  • As Internet is being widely used as an infra of distributed applications, the most of today's softwares are changing into Internet-based distributed applications. The development methods using the middleware, like CORBA ORB, make the development of the web-based software easy. However, the performance verification method useful for an optimized software distribution is not provided at software development. Additionally, monitoring methods and metrics for dynamic load-balancing are not presented at run-time. This paper presents the method to monitor the message between objects, load metric, and metrics for load-balancing. To calculate a load of a node, we define events occurred between applications, time between the events, then extract the data related to a load. And we derive formula calculating the load from the extracted data. Then using the formula, we present the metrics for dynamic load-balancing. Moreover, we observe the utilization and efficiency of the monitoring algorithm, load metric, and load-balancing metrics.

  • A server load balancer is used to accept and distribute client requests to one of servers in a wireless internet proxy server cluster. LVS(Linux Virtual Server), a software based server load balancer, can support several load balancing algorithms where client requests are distributed to servers in a round robin way, in a hashing-based way or in a way to assign first to the server with the least number of its concurrent connections to LVS. An improved load balancing algorithm to consider server performance was proposed where they check upper and lower limits of concurrent connection numbers to be allowed within each maximum server performance in advance and apply the static limits to load balancing. However, they do not apply run-time server load information dynamically to load balancing. In this paper, we propose a dynamic load balancing scheme where the load balancer keeps each server CPU load information at run time and assigns a new client request first to the server with the lowest load. Using a cluster consisting of 16 PCs, we performed experiments with static content(image and HTML). Compared to the existing schemes, experimental results show performance improvement in the cases of client requests requiring CPU-intensive processing and a cluster consisting of servers with difference performance.

  • The growth of the World Wide Web and web-based applications is creating demand for high performance web servers to offer better throughput and shorter user-perceived latency. This demand leads to widely used cluster-based web servers in the Internet infrastructure. Load balancing algorithms play an important role in boosting the performance of cluster web servers. Previous load balancing algorithms suffer a significant performance drop under dynamic and database-driven workloads. We propose an estimation-based load balancing algorithm with admission control for cluster-based web servers. Because it is difficult to accurately determine the load of web servers, we propose an approximate policy. The algorithm classifies requests based on their service times and tracks the number of outstanding requests from each class in each web server node to dynamically estimate each web server load state. The available capacity of each web server is then computed and used for the load balancing and admission control decisions. The implementation results confirm that the proposed scheme improves both the mean response time and the throughput of clusters compared to rival load balancing algorithms and prevents clusters being overloaded even when request rates are beyond the cluster capacity.

  • With the advent of SDN, a next-generation network technology that separates the hardware and software areas of network equipment and defines the network using open source-based software, it solves the problems of complexity and scalability of the existing network system. It is now possible to configure a custom network according to the requirements. However, it has a structural disadvantage that a load on the network may occur due to a lot of control communication occurring between the controller and the switch, and many studies on network load distribution to effectively solve this have been preceded. In particular, in previous studies of load balancing techniques related to flow tables, many studies were conducted without consideration of flow entries, and as the number of flows increased, the packet processing speed decreased and the load was increased. To this end, we propose a new network load balancing technique that monitors flows in real time and applies dynamic flow management techniques to control the number of flows to an appropriate level while maintaining high packet processing speed.

  • This paper focuses on a hash-based, distributed Wet caching network that eliminates inter-cache communication. An agent program on cache servers, a mapping program on the DNS server, and other components comprised in a distributed Web caching network were modified and developed to implement a so-called "consistent" hashing. Also, a dynamic load balancing algorithm is proposed to address the load-balancing problem that is a key performance issue on distributed architectures. This algorithm effectively balances the load among cache servers by distributing the calculated amount of mapping items that have higher popularity than others. Therefore, this developed network can resolve the imbalanced load that is caused by a variable page popularity, a non-uniform distribution of a hash-based mapping, and a variation of cache servers.

  • In order to maintain load balancing in a distributed system, we should obtain workload information from all the nodes on network. This processing requires $O(v^2)$ communication overhead, where v is the number of nodes. In this paper, we present a new synchronous dynamic distributed load balancing algorithm on a (v, k + 1, 1)-configured network applying a symmetric balanced incomplete block design, where $v\;=\;k^2$\;+\;k\;+\;1$. Our algorithm needs only $O(\sqrt[v]{v})$ communication overhead and each node receives workload information from all the nodes without redundancy. Therefore, load balancing is maintained since every link has the same amount of traffic for transferring workload information.

  • In a sender-initiated load balancing algorithm, a sender (overloaded processor) continues to send unnecessary request messages for load transfer until a receiver (underloaded processor) is found while the system load is heavy. Therefore, it yields many problems such as low cpu utilization and system throughput because of inefficient inter-processor communications until the sender receives an accept message from the receiver in this environment. This paper presents an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) for dynamic load balancing in heterogeneous distributed systems. In this scheme the processors to which the requests are sent off are determined by the proposed GA to decrease unnecessary request messages.

  • ad-hoc 망에서 라우팅 프로토콜의 부하균등(load balancing)은 이동성과 전송 지연사이의 trade-off로 인하여 성능 관점에서 중요한 이슈가 되어왔다. 부하균등을 고려한 SLAP(Simple Load-balancing Ad-hoc routing Protocol)이 제안되었으나 혼잡이 발생하거나 망의 토폴로지가 변화하였을 때 유연하게 대처하지 못한다.

  • In a P2P (Peer-to-Peer) VoD (video-on-Demand) streaming system, the nodes' load is an important factor which affects the system performance. In the system, some nodes may receive too many requests, which leads to overload. On the other hand, some other nodes may receive too few requests, which leads to low utilization. Therefore, designing a reasonable load balancing strategy is important. However, existing related studies cannot handle this problem effectively, because they don't have an efficient dynamic load information management mechanism, and they don't distinguish the difference of requests when transfer the nodes' load. In this paper, to manage the dynamic load information efficiently, we design a load management table for each node. Based on the load information, we propose a load balancing strategy which uses a request migration algorithm (LBRM). Through simulations, our scheme can handle the load imbalance problem effectively and improve the users' playback fluency.

  • This paper propose an dynamic load balancing algorithm for heterogeneous distributed systems. The algorithm allows this tasks to be relocated. The key of the algorithm is to transfer a suitable amount of processing demand from senders to receivers. This amount is determined dynamically during sender-receiver negotiations. Factors considered when this amount is determined include processing speeds of different nodes, the current load state of both sender and receiver, and the processing demands of tasks eligible for relocation. This paper also propose a load state measurement scheme which is designed particularly for heterogeneous systems. This results of the study show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms and is stable over a range of system attributes.
