In the present work, hot workability of particulate-reinforced Al6061-20%SiC composite produced by direct hot extrusion technique was studied. Uniaxial hot compression test at various temperatures and strain rates was used and the workability behavior was evaluated from the flow curves and the attendant microstructures. It was shown that the presence of SiC particles in the soft Al6061 matrix deteriorates the hot workability. Bulging of the specimens and flow lines were observed, which indicate the plastic instability during hot working. Microstructure of the composites after hot deformation was found to be heterogeneous, i.e. the reinforcement clusters were observed at the flow lines. The mechanism of deformation was found to be controlled primarily by dynamic recrystallization.
Effects of microstructure on the toughness of low carbon HSLA steels were investigated. Nickel decreased the ferrite-austenite transformation temperature, resulted in increase of the fraction of bainitic ferrite. However, it was decreased with increasing deformation amount at austenite region. Since fine austenite grains formed by dynamic recrystallization under large strain transformed to acicular ferrite or granular bainite rather than bainitic ferrite. The effective grain size, thus, was decreased by deformation and it resulted in lower ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The bainitic ferrite was thought to inhibit the fracture crack initiation and to delay the crack propagation by its high dislocation density and hard interlath $2^{nd}$ phase constituents, respectively. Thus, DBTT was also decreased by Ni addition in low carbon HSLA steels.
Friction stir weldability of AZ31B Mg alloy was studied using microstructural observation and mechanical tests. Defect free joints was obtained under the condition of 2000rpm-100mm/min. In TMAZ, a lot of twin deformation were observed due to the mechanical effect of the FSW tool and thus relatively high hardness was obtained. In SZ, the twin deformation was disappeared by recovery and the hardness decreased because the. grain structure was coarsened by dynamic recrystallization and grain growth. The Al-Mn precipitates were observed throughout the joint regions. On the other hand, $$\beta$-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ intermetallic compounds were not observed in either of the zone. The joint efficiency was about 80% and the impact value of the joint was almost equal to that of base metal.
Hot torsion tests were conducted to investigate the high temperature deformation behavior of $Al_{85}Ni_{10}Y_5$ alloy extrudates fabricated with amorphous ribbons. The powder metallurgy routes, hot pressing and hot extrusion were used to fabricate the extrudates. Thermal properties of amorphous ribbons with different thickness as a function of aging temperature were studied by thin film x-ray dif-fraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The Al phase crystallite firstly formed in the amorphous ribbons and its crystallization temperature($T_x$)Was ~210${\circ}C$ During the processings of consolidation and extrusion, nano-grained structure(~100 nm) was formed in the Al85Ni10Y5 alloy extrudates. The as-extrudated Al85Ni10Y5 alloy and the $Al_{85}Ni_{10}Y_5$ alloy annealed at 250${\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed a flow curve of DRV(dynamic recovery) during hot deformation at 400-550${\circ}C$. On the other hand, the $Al_{85}Ni_{10}Y_5$ alloy annealed at 400${\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed a flow curve of DRX(dynamic recrys-tallization) during hot deformation at 450-500${\circ}C$. Also the flow stress and flow strain of the $Al_{85}Ni_{10}Y_5$ alloy extrudate annealed at 400${\circ}C$ were higher than those at 250${\circ}C$.
In this study, changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast and extruded Al-2Li-1Ce alloy materials were investigated as the Mg content was varied. The density decreased to 2.485, 2.46 and 2.435 g/cm3 when the Mg content in the Al-2Li-1Ce alloy was increased to 2, 4 and 6 wt%, respectively. Intermetallic compounds of Al11Ce3 were observed in all alloys, while the β-phase of Al3Mg2 was observed in alloys containing 6 wt% of Mg. In the extruded material, with increasing Mg content the average grain size decreased to 84.8, 71.6 and 36.2 ㎛, and the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries (greater than 15°) increased to 82.8 %, 88.6 %, and 91.8 %, respectively. This occurred because the increased Mg content promotes dynamic recrystallization during hot extrusion. Tensile test results showed that as the Mg content increased, both the yield strength and tensile strength increased. The yield strength reached 86.1, 107.3, and 186.4 MPa, and the tensile strength reached 215.2, 285, and 360.5 MPa, respectively. However, it is worth noting that the ductility decreased to 27.78 %, 25.65 %, and 20.72 % as the Mg content increased. This reduction in ductility is attributed to the strengthening effect resulting from the increased amount of dissolved Mg, and grain refinement due to dynamic recrystallization.
