  • This paper presents a fault detection and diagnosis methodology based on weighted symptom model and pattern matching between the coming fault propagation trend and the simulated one. In the first step, backward chaining is used to find the possible cause candidates for the faults. The weighted symptom model is used to generate those candidates. The weight is determined from dynamic simulation. Using WSM, the methodology can generate the cause candidates and rank them according to the probability. Second, the fault propagation trends identified from the partial or complete sequence of measurements are compared with the standard fault propagation trends stored a priori. A pattern matching algorithm based on a number of triangular episodes is used to effectively match those trends. The standard trends have been generated using dynamic simulation and stored a priori. The proposed methodology has been illustrated using two case studies, and the results showed satisfactory diagnostic resolution.

  • This paper presents the results of a monodirectional shaking table test on a full-scale unreinforced masonry cross vault characterized by asymmetric boundary conditions. The specimen represents a vault of the mosque of Dey in Algiers (Algeria), reproducing in detail the mechanical characteristics of masonry, and the constructive details including the presence of some peculiar wooden logs placed within the vault's abutments. The vault was tested with and without the presence of two steel bars which connect two opposite sides of the vault. The dynamic behaviour of both the vault's configurations were studied by using an incremental dynamic analysis up to the collapse of the vault without the steel bars. The use of an innovative high-resolution 3D optical system allowed measure displacement data of the cross vault during the shake table tests. The experimental results were analysed in terms of evolution of damage mechanisms, and in-plane and out-of-plane deformations. Moreover, the dynamic properties of the structure were investigated by means of an experimental modal analysis.

  • Robot position/force control has been a difficult task owing to the interaction between a robot and an environment with a rather high stiffness. In addition to the dynamic instability, the interaction causes the following problem : 1) chattering at steady-state, 2) dynamic coupling effect of robot, and 3) performance degradation due to a titled environment. To solve the problem, the Time Delay Control(TDC), which has been known to be quiet robust to plant uncertainties and disturbances, has been applied. In conjunction to TDC, the following three ideas were also used : 1) To reduce the amplitude of the chattering at the steady state, a novel scheme was adopted to enhance the resolution type solution of A/D conversion for the force sensor. 2) To reduce the dynamic coupling, a trajectory type position command was tried on a comparative basis to the step command, as well as a more accurate mass matrix was used instead of the constant mass matrix. 3) And finally to improve the performance in the tilted environment, force derivatives instead of position derivatives were used in the TDC law. Computer simulations and experiments resulted in obvious improvements on the quality of the hybrid control, thereby clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of TDC with the proposed ideas.

  • Wireless LAN is a rather mature communication technology connecting mobile terminals. IEEE 802.11 is a representative protocol among Wireless LAN technologies. The basic medium access control (MAC) mechanism of IEEE 802.11 is called distnbuted coordination function (DCF). DCF shows poor throughput and high drop rate as the number of stations and offered traffic load increase. In this paper we propose an effective mechanism using dynamic mimmum contention window(CWmin) in wireless LAN~ and show that performance improves via simulations. Proposed dynamic CWmin scheme exhibits superior performance as the number of stations and offered load grow. As, our proposed scheme is expected to be more effective in highly densed wireless LAN environment.

  • We propose that a subjective image quality assessment based on objective image quality factors in order to evaluate objectively preference of consumers. In other words, we define objective image quality factors which are easy to accept by manufacturers and they are composed of subjective image quality assessment questionnaires. Also, portrait image is selected by stimulus in order to persue easiness of evaluation for the general subjects. Throughout a subjective image quality assessment model, we evaluate recognition of image quality by consumers and analyze the effectiveness of correlation in terms of the final image quality preference. Analyzing the relationship between image quality factors, we can figure out the preferable image quality and confirm the positive effects on consumers' recognition of image quality. In the results, there are strong relationship between preference and color reproduction, dynamic range, noise, and resolution respectively. especially, the characteristic of portrait, there is high correlation between color reproduction and preference.

  • A new methodology to detect forest fire burnt scars at near real time using MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data is presented here with a goal of introducing a new and improved capability to detect forest fire burnt scars in Thailand. This new technology is expected to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the forest fire tackling resources distribution and management of the country. Using MODIS data in burnt scars detection has two major advantages - high availability of data and high resolution per performance ratio. Results prove the near real time algorithm suitable and working well in order to monitor the forest fire dynamic movement. The algorithm is based on the threshold separated linear equation of burnt and un-burnt. A ground truth experiment confirms the burnt and un-burnt? areas characteristics (temperature and NDVI). A threshold line on a scatter plot of Band I and Band 2 is determined to separate the burnt from un-burnt pixels. The different threshold values of NDVI and temperature use to identify pixels' anomaly, abnormal low NDVI and high temperature. The overlay (superimpose) method is used to verify burnt pixels. Since forest fire is a dynamic phenomenon, MODIS burnt scars information is suiting well to fill in the missing temporal information of LANDSAT for the forest fire control managing strategy in Thailand. This study was conducted in the Huai-Kha-Kaeng (HKK) Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

  • This paper describes a string resonator that is used for the interrogation system of a Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) strain sensor. The strain on the fiber piece is calculated from the measured frequency based on that the natural frequency of a string is a function of the applied absolute strain. Existing research considered a fiber as a string, but a fiber is not a string in the strict sense due to its bending stiffness, thus the fiber should be modeled as a beam accompanied with an axial force. In the vibration modeling, the relationship between the strain and the natural frequency is derived, and then the resonance condition is described in terms of both the phase and the mode shape for sustaining resonant motion. Several experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed model of the fiber. The performance of the string resonator is analyzed by measuring the frequency change according to the applied strains in the dynamic range of 1100$\mu\varepsilon$ referred to the displacement from capacitance sensor. From the experimental results, the implemented string resonator provides the accuracy of $\pm$3$\mu\varepsilon$, the quasi-static resolution of ~0.1$\mu\varepsilon$(rms) which amount to be $\pm$0.17$\mu\textrm{m}$ and ~6nm respectively, in case of fiber length of 56mm. For a dynamic strain, it can provide the accuracy of ~3$\mu\varepsilon$ until the frequency comes to 8Hz. As a consequence, the string resonator proposed for FBG sensor provides the high accuracy and the high resolution in strain measurement, and also it is expecting to be used, for the application, to not only strain but also displacement measuring device.

  • This paper propose a contention resolution policy featuring dynamic change of the threshold for the occupancy of the input buffer for an input buffering ATM switching architecture and its hardware implementation strategy. The strategy is provided with the aim of the simple structure that achieves the reduction of the signal path and the power consumption. The threshold is changed dynamically every time slot based both the arrived of cells and the cell service resulting from the contention resolution. The performance on the cell loss of the proposed policy is performed and compared with the conventional policy under the diverse traffic conditions through both the analysis based ont the Markov chain and the simulation.
