outer atmospheres is accomplished when the HST/COS results are combined with X-ray observations that we have obtained of the same stars with XMM-Newton & Chandra. The Cepheids detected to date have X-ray luminosities of log $L_X{\approx}28.5-29.1$ ergs/sec, and plasma temperatures in the $2-8{\times}106$ K range. Given the phase-timing of the enhanced emissions, the most plausible explanation is the formation of a pulsation-induced shocks that excite (and heat) the atmospheric plasmas surrounding the photosphere. A pulsation-driven ${\alpha}^2$ equivalent dynamo mechanism is also a viable and interesting alternative. However, the tight phase-space of enhanced emission (peaking near 0.8-1.0 ${\varphi}$) favor the shock heating mechanism hypothesis.

Kyung Hee University has been developing a CubeSat for the space science mission called SIGMA (Scientific cubesat with Instrument for Global Magnetic field and rAdiation), which includes TEPC (Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter) and a magnetometer. SIGMA has a 3-unit CubeSat, and the weight is about 3.2 kg. The main payload is TEPC which can measure the Linear Energy Transfer (LET) spectrum and calculate the equivalent dose for the complicated radiation field in the space. The magnetometer is a secondary payload using a miniaturized fluxgate magnetometer. We expect it to have a 1 nT resolution in the dynamic range of ${\pm}65535$ nT. An Attitude Control System (ACS) spins the SIGMA spacecraft 4 rpm with the spin axis perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. Full duplex communication is consists of VHF uplink and S-band and UHF downlink. In this paper, we introduce the system design and the scientific purpose of the SIGMA CubeSat mission.
In the present study, we developed a portable GC module for real-time, quantitative determinations of gas mixtures in air sample. Capillary or packed column was coiled together with a heater wire and thermocouple in a small case. Together with the small and light weight sensors and valves as well as the rechargeable carrier gas canister, which permits collection and separation of samples, this system can determine the components of complex mixtures of air contaminants at low concentrations with a duty cycle of 10 min. When measured the various samples with a FID and TCD, the system showed, for a capillary column, a good resolution (R=8.3), high sensitivity, reproducibility, and linear dynamic range greater than three orders of magnitude. These results indicate that the portable GC module is expected to be used for a wide range of applications, particularly for in situ environmental monitoring, chemical processes, and regulation of contaminant emission.

Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modem air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras($1280pixel{\times}1024pixel$) were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.
Background: Ginseng (the roots of Panax ginseng Meyer) is a well-known traditional Oriental medicine and is now widely used as a health food. It contains several types of ginsenosides, which are considered the major active medicinal components of ginseng. It has recently been reported that the qualitative and quantitative properties of ginsenosides found in ginseng may differ, depending on cultivation regions, ages, species, and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to study these variations with respect to cultivation ages and regions. Methods: In this study, 3-6-yr-old roots of P. ginseng were collected from three different cultivation regions. The contents of five ginsenosides (Rb1, Rd, Rc, Re, and Rgl) were measured by rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadruple-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The Kruskal-Wallis Rank sum test and multiple t test were used for comparative analysis of the data to evaluate the dynamic changes in the accumulation of these ginsenosides affected by cultivation regions and ages. Results: The content and composition of ginsenosides varied significantly among specimens collected from different cultivation regions and having different cultivation ages. For all samples, the content of Rg1 and Re ginsenosides increases with age and this rate of increase is different for each sample. The contents of Rb1, Rc, and Rd varied with cultivation ages in samples from different cultivation regions; especially, Rb1 from a 6-yr-old root showed approximately twofold variation among the samples from three cultivation regions. Furthermore, the content of Rb1 highly correlated with that of Rd (r = 0.89 across all locations and ages). Conclusion: In our study, only the contents of ginsenosides Rg1 and Re were affected by the root age. Ginsenosides Rb1, Rc, and Rd varied widely with ages in samples from different cultivation regions.

A two-axis gimbal-type antenna for a Compact Advanced Satellite (CAS) is used to efficiently transmit high resolution image data to a ground station. In this study, we designed the structure of a two-axis gimbal-type antenna while applying a launch lock device to secure its structural safety under a launch environment. To validate the effectiveness of the structural design, a structural analysis of the antenna was performed. First, a modal analysis was performed to investigate the dynamic responses of the antenna with and without the mechanical constraints of the launch lock device. In addition, a quasi-static analysis was performed to confirm the structural safety of the antenna structure and bolt I/Fs between the antenna base and the satellite. The suitable range of constraint force on the launch lock device was also determined to ensure the structural safety and mechanical gapping of the ball & socket interfaces, which places multi-constraints on the azimuth and elevation stage of the antenna.

This work describes a 13b 100 MS/s 0.13 um CMOS four-stage pipeline ADC for 3G communication systems. The proposed SHA-free ADC employs a range-scaling technique based on switched-capacitor circuits to properly handle a wide input range of $2V_{P-P}$ using a single on-chip reference of $1V_{P-P}$. The proposed range scaling makes the reference buffers keep a sufficient voltage headroom and doubles the offset tolerance of a latched comparator in the flash ADC1 with a doubled input range. A two-step reference selection technique in the back-end 5b flash ADC reduces both power dissipation and chip area by 50%. The prototype ADC in a 0.13 um CMOS demonstrates the measured differential and integral nonlinearities within 0.57 LSB and 0.99 LSB, respectively. The ADC shows a maximum signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio of 64.6 dB and a maximum spurious-free dynamic range of 74.0 dB at 100 MS/s, respectively. The ADC with an active die area of 1.2 $mm^2$ consumes 145.6 mW including high-speed reference buffers and 91 mW excluding buffers at 100 MS/s and a 1.3 V supply voltage.
The surface parameters associated with the land are usually dependent on the climate, and many physical processes that are displayed in the image sensed from the land then exhibit temporal variation with seasonal periodicity. An adaptive feedback system proposed in this study reconstructs a sequence of images remotely sensed from the land surface having the physical processes with seasonal periodicity. The harmonic model is used to track seasonal variation through time, and a Gibbs random field (GRF) is used to represent the spatial dependency of digital image processes. In this study, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was computed for one week composites of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery over the Korean peninsula for 1996 and 2000 using a dynamic technique, and the adaptive reconstruction of harmonic model was then applied to the NDVI time series for tracking changes on the ground surface. The results show that the adaptive approach is potentially very effective for continuously monitoring changes on near-real time.
An accurate mass and isotope ratio were determined using a gas chromatography/time of flight mass spectrometer in CI positive mode for the identification of unknown metabolites. High mass tune was used to improve the ion intensity of $[M+H]^+$. Chromatographic resolution and dynamic range enhancement were performed to obtain more reliable accurate masses and correct isotope abundance ratios. Average absolute errors of mass and isotope ratios for 24 reference metabolite -TMS (trimethylsilyl) derivatives were 6.8 ppm, 1.5% of (M+1/M ratio) and 1.7% of (M+2/M ratio), respectively. The correct formulas of twenty one compound were retrieved within top-2 hit from the heuristic algorithm for elemental composition using each accurate mass and isotope abundance ratio.
