High temperature compression tests for newly developed Al-Zn-Mg alloy were carried out to investigate its hot deformation behavior and obtain deformation processing maps. In the compression tests, cylindrical specimens were deformed at high temperatures ($300-500^{\circ}C$) and strain rates of 0.001-1/s. Using the true stress-true strain curves obtained from the compression tests, processing maps were constructed by evaluating the power dissipation efficiency map and flow instability map. The processing map can be divided into three areas according to the microstructures of the deformed specimens: instability area with flow localization, instability area with mixed grains, and stable area with homogeneous grains resulting from continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). The results suggest that the optimal processing conditions for the Al-Zn-Mg alloy are $450^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate of 0.001/s, having a stable area with homogeneous grains resulting from CDRX.

To determine the origin of the inhomogeneous microstructure and texture observed in drawn and annealed high purity copper wires, two kinds of drawing process conditions and their influence was investigated. The regular condition, based on a symmetric die, and a condition designed intentionally to produce an inhomogeneous shear deformation using an asymmetric die were employed. The difference in intensity of <111>-<100> distributed texture between the two wires confirmed that the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition experienced a higher amount of shear deformation. The extensive shear strain in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition gave rise to inhomogeneous primary and secondary recrystallization behavior. After annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, grains with <100> texture, which were larger than the surrounding recrystallized grains, were extensively present on one half circle of the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition, while larger grains with <100> were sparsely observed around the middle region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. Interestingly, the area where the larger grains with <100> texture existed was identical to the area where the high shear strain occurred during drawing in both wires. During annealing at $400^{\circ}C$, grains with <112> texture started to grow abnormally at the center of both wires as a result of secondary recrystallization. After annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ grains with <112> due to secondary recrystallization occupied the entire region of the wire drawn under the regular condition. On the other hand, in the wire drawn under the asymmetric die condition and then annealed at $900^{\circ}C$, the <100> oriented grains as a result of the normal grain growth of the larger <100> grains which were observed after annealing at $200^{\circ}C$, coexisted with the abnormally grown <112> grains. These results indicate that dynamic recrystallization induced by the shear strain during drawing plays an important role in the inhomogeneity of the microstructure and texture of wires after annealing.

The mechanical and metallurgical properties of friction welded joints type 5052 Al alloy/A36 steel have been studied in this paper. The joint strength increased with increasing upset pressure and friction time till it reached the critical value. The joint strength was fixed at low strength compare to that of base metal in the case of increasing friction time. Microstructure of 5052 Al alloy was greatly deformed near the weld interface. The very fine and equaxied grain structure was observed at the near interface. The elongated grain was formed outside dynamic recrystallizatoin region at the peripheral part, while the A36 steel' side was not deformed. The hardness of the near interface was slightly softer than that of 5052 Al alloy base metal. The maximum softening width was about 8mm from the interface. In the present work, the friction welding condition, t$_1$=0.5sec, P$_2$=137.5MPa, showed a maximum joint strength (202MPa) when friction pressure, upset time and rotation speed were fixed at 75MPa, 5sec, 2000rev/min and these were the optimum friction welding condition of 5052Al/A36 steel joints.
High temperature flow behaviors of AISI 4340 steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests under the temperature range from 850 to $1100^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate from 0.01 to $10s^{-1}$. The flow stress decreased with increasing compression temperature and decreasing strain rate. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrheniustyped equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was used to simulate the hot deformation behavior of AISI 4340 steel. The modification of the Zener-Hollomon parameter and lnA parameter resulted in the improvement of the calculation accuracy of the proposed constitutive model compared with the experimental flow curves. In addition, the process map of AISI 4340 steel was proposed. The instable process condition for hot deformation was predicted and its reliability was verified with the experimental observation.
The out-of-pile mechanical performance and microstructure of recrystallized Zr-1.5 Nb-S alloy was investigated. The strength of the recrystallized Zr-1.5Nb-O-S alloys was observed to increase with the addition of sulfur over a wide temperature range, from room temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$. A yield drop and stress serrations due to dynamic strain were observed at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$. Wavy and curved dislocations and loosely knit tangles were observed after strained to 0.07 at room temperature, suggesting that cross slip is easier. At $300^{\circ}C$, however, dislocations were observed to be straight and aligned along the slip plane, suggesting that cross slip is rather difficult. At $300^{\circ}C$, oxygen atoms are likely to exert a drag force on moving dislocations, intensifying the dynamic strain aging effect. Oxygen atoms segregated at partial dislocations of a screw dislocation with the edge component may hinder the cross slip, resulting in the rather straight dislocations distributed on the major slip planes. Recrystallized Zr-Nb-S alloys exhibited ductile fracture surfaces, supporting the beneficial effect of sulfur in zirconium alloys. Oxidation resistance in air was also found to be improved with the addition of sulfur in Zr-1.5 Nb-O alloys.