The deformation behavior of NIMONIC 80A was studied in the high temperature range of $900{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and for strain rates varying between 0.02 and $20s^{-1}$ via the hot compression test. Processing maps for hot working were constructed on the basis of the power dissipation efficiency using a dynamic material model. The results showed that the strength during hot compression increased with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. At low strains, the processing map of NIMONIC 80A did not reveal any instability domain regardless of the strain rate and temperature. However, at high strains, the processing map exhibited an instability domain at a low strain rate of $0.2s^{-1}$ and within a temperature range of $900{\sim}960^{\circ}C$. In the instability domain, the deformed microstructure exhibited shear bands and carbide precipitation while, in the safe domain, full recrystallization occurred.
Titanium alloys have been attractive due to a high ratio of strength to weight as well as good corrosion resistance. However, strengthening causes a decrease in ductility in Ti alloys, as is usual in other alloys. For enhanced strength without ductility reduction, grain refinement and tensile properties were investigated as functions of thickness reduction of cold rolling and annealing condition in Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al alloy with a ${\beta}$ single phase. The average grain size of the specimen, which was cold-rolled by 90% and annealed at 700$^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, was decreased to approximately 19 ${\mu}m$. The grain refinement of 63 μm to 19 ${\mu}m$ increased yield stress by 90 MPa without a significant decrease in total elongation. The Ti-15-3 alloy exhibited very low work hardening during tensile test at a crosshead speed of 2 mm/min. This result was discussed based on dynamic recovery associated with dislocation annihilation in grain boundaries.
Purpose: Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of particle size as well as number of pass on surface microstructure and hardness of SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite fabricated by friction stir process (FSP). Method: SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite containing different size of SiC particle (i. e., $2{\mu}m$ and $8{\mu}m$) was fabricated by multi-pass FSP. Microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope and surface hardness was determined by Vickers hardness tester. Results: For all the FSPed specimens with and without hardening particles, grain size was refined due to dynamic recrystallization behavior. Surface hardness was observed to increase with decreasing particle size in the composite layer. Increasing number of FSP pass was effective for homogeneous distribution of the hardening particles and for resulting increase in surface hardness. Conclusion: FSP was effective to modify surface microstructure for improving surface hardness of SiC/AZ31 composite.
This study investigated Austenite Grain Size (AGS) distribution in Low-Speed Round-Oval Rolling. Rolling experiments were done along with the AGS numerical modeling to characterize the final AGS distribution and its kinetics behavior. For bar rolling experiment, we utilized the pilot rolling mill, operating at 34 fixed rpm, at POSCO Technical Research Laboratories. To investigate the microstructural observation, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis was combined with Hodgson's AGS evolution model. To consider the transient thermal history in the integrative AGS modeling, additivity rule was introduced. The integrated analysis revealed that static or meta-dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the AGS difference in the inner or outer region of rolled bar. Comparative study showed that the current AGS modeling approach can be used to model the overall AGS distribution in bar rolling processes. For more accurate AGS prediction, the AGS modeling method should be verified under the various rolling conditions such as different rolling speeds and different deformations.
In the present study, the blow forming characteristics of AZ31 sheet was investigated to test the feasibility of the practical application of wrought Mg alloys. Mg alloys have drawn a huge attention in the field of transportation and consumer electronics industries since it is the lightest alloy which could be industrially applicable. Most Mg alloy components have been fabricated by casting method. However, there have been a lot of research activities on the wrought alloys and their plastic forming process recently. Shallow cups for the small electronics cases have been stamped with warm die system. However, some technical issues will challenge Mg forming when large parts are considered with warm die system over $200^{\circ}C$. Most of all, thermal expansion of die system will deteriorate a die accuracy. On the other hand, blow forming does not have a problem with inaccuracy with die system. In this study, tensile tests were followed by blow forming at various temperature and pressure. AZ31 sheet showed a superplastic deformation behavior with extensive grain boundary sliding at the temperature above $300^{\circ}C$. However, the deformation behavior was likely to differ depending on stress condition.