High temperature flow behaviors of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C tool steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests on a Gleeble simulator. The compressive test temperature was varied from 850 to $1,150^{\circ}C$ with the strain rate ranges of 0.05 and $10s^{-1}$. The maximum height reduction was 45%. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrhenius-typed equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was proposed to simulate the hot deformation behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to compare with the constitutive model. It was concluded that the ANN model showed more accurate prediction compared with the constitutive model for describing the hot compressive behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel.

The microstructure evolution in hot forging process is composed of dynamic recrystallization during deformation as well as grain growth during dwell time. Therefore, the control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate. temperature and holding time is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. Modeling equations are developed to represent the flow curve. grain size. recrystallized volume fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. The developed modeling equations were combined with thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling to predict the microstructure change evolution during hot forging process. The large exhaust valve spindle (head diameter of 512mm) was simulated by closed die forging with hydraulic press and cooled in air after forging. The preform was heated to each 1080 and 1150$^{\circ}C$. Numerical calculation was performed by DEFORM-2D. a commercial finite element code. Heat transfer can be coupled with the deformation analysis in a non-isothermal deformation analysis. In order to obtain the fine and homogeneous microstructure and good mechanical properties in forging. the FEM would become a useful tool in the simulation of the microstructure development. In forging, appropriate temperature, strain and strain rate and rapid cooling are required to obtain the fine grain microstructure The optimal forging temperature and effective strain range of Nimonic 80A for large exhaust valve spindle are about 1080$\∼$l120$^{\circ}C$ and 150$\∼$200$\%$.

When extruding Al6061 alloys, deformation energy is deposited inside the extruded alloy depending on the deformation and the temperature of extrusion. This creates a Peripheral Coarse Grain (PCG) on the surface, where relatively more deformation energy. of the extruded alloy has been accumulated. Furthermore, since the deformation of materials continues while the materials recrystallize, it is important to examine the effect of deformation energy on dynamic recrystallization in the process of extruding Al alloys along with their microstructure. Prior studies explain the theory behind PCG growth though quantitative analysis on PCG growth of Al alloys during extrusion processes has not yet been addressed. This study aims to measure the generated PCG thickness which determines the correlation between extrusion outlet temperature and its effect on mechanical properties. Surface structure observations were performed using Optical Microscope (OM) and mechanical properties were evaluated through tensile strength and hardness measurement. Throughout this study, we endevoured to find the optimum condition of extrusion exit temperature of Al6061 and confirmed improved d reliability. This study describes the effect of the complex process variables such as exit temperature on the thickness of PCG layer for the Al6061 alloy using the 200 tons extrusion press. We therefore, discovered that the PCG layer thickness was 117 ㎛ at temperatures between 460 ℃ to 520 ℃.
In this study, we investigated the effects of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN6) alloy. As the extrusion ratio and temperature increase, dynamic recrystallization during extrusion is promoted, leading to the formation of a fully recrystallized microstructure with increased grain size. Additionally, the increases in extrusion ratio and temperature lead to texture strengthening, exhibiting a higher maximum texture intensity. The extruded materials contain three types of secondary phases, i.e., Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, with irregular or polygonal shapes. The quantity, size, distribution, and area fraction of the second-phase particles are nearly identical between the two materials. Despite its larger grain size, the tensile yield strength of the material extruded at 450 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 25 (450-25) is higher than that of the material extruded at 325 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 10 (325-10), which is mainly attributed to the stronger texture hardening effect of the former. The ultimate tensile strength is similar in the two materials, owing to the higher work hardening rate in the 325-10 extrudate. Despite differences in grain size and recrystallization fraction, numerous twins are formed throughout the specimen during tensile deformation in both materials; consequently, the two materials exhibit nearly the same tensile elongation.
Fine-grained peridotite xenoliths are rarely trapped in the basaltic rocks from the southeastern part of Jeju Island. Based on textural characteristics of the constituent phases showing uniform-sized, fine-grained tabular to mosaic grains with rare porphyroclastic relics, the studied samples can be defined as fine-grained, foliated porphyroclastic peridotites (FPP). Almost no significant difference among the FPPs in textures and major element compositions implies that the FPPs were derived from a structural domain, experiencing similar deformation events and deformation patterns. Moreover, the bimodal distribution with kink-banded porphyroclasts ($2{\sim}3mm$) and stain-free neoblasts ($200{\sim}300{\mu}m$), straight to gently curved grain boundaries with triple junctions, interstitial melt pockets, and microstructures for migrating grain boundary suggest that the studied samples went through dynamic recrystallization (${\pm}$ static recrystallization) in the presence of melt/fluid movement along foliation planes. No notable difference between the FPP and common protogranular xenoliths in major element compositions and geochemical evolution also implies that the FPP and protogranular xenoliths were from a similar horizon. Thus, the textural and geochemical characteristics of the FPPs reflects deformation events occurred at a localized and narrow zone within the lithospheric mantle beneath the Jeju Island. Although further detailed studies are necessary to define deformation events, the most possible process which could trigger deformation in the FPP in the rigid upper mantle was the ascending basaltic magma forming high-stress deformation zones. The suggested high-stress deformation zones in the lithosphere beneath the Jeju Island may be produced by paleo-faulting events related to the ascent of basalt magma before Jeju Island was formed.
